If I were 17 years old and a very good basketball player, lived in or near Charlotte, had basketball ambition and confidence in my basketball skills and preferred extremely high quality liberal arts colleges, I would go to Davidson - but that iindicates the reason Ben & Jerry's has all them flavors.

Jayhawk....thanks for the info.....interesting that another player has interest to move to New England.  In recent years, a number of fine players have come from the South....after attending schools in the South vice going to a post season prep school in New England.  Presently there is Toomey from NC, Sanderson from SC and Buckner from FL.  Amherst's "recruiting" focus seems to have moved South of late...also Waller'12 was from Tampa Fl.  It is also of interest to me that Williams' latest recruits have come from the North East after several years of bringing in players from the mid and far West regions.
Frank U.......Davidson is indeed a fine college in NC of fine academic rep......have a niece that was recruited by the school in years pass.
However, Davidson is a Div. l BB school and if you can get in there why not go and try for Duke?  Several Curry brothers were recruited by Davidson and both finally went to Duke....the elder one transferred from Davidson to Duke.  One of my favorite MBB coaches, "Lefty" Driesell coached at Davidson and one of his players there ended up coaching and was the AD at UVa.

Frank-
This kid was evidently rejected from Davidson and Williams so he had to settle for Amherst.

Amh63-
In response to your post yesterday I have not had a chance to see the Jeffs yet this year. I know that those close to the NESCAC recruiting scene had Conor Green rated high among incoming FY's.
I note another frosh, Sanderson, on the Jeff's roster is listed at 6'9" 185...if thats not a misprint get that boy to the dining hall....hope Kaasila goes easy on him in practice.

Lumbercat.....Surprised that you are not aware that Connor Green was selected "Gatorade Player of Year" in NH,,,before his prep year, I believe.....has to mean something about his abilities of which I have no accurate knowledge.
With regards to the "slight" Sanderson...my description, here, I will share some "inside" info that may draw the ire of Coach Hixon...again.  After the Homecoming game in Nov., I try to get a peek at the players at practice in LeFrak.  I was allowed to sit on the sidelines and even had some discussions with Coach Hixon with respect to some past and present players.  I had noticed that Sanderson was standing on the sidelines intently watching the other players go through drills, etc.  He had a bandaged hand at the time.  The topic of FY Sanderson came up as a post player....I remarked that he seemed too slight presently.  Coach Hixon responded that Sanderson had quickness for the 5 position...and did not seem to be bothered by his built.
From his "bio", he is a player that has grown rapidly in height in recent years and may grow further.  Amherst had a player that is now playing in Europe that grew quite a bit during his HS years in Mich. and may have even grown a few inches in college.  His skill set was set, imo, when he was younger and shorter....guard/forward quickness and ball handling and outside shooting.  In the brief times that Sanderson has been in games....several minutes in two games.....he has even taken some outside shots...no Kevin Durant by any means!!.
It is also of interest his parents came to the USA from England...maybe the Lord Jeff connection? :)

James Sanderson on Amherst is a player who grew 8 inches in his last three years of high school and is probably still growing. Once he stops growing I am sure he will fill out. Next year's recruit : Jacob Nabatoff is somewhat similar in that he was a guard and grew five inches. see you tube link
as far as Amherst getting players from throughtou the country, nice just from Norhteast,  that has been true since Hixon has been coach

Amh63:

There are 2 Curry brothers. Steph Curry, now with the Golden State Warriors, spent all 4 years at Davidson, where he had a memorable NCAA tourney run. His younger brother, Seth, started at Liberty before transferring to Duke, where he is a senior now.

Their dad, Dell Curry, was quite a baller himself. He went to Virginia Tech and enjoyed a good NBA career, largely with the Charlotte Hornets.

sorry for incorrect spelling  Coach Hixon has been recruiting players from throughout America since he has been coach.

amh63: Some reasons for distinguishing Davidson and Duke - Davidson is a small liberal arts college while Duke is a medium sized university; also under current conditions one might be good enough to play basketball for Davidson and not good enough for Duke but most probably not vice-versa; lastly Davidson is in Davidson, and Duke is in Durham.

Bucket.....thanks for the corrections/clarifications....knew that the father was also a fine Div. 1 player.  Just shows you how age can cloud/confuse the mind.  Doesn't help in spelling.  Seems like Amherst's classic education is wasted on me.
Frank U....Davidson maybe in a town like Williamstown....but Durham is not a bad place to live/work in these days.  Have been in Durham a number of times to visit my prior mention niece...whose husband went to the Divinity School at Duke and works at the hospital complexes in Durham.  The factory area has been renovated for more fashionable businesses.

Lefty was a Major League recruiter, but a Little League coach.  Considering the talent he had in College Park, it's amazing how few big games his teams won.  Fun fact:  He had Moses Malone signed to come to MD before he decided to head to the ABA instead.

amh53: For me it would take a lot more than several shops in an old but renovated industrial complex to make Durham attractive.

Talk of Davidson leads me to register, in order to provide a tale that may be of interest. My dad was on the search committee to replace Davidson's basketball coach, I'm pretty sure when Lefty Driesell went to Maryland. One of the applicants was Bobby Knight, then at Army. A committee member pointed out to Knight that Davidson had high academic standards, and asked whether Knight saw that as a problem. Knight responded, according to my dad, "If I can win with short players, I can win with smart players."

Old Guy

Davidson: As one who spent a lot of time in Student Affairs, my worry about Davidson, a small school with high academic standards, is how well they assimilate their D1 athletes into campus life. I have this concern about Colgate too where I believe the athletes congregate in one or two of the frats. Is it a healthy situation? Do they identify with the whole school. I am impressed with the conference (used to be called the Presidents' Conference) which includes NYU, Johns Hopkins (not lacrosse), Brandeis, CWRU, Carnegie Mellon, Rochester, Wash. U, etc., Ivy League size schools with high academic standards that play D3 sports. Strikes me as smart. Am I missing something?

Sanderson, Amherst's slender frosh: Andrew Locke, when he arrived at Middlebury, was a leaf in the wind - and worked very hard to become bigger and stronger and eventually was a game-changer like few others. You can't coach a guy to be 6'10". My favorite statistical accomplishment is Locke's leading the NESCAC in blocked shots as a frosh, playing but eight minutes a game.
