More new crew commits...

Any Quarterbacks?

not that I can see but we have a few who can challenge Zach for 2015-16 Blake and AJ are returning as far as I know plus there are others who can play that position pretty well, Baylor Mullens has some good quality QB experience (Showed it in the Linfield game on the Punt fakes) although he is a beast at linebacker...plus Bo Wimberly had state level QB experience and is a sophomore in 2015

Some other news on incoming freshmen...oooooo  incoming QB possibly?

QB/OLB Trace Carter out of Waskom HS, Waskom TX http://www.hudl.com/team/34700/highlights/69775817 led them to 16-1 season in 2014

Belton's own Samuel Hussey 6' 3" 295 Center  http://www.hudl.com/athlete/776198/samuel-hussey http://www.hudl.com/team/16594/highlights/77839841

Now while it's all well and good to know that these young men want to be there, everything can change in a heartbeat there is nothing set in concrete, but it's kind of cool to see their hopes and aspirations to the school and see a young freshman possibly begin his college career. Still waiting for Bo Wimberly on the recieving front, he was in but never got the call.

I know when I played DII soccer and then coached HS ball after, one of the things I loved was watching the career of some of my young players post HS and see how and where they go.

43rd President George W. Bush was on UMHB campus Wednesday to give a speech on leadership.  At the end, he fielded a few questions.  One of them came from Deshon Kinsey (Sr. LB with the Cru).  He introduced himself, but before he could ask his question Bush remarked, "Man you guys are good at football".   ;)

One of the Cru assistant coaches (David Branscom) has left the team to take the DC position at a San Antonio high school.  He was with the program since the very beginning (first as a player, later as a coach).  It's a tough loss, but I wish him and his family the best.

It's always surprising to me to see a long-time coach leave D3 for a high school gig, especially an assistant position.

Then again, TX HS coaches can make darned good money compared to D3 coaches, and you never know the personal dynamics involved.

It was a surprise back in the 1950s when Jewell Wallace, football HC at the University of Houston, left to take the HC job at Jefferson HS in San Antonio.

Warren, was UofH in a conference back in the 1950's?  Which one?

Jefferson was a real power in the 1950's.

Jefferson was a real power in the 1950's.

First of all, I was wrong: Wallace decamped to Jefferson for the 1948 season. Secondly, full disclosure, I had to look up Houston's conference affiliations: 1946-48, Lone Star Conference; 1949, Gulf Coast Conference; 1950, Independent; 1951-59, Missouri Valley Conference.

Jefferson had a goodly number of excellent seasons under Wallace. He wasn't a screaming, foaming-at-the-mouth coach. He saw himself as more of a teacher. I recall watching a pre-season scrimmage v. TMI on Jefferson' s parade ground. TMI,of course, was barely able to make the Mustangs break a sweat, and some Jefferson fans began trash-talking to them. Wallace blew his whistle, walked over to the offenders,  read them the proverbial riot act, and pointed  our that  both teams were there to learn -- and if they didn't like that they could leave. In one season they were eliminated fairly early in district play, so Wallace declared to the local newspapers that Jefferson would finish out the season having " fun."  And they did, using all sorts of unusual formations and trick plays.

Prior to 1948, under Barlow "Bones" Irwin , Jefferson had some notable successes; they played for the Class AA state championship in 1947 1946 v. Odessa. They lost. Odessa ran the T-formation (Jefferson was unfamiliar with it) and featured a guy named Hayden Fry.
