^^^ Do the official scorers, who register points in the official score book, also operate the scoreboard in the gym? Whether yes, or no, I'm assuming the basket in question was not recorded either place. I'm also assuming that archived game video has been reviewed and the unrecorded basket has been verified. Not questioning what you are saying. It's a real shame something like that happens. Hard to know how the game would have played out if it had been recorded correctly. Could have affected decisions to call timeouts, whether/when to start fouling, etc., etc.

Want to give a shout out to the ODAC staff. They must have been really busy the past couple of days with basketball added to the mix of things they have to pay attention to, plus championships in field hockey and men's & women's soccer -- and maybe some things I'm not aware of.

To make sure I was accurate and not relying on hearsay, I watched the replay. It's not hard to find the problem. I was slightly inaccurate in my post.  It was not a missed H-S basket; it was a phantom UWL 2 points.  The half time score was 34-26 in favor of the Tigers.  UWL makes a nice run to start the half.  They clearly score 11 points; it's not hard to follow. The Tigers call timeout with the score 38-37.  There is obvious confusion at the scorer's table as the scoreboard goes through some changes.  They finally settle on 39-38 in favor of UWL.  The appeals of H-SC scorer, then assistants and then head coach are apparently ignored.

My understanding is that the Tigers received apologies from the officials involved, but that is the extent of it. The beginning of the season can be rough at the table; I know the Tigers usually have issues with the shot clock.  Yeah, a shame - the Tigers outscored the Eagles in regulation on the floor, but don't get the W.  More wins down the road will fix it.

^^^ Wow. That just seems weird. I can see where failure to record a made basket might happen, but adding a basket that didn't happen??? If it's in the play-by-play then it's pretty simple to just add up the points for each made hoop (2 pt or 3 pt) and free throws. So they must have decided that UWL made a basket that didn't get properly recorded in the p-b-p. Then they could go back and reconstruct, from video review, what happened. I don't get it.

You made me want to look at the play by play.  The box score p-b-p shows the specific problem; it also makes no sense on its face.  P-b-p accurately shows Paider of UWL scored a contested layup at 16:44 to trail by 1, 38-37. Hampden-Sydney inbounds, gets it across half court and calls timeout at 16:30 (time ran off the clock while H-S retrieved ball that went well off the court after made basket).  At the very same 16:30 on the p-b-p, Paider is inaccurately given 2 more points for a layup.  That simply did not happen on the video, nor should it have happened on paper; UWL is given a basket when H-S had possession.  They lead by 1 now. Their next score will happen at 15:33. Why the problem was not cleared up after multiple visits to the scorer's table by Tiger coaches is a mystery.

I don't know for sure, but I've sat at my share of tables for basketball games.  The official book is the official book.  It's very hard for a team to successfully argue a mistake if they don't have someone at the table keeping a scorebook.  Refs don't usually look at assistants or managers doing it on the bench with the same level of reliability.  I didn't see anybody from HSC at the table (maybe I missed it).

I've seen, multiple times, where errors remain errors because there's no one else for the official scorer to confer with.  Officials don't have to take alternative scorebooks into account, but they often will if they're available.  I'd tell every coach/team - sit somebody at the table with scorebook on the road.  It doesn't matter very often, but when it does matter, it's really important.

Matt Snyder of the D3datacast did a pretty thorough review of the scoring discrepancy in the UWL vs H-SC game, since it was their game of the week and had an 0.5 point spread in favor of UWL. His analysis begins at about the 48 minute mark: https://youtu.be/WT1HAO1lh50?si=2N9fZ6rxB_L5xtls

After the reference on D3 Datacast, I think I'll change my name to "Actually Correct Poster".

Thanks for bringing it up, I wasn't watching that part of the game, but Ryan Scott alerted me to your post here!

RMC with a tough week this week- Tomorrow at always tough CNU in the Freeman Center and Saturday night back in the friendly confines of Crenshaw Gym vs Yeshiva! Then we get two weeks off before we have HSC and Roanoke back to back in Crenshaw on Dec 3 and 6th! Thats a GAUNTLET to run early! By the end of that week we'll see if we deserve to be ranked at all! Josh likes to play a tough schedule early and this is no exception. I guess he likes to know what he has to work on BEFORE the Christmas break but we have TWO tournaments over that break-one before Christmas in Nashville and one after in Ashland! By the time we get into the meat of the ODAC schedule in January our guys should be BATTLE TESTED! On a side note- the 1984 DII team will be recognized this weekend at the HSC Football game so I have A LOT of frat brothers who played basketball that will be there this weekend- one- Gregg Marshall( Frat name "OPIE")had considerable success coaching at the D1 level with a number of different schools, the last being Wichita ST. He, former All American Jesse Hellyer, Drew Catlett ,and others will be by my tailgate on Saturday at the football game before the Yeshiva game, which is an 8pm start to accommodate Yeshiva's Religious beliefs. Should be a FUN WEEKEND! Haven't seen "Opie" in person to talk to him in YEARS!

Renovated Kirby Field House is going to be nice.  In addition to the new floor, stands, etc., the big computer screen scoreboards are in place with a new sound system.  AD Chad Eisele pointed out that there is additional lighting used during games that is designed to enhance the video streaming production along with a 5 camera system.  It opens up with a dedication of Tony Shaver Court on 11/22.

Pretty good game tonight down at CNU. RMC wins 71-65. Both teams turned the ball over a bit more than they would like -- 14 TOs for each. Some of those were forced, but enough were unforced -- especially for RMC -- that it had to be frustrating for the coaching staff. The Jackets were pretty foul prone and sent the Captains to the line 34 times, though they only made 21. RMC shot better from the field and made five more three pointers, exactly offsetting CNU's 15 point advantage at the free throw line (RMC was six of nine). That meant the game came down to the Jackets making three more two pointers. Both defenses played tight and tough.

H-SC rolled over Salisbury 79-56.  ODAC folks will probably recognize the name of the Sea Gulls leading scorer: Jamison Graves.  He transferred from Averett where he was a 3rd team All ODAC selection.  In their first game against Stockton of the NJAC, he scored 26.  Stockton didn't have a Tugg Bizelle, however.  Last night with Tugg as his primary defender, Graves was 2-15 for 5 points.  On the other end, Tugg showed he has some offensive game too, as he led the Tigers with 19 points including 5-8 from beyond the arc.  The biggest worry for H-SC right now is free throw shooting which continues to be dreadful.

One thing Salisbury gets right is their media.  Their basketball web pages are excellent.  Their basketball video production and broadcast were also first class.  Since we are now paying for ODAC games, they need to up their broadcast games; Salisbury is a good reference.
