I wonder how some people (i.e. miacwatchmen) can be so ignorant when it comes to D-3 basketball and call themselves a fan.  You have to living under a rock to think only the WIAC redshirts (when it's clear the entire D-3 contigent probalby falls under the same rules  ;)).  Did you hear next year the WIAC will only be allowed to play four players against everyone else's five?  It's an effort to level the playing field because the conference happens to "drain" out-of-state athletes.  Perhaps athletes will think twice before coming to Wisconsin to win a national title!

Interestingly there is a movement a foot to rescind the redshirt ban and surprisingly the call isn't coming from just the larger public institutions.  But that doesn't mean it will ever happen.  The majority of D3 schools are smaller, private schools so as long as we stay in D3 we're going to have to play by their rules.   I don't see that changing myself.

Rescripostiy really helps recruiting but another advantage we tend to have over other schools is facilities.  Ours tend to be better.

Wow, Stout is playing again?  That's 3 games in 4 days, and they look like they're playing well.

Also helps that Macalester is, at best, an average club. No legit point guard, suspect wing play. Those two things, Im sure, are what Stout is exploiting with their up tempo, high pressure game. The Blue Devils have put together a very nice run here to start off the season.

Stout wins by about 10.  Mac cut the lead to 4 with a few minutes left.

... hmm... maybe Stout's 3 games in 4 days started to catch up with them...

Did one of the WIAC schools hire a Russian assistant coach, BW? Or were you just tipping back a few too many shots of Stolichnaya tonight?  :D

Besides playing 3 games in 4 days, the BlueDevils bus had no heat all the way to Wooster, and then broke down for 3 hours on the way back.

The states of Wisconsin and Minnesota have reciprocity agreements regarding their state schools (if you're a resident of one of them you can pay tuition at in-state rates to attend a state school across the border)
GS, actually the reciprocity tuition rate varies greatly from school to school.  When the agreement was originally reached it was for in-state tuition as you stated, but over time it has changed.  Because there were a larger number of MN residents than WI residents crossing the border, the State of Wisconsin re-wrote the rules.

MN residents now play a "MN Resident" tuition at WI schools which is significantly higher than in-state tuition, but nowhere near as much as out-of-state tuition.  It varies from UW school to UW school based on how many MN residents that school typically attracts.  Additionally, due to declining enrollment years ago, UW-Superior eliminated all out-of-state tuition.  Everyone that attends UWS pays the same in-state rate.

MN also established a "WI Resident" tuition.  Strangely enough at some MN schools (Winona St for example), a WI resident actually pays LESS than a MN resident.

miacwatchmen--glad to hear the Falcons looked good at SJU. I see their 3 percentage was not impresssive, however, the same problem they had vs. Concordia-St. Paul. I think they will be hard pressed to go .500 in the WIAC. If they do, they'll be above their predicted league finish: next to last. Ryan Zylstra did put on 25 lbs. since last year and is much improved. I think he had 8 rbds. vs. the Badgers in the exhibition game, going against Brian Butch, 6'11 and Stiemsma, 6'10.

By the way, Melzer did not get recruited out of Minnessota-- he played for RFHS his last two years.

Yes, but even with the "MN Resident" tuition, its still less expensive for prospective Minnesota student athletes to cross the boarder to Wisconsin and attend a WIAC school, as opposed to staying home and attending one of the MIAC schools.

I never intended to discuss public school vs. private school economics.  I was simply talking about how reciprocity works.

Let's not annoy the whole WIAC board by starting that conversation again!  >:( ;D

Just Bill,

Thanks for your explanation.  I knew that Wis. and Min. had an agreement, but you explained it pretty well.  Much appreciated.

Fred Falcon,

I knew that Melzer went to a Wis. high school and was recruited out of Wisconsin, but my point was that he was from Minnesota!  ;)  ;D
