ok trivia experts - a season pass to all SLIAC basketball games to the person who can identify the nearest D3 school to UNLV - so panther can get a D3 fix if he gets a job at UNLV.

I'm pretty sure that would have to be whichever SCIAC school is farthest northeast.

At least the conference initials would feel familiar! ;)

And the winner is (unless a protest is lodged), Furbug.  Furbug, SLIAC Commish will get that Season Pass printed up for November, but in case it's not laminated by then, get a hold of me and I'll let you know which entrance is "easy" to get in for each of the gyms!!!
As for Panther, there you have it, your closest D3 game should you land in Vegas.  Of course, should you end up n Vegas, I would hope that you would make contacts after awhile that might develop into a source for a line on D3 games - perhaps i could drop a light wager on Hope- Calvin, Webster -Fontbonne or Williams - Amherst!!!
The only thing not to be liked in Florida is no D3 hoops!!!

FC - what Classic chumped out on Fontbonne?  Read in the CCIW room that Beloit had dropped out of a game with IWU  -  and were replaced with Webster!

Also, I believe that the SLU exhibition would count against Fontbonne's 25 game number, meaning Fontbonne would have only one remaining open game, not two.

Going to Cal to play Caltech   -  hmmmm they haven't beaten a non conference D3 team in a long time......... - Worldwide SLIAC reputation will be on the line...

Thanks, hopefan. This is exciting. I hope there will not be any protests lodged.  :P

I guess you are aware that the Webster softball team is to play Wash. U. in Decorah, IA at 2:00 today in the first round of the NCAA. Both teams go almost to the Minnesota border to play each other again. Webster won earlier in the season 4-3.

The Webster baseball team plays Maryville tonight in Alton.

There are D-III tournaments in Las Vegas the third week of December or so every year. Usually four separate fields of four competing under the banner "D-III Desert Shootout."

I know they tried to get this changed so that it would only count as one of the two pre-season games allowed for d3, but I'm not sure if that's in effect this year or not.  Pat?

Caltech beat Bard last year.  It's the conference games they haven't won in a while (or ever, actually).

Thanks Hoopfan - I messed that comment up - seems to me that Oxybob was saying Caltech would have a good group returning, though that may only be relative to years past.
Will be interested to hear Pat's reply on that D1 exhibition rule - I hadn't heard that it had changed....

And Pat thanks for the reminder regarding the D3 tourneys out in Vegas - forgot all about them -  maybe Panther would host us...  Dang, I have to admit that would be a great weekend of two of my favorite things - D3hoops and the tables- wouldn't need a room....

From what I know at this time. FU's two exhibition games will be Oakland City and SLU. The Cal trip will be used the same as this years Tampa trip. Seven days of practices and one game. It seemed to work well last year. We have ten players going on the trip to Europe this August.

If you haven't voted in the latest poll on the homepage regarding the distance for the 3 point line, you might want to chime in. I don't want to prejudice anyone -- and probably most people will choose another option just to spite me -- but I favor the international distance. In fact, I favor all levels of basketball in the U.S. switching completely to international rules including the trapezoidal lane, 3-point line, and everything else. This discussion occurred somewhere elso on d3hoops a year or two ago and it was pointed out to me that it is impractical to make such a change because of the financial burden on schools of repainting their courts. But if it is going to be mandatory to move the 3-point line, why not just go ahead and get it all done at once. Someday, hopefully in my lifetime, we will switch to international rules, so lets do it sooner rather than later.

To read a column from the Chicago Tribune regarding the subject of moving the 3-point line and switching to international rules, go to this link:

I'm glad I'm not alone in my opinion on this matter.

No, I agree.  I'm all for the international rules.  I played in a charity tournament a couple years back using international rules.  It was a blast.  The game moves so much quicker and (once people understand the rules) there's less complaining because there's less things to be called.

Wouldn't you think the NBA would be more exciting if NBA players could scoop the ball off the rim without having to wait for it to clear the cylinder?

Actually, the best part of the international rules that I enjoyed was not having to give the ball to the official to put it back in play.  (I think this only applied in the back-court), but it was great.

Thanks Hoops Fan. Glad someone else out there understands the benefits of international rules. In some respects the inbounding rule you mention is similar to the way soccer is played -- which, by the way, I believe we play according to international rules at all levels. (Of course we didn't invent the sport, so we don't feel like we have the copyright on it.) But if I'm wrong about that, please correct me

Yeah; it's heavily influenced by "real" football.  It just makes the game go quicker.  Although the NBA has so many commercial stoppages, I guess it doesn't matter.  That's one think the Euros have over us.  They actually care enough about the sport to not artificially interrupt it just because it's on television.
