For WashU to beat Wheaton they are going to have to be able to run on them. Will they be able to?

WashU got 148 yds rushing on 38 attempts vs. NCC when Wheaton got -2 yards rushing on 21 attempts vs. NCC.

In conference play the only team that has rushed for more yards or average more per carry then WashU is NCC.

They better enjoy it while they can. In the CCIW this year they're probably 5th, maybe 6th.

WashU running the ball is their main strength and their identity as a team. WashU is also dead last in the league in passing offense. RB Fred Ware and co have been very consistent running the ball on everyone. WashU hasn't been very successful balancing their offense with the pass and their defense, though it's ranked 3rd in the conference, gave up 412 yds to IWU, 343 to Carthage, and 361 to Carroll. If they want to beat Wheaton, they will have to control the LOS and run the ball to limit Forcucci and Co. from doing their thing. A high scoring affair favors Wheaton IMO.

Sneaky good national / playoff implication game between these two. WIAC, ARC, etc. matchups this week are big, this is an easy one to overlook. I'll be tuning in to at least some of the matchup.

WashU @Wheaton is a defacto D3 play-in game.

After Saturday Wheaton's remaining schedule is:
@1-5 Elmhurst
vs 2-4 Millikin
@2-4 North Park

WashU has:
@Millikin
vs North Park
@Augustana

Yeah, their only (probable) loss in the regular season is a decisive loss to a Calvin team who is in their second year as a program and will certainly be in the bottom half of the MIAA.

Prior to the NCC/Augie game today I (foolishly) thought the Vikings might be able to stay within 35-40 points of the Cardinals as Wheaton did. Then, the Cards went out and proved just how misguided that thought was as they obliterated the Rock Islanders 76-14 in true monkey stomping fashion. Other than a safety, the Cards scored in every conceivable way. In addition to rushing and passing TDs and field goals, they had 3 defensive touchdowns including a blocked punt for a TD, a fumble recovery for a TD, and a pick-six.

** And speaking of field goals——————-NCC's Aidan Ellison hit on a very impressive 48 yarder in the first quarter. Then, on the last play of the first half, he outdid himself as he booted one through the uprights from 57 yards out! Talk about a valuable weapon. I doubt you'll see many 57 yard field goals in the D3 ranks.

Carroll had a fumble recovery for a TD, pick 6 and blocked a punt for a safety.
Of course just when I think I can mention the additional ways Carroll scored,
there goes NCC doing even more... ;D

Logan's predictions.

He has IWU (4-3) predicted to win over Augie (5-2) by 5.1 points.

Carroll's TE #45 Reed Breckheimer put up a stat yesterday, I have to believe is rare for TE's.

Carroll likes to run him out of the wildcat. They may call this formation something else but they snap the ball directly to him.

Yesterday he ran 12 times for 130 yards and 3 TD's.

I don't know if other teams have leveraged a TE this way but I have to believe a TE rushing for 130 yards is rare.

They were 1 yard away from a 4th defense/special teams TD, Marey Roby got tripped up after a great return. Video below

Every player's fondest dream is to set foot on the field when Elmhurst is on the opposite sideline. That's the day when a CCIW football program's record book suddenly becomes one great big open file on the SID's computer.

If this seems like a harsh thing for me to say, keep in mind that I want all of my alma mater's CCIW rivals to replace each of their "vs. North Park" record book entries with some other school's name ... and "vs. Elmhurst" will serve that purpose just as well as anything else.

I didn't get a chance to watch the WashU @ Wheaton game.

Looking at the replay looks like WashU had a drive late in the 4rth deep into Wheaton territory but a pick sealed the win for Wheaton.
