Hope everybody is digesting the great food and great times this special day.  God's blessings to all.

Awhile back there was the topic of name changes from Wheaton Crusaders to Wheaton Thunder.  When I started at Elmhurst (1998) Wheaton was still the Crusaders, so it was some time between 1998-2002.

You will find THIS interesting. Elmhurst College has NOT always been known as the Bluejays.  Originally their Mascot was  GOLDENROD!  (EEK!  )  Thank goodness somebody changed it to Bluejays!  I couldn't imagine calling on the air  "Looking into the endzone for Young, Touchdown GOLDENRODS!"  Oh gosh, that would not fly.  (no pun intended)

Thunder is a good nickname. The name implies power, grace, and is found in nature in almost all parts of the world, so it is not offensive to anyone.

For what it's worth (which in this case probably isn't even two cents), I like your "Thunder" mascot.  It's unique and denotes great power.  Well chosen.

No, it's not unique. MIAA member Tri-State University's teams are also called the Thunder.

It has only recently become a hated rivalry because of the success of both schools. thats my impression.

Do you really feel it has become a "hated rivalry"?

Perhaps usee meant "heated rivalry" rather than "hated rivalry".

What horrified me more that anything were the final 10 options on a replacement mascot.  There was a period of time where alum and students could submit and nominate some options.  On the final list of 10 there were some absolutely horrible options, that if selected might have caused me to break all affiliation with the school.     I don't remember them all, but the one that stuck out the most was the Cherubs!  AHHHHHHHHH!

Can you imagine?  "And now taking the field, welcome your Wheaton College Singing Cherubs"  Followed by 10 minutes of rolling laughter...

Mugsy, you cannot imagine how badly those of us Parkers who were following the Wheaton nickname saga wanted to see our archrivals become the Cherubs! It would've been the equivalent of having Wheaton College unilaterally declare that all of its men's athletic teams would henceforth wear tutus and ballet slippers as part of their uniforms. In terms of student-section banter for NPU's Carlson Crazies, it would've been like shooting fish in a barrel.

Then again, having to endure such a horrific nickname might've spurred on Wheaton's athletic teams to greater success out of sheer anger, a la the Johnny Cash song, "A Boy Named Sue".

Another interesting point on the Bell series:

In the JR Bishop/Mike Swider era of 25 seasons (1982-2006), Wheaton has had the bell 21 of those 24 years. Of the 4 losses to NCC ('82, '87, '97, '05) the first 3 of those were during the only years in that stretch Wheaton had a losing record. In other words, 2005 was the first time in 25 years NCC has a victory in the bell game when wheaton had a winning record. (for you history enthusiasts 7 of the 14 bell victories by ncc were over wheaton teams w winning records).

So that's another reason this rivlary is "heating" up. Wheaton had always won when they were good. These teams are playing this game when it means something for both.  That makes a possible rematch next weekend in Wheaton all the more intense even if its improbable.

Easiest route is to take:
77 South to Canton, OH
62 East to Alliance, OH
Take the State St. Exit off of 62 and head East for a few miles.  College will be on your Left.  (Corner of State St. and Union Ave.)

Another route is:
14 South/East to Edinburg, OH
183 South to Alliance, OH  College will be on your right.  (Corner of State St. and Union Ave.)

Right about now the Thunder are on a bus to Alliance.  I was told they would be boarding the bus for their 8 hour trip at 8 o'clock this morning.  I hope we can be talking about 2 CCIW wins over the OAC by Sunday.

Just because 1 team of a rivalry hasn't been winning and/or hasn't fared too well of late, doesn't minimize the rivalry.  For example, the Old Oaken Bucket. (Purdue/Indiana)  IU has not had a good football team in a LONG time, but the Bucket is still cherished, along with a mutual dislike for their opponent on both sides.  I think the Little Brass Bell is a great rivalry trophy between the always good Wheaton and the recently good NC.
