Well, we have the WIAC part of the answer - Bennett turned down CUW's offer and has retired (at least for now) and Semling is "interim" head coach. Now we can carry on the CUW coaching part of the question on the LMC board.

Well, should he decide not to remain in the D3 arena, the loss of coach Bennett will be a loss for all of D3Hoops.  In addition to being a top-notch recruiter and excellent game-day coach, he also is a down to earth guy with a lot of class.  Best of luck to coach Semling.

stoutguy

Well, I don't want to be a cocky media guy, buttttttttt, didn't I suggest this Bennett thing (Leaving late so Semling would  HAVE the job) a long time ago?  Just checking to see if anyone remembered?

So, I guess the "Way to go out on a limb"  comment (with 5 stars) means that everyone else knew all along that he was going to retire?

The Roop

Well he did say, immediately after winning the championship, that he was thinking about retiring. I forget his exact quote but is was along the lines of "When an old wrestler hangs it up he puts his shoes on the mat. Right now I have one shoe on the mat."

Yep, that was in the postgame news conference after the final.

Stoutguy, if you'll notice, the new forum system does not rate on a "star" system like the last...  It rates by karma... you either applaud (+1) or smite (-1).  Pat Coleman simply gets those 5 bright stars because he's Pat Coleman, and without him, there'd be no D3hoops.com

I wish the best of luck to Coach Bennett and his family, as well as Coach Semling and the rest of the Pointer team.  I really think that this Point team is going to surprize people by how good they really are (if the two-time defending National Champs can EVER really surprize anyone...)  Most people wrote them off long ago simply because of the core group of seniors that graduated, and the great majority of the rest will write them off now because Coach Bennett is no longer at the helm, but this team is still just that... a TEAM... and the players on this team have contributed to and celebrated two straight National Titles.  Will somebody else have to step up and score?  You'd better believe it.  The top 3 scorers all graduated.  But I think we got a hint at the future last year when Tamaris Relerford went down in the Lawrence game.  The well at UWSP has not run dry and there are players who are MORE than capable to step in, step up, and fill the shoes left by the graduating class.  After Relerford went down with the broken hand, I heard Coach Bennett remark "Someone's misfortune is someone else's opportunity."  And Steve Hicklin stepped up and went above and beyond expectations.  Well, the only "misfortune" is 4 open starting spots and an open slot for the 6th man.  I think that there are players to step in to those rolls and help UWSP stay competitive on the conference AND the national stage in the near future.

I'm right there with ya PointSpecial. They're still the Champs until somebody beats them as far as I'm concerned. Can they 3-peat? I don't know but I think they are more likely to 3-peat than they are to be conference cellar dwellers as some have predicted. Too much talent there for that to happen.

I do remember very well the "One shoe on the Mat." quote.  My comment was more in reference to the "retire late to assure my guy gets the job" trick.  And don't get me wrong.  I have the utmost respect for Jack and we will all miss him in this conference.

Greek Tragedy

Tough to hear about the news, but I guess I wasn't totally surprised.  Articles from the Stevens Point Journal are below.

Well, at least in the old system I was cool and was able to do all the fancy links and stuff like that!  Now I gotta figure out how to do all that again...  no clue what the difference between a hyperlink and a FTP link is though...HELP! lol.
