Quote from: ChickenHoops on February 06, 2026, 07:13:36 AMIf I was Matt Lewis I would start being very vocal. He's too nice of a guy to make a foolish scene like Jeff Gard does. If Dernbach acts like Gard I will dress him down too. When Miller (forgot his first name) left Whitewater I thought all the jerks were gone, guess not. Win at all costs isn't acceptable here. NPI doesn't measure that, unfortunately. Eye test pretty bad from this vantage point.

Did you think UW-Whitewater coach Pat Miller's antics on the sideline were acceptable?  I'm amazed the institution didn't censure him. FYI, for those of us outside Whitewater, he will be remembered for his behavior more that winning titles. I was a teenager going to Point games when he was coaching and I was amazed he could get away with his antics.

This was about berating referees. Nothing else.

Chicken Hoops, if you think Dernbach is less "exhuberant" than Coach Gard, or any other WIAC coach, then you aren't watching very closely.  Every coach in this league berate and beg the refs for calls.  D3 refereeing is so poor they almost have to.
I remember in last years Point vs Platteville game Dernbach went on the floor to CONGRATULATE one of his players who had just hard fouled a Platteville player who lay on the court injured.  To me, that is WAY more egregious than harassing the refs like all coaches do at every level.

Point had a 2nd half for the ages last night at the new Zorn. Despite shooting 3-16 from 3 and 41% overall in the 1st half, Point still held a 32-30 HT lead. That all changed after the interval. Point's first possession resulted in 2 missed FTs by Grant Manz. But, they got an offensive rebound and hit a 3. That started a string of seven straight possessions that resulted in scores. They also hit their first SEVEN 3-pointers, finishing the half 7 of 9 behind the arc and shooting almost 70% in the 2nd half. Butler was unstoppable and unconscious at times, finishing with 28. Combs was outstanding with 12 pts, 13 boards and 4 dimes. Miron and 12 and 5, while Baumgartner chipped in with 9 and 4 despite only playing 17 minutes because of foul trouble. Freshman Max Raimer continues his improved and expanded play, scoring 10 in 27 minutes before fouling out. If there's a silver lining to Krohn being out for the year with an ACL injury, it's the expanded roll of Grant Manz. He had 4 points and 3 rebounds. He also contributed 2 assists and 2 blocks and a steal, along with a lot of hustle plays and defense that don't show up on the box score.

WARHAWKS: 78
Stout: 77      OT

With the exception of the opening point, a Richie Warren free throw, the Blue Devils led for the first 19 minutes of the game.  The lead stayed in the 1-3 possession range reaching a high of 9 before the WARHAWKS managed to tie and take a lead 41-40 with under a minute remaining.  After another tie Rashad Rogers sank one of two free throws giving the WARHAWKS a 42-41 lead at the half. The second half started all WARHAWKS as they sank 8 of their first 9 shots while holding Stout to 4 points and after 6 1/2 minutes the lead had swollen to sixteen, 61-45. The Blue Devils finally got untracked while the WARHAWKS cooled down. Point by point the lead began to shrink.  At 2 1/2 minutes the Blue Devils pulled into a tie and then took a lead they would hold until Brock Marino's prayer banked off the backboard and through the basket as the horn sounded. Issac Verges's 18 points led the WARHAWKS while both Luke Barra and Marino added 11 and Warren finished with 10.  Warren and Verges had 8 and 7 rebounds respectively. Warren added 4 assists.

Because I know some of you are AJ Uttech fans I'll add that he had a pretty good game finishing with 18 points. He was a big part of their comeback. Almost pulled it off.

The UWL team I expected to see when WIAC play began finally showed up in a 92 to 67 thrashing of a good Platteville team. They played with enthusiasm from the opening tip in a manner that has been lacking, especially in their inexplicable 1 and 4 conference start. Our 3 star players excelled and got solid support from their teammates. Can they run the table ? If they play like last night, they can. Will they ?

Kirbmania

That was the UWL team I thought would run away with the WIAC this year.  Not sure what happened after their excellent nonconference play but they seem to have regained their confidence.  I think they will still emerge as the conference champs although Point has been playing very well and should give them a run.  I wish I could agree with your statement that they beat a good Platteville team, but they have been very poor on the road this year, especially lately. They've been good at home but can't keep a game close on the road now.  UWW and UWO find ways to win so should be an exciting finish to the season.

Unfortunately, he may also be remembered for missing the 2nd FT that would've put them up by 3, so at worst, the game would've gone into OT. Uttech seems to be doing well at Stout. Not sure what happened at Point. He doesn't seem to have point guard numbers, so maybe Point had enough shooters? Maybe he didn't fit into the team's plan? A missed opportunity? One man's trash is another man's treasure. Good for him.

La Crosse definitely started out slow, if you want to call it that. They lost 4 in a row and started out 1-4 in conference, but 3 of those losses were on the road, an OT loss at Oshkosh and two 3-pt games. It looks like they found their groove and finish with 4 out of 5 at home. Pretty sure they'll be fine.

WIACer

The Wiac reffing has become an embarrassment. Watching games online shows just how poor they are. Osh game. 15+ fouls EC. Osh 7. Stopped watching because of refs.  I don't care who wins but hate to see a team wonder wtf.  Watch ww, uwp hardly a foul ww playing hard. Uwrf-uwsp looks like let's let them play. We don't have very many refs but the ones in the league are obviously not working to improve. It will eventually hurt us in tournament.

Point deserved to lose tonight.  When you decide not to show up until about 2 minutes left in the first half, you deserve to lose.  When you get beat to loose balls repeatedly all game long, you deserve to lose.  They have everything to play for and you can't lose to the last place team in the league.

Point lost the conference title tonight because they aren't going 3-0 against Whitewater, La Crosse and Oshkosh.  I think all 3 of those teams are playing better than Point is right now.

Side note, why in the heck is Isaiah Moore never leaving the bench?  He can give you solid minutes and some length on the wing.  That makes zero sense to me.

Greek Tragedy

Point lays an egg tonight. Down as many as 13 in the 1st half, they cut to 5 at the break, thanks to a near half court shot at the buzzer. Got the miss they needed at the end but as Point was trying to call a timeout, he steps on the line. River Falls converts on the inbounds pass for the win. Real disappointing with a tough stretch to end it.

I do disagree with Tomt4525. Outside of tonight, playing the best ball all year. Beat PL, who beat you, topped Stout after they blew you out and won at Eau Claire after you only beat them by 2 at home. All 3 wins by double digits.

La Crosse playing as well as anyone, but Whitewater needs a buzzer beater to top Stout and Oshkosh had lost 3 in a row (two by one point) prior to their wins over River Falls and Eau Claire.

But, as you said, Point should've and needed to win tonight.
