You're also going to see increased pressure to justify athletic spending at schools far more concerned with academics.  The NESCAC might be wealthy, but the money's not unlimited.  I think you're going to see more questions about whether robust intercollegiate athletics is as much an asset to the institution as it used to be.  Media coverage of D1 is certainly not helping any.

As well as the political environment, some alums are just not giving the way the used to due to how the schools are handling politics.

Maybe this is due to reaching a financial settlement. But he is gone.

Who says he hasn't resigned yet?......He's being fired by all known accounts, the terms of the contract will dictate the financials of the severance. You don't announce you are canning a guy and then proceed with "negotiations"

Unless....he is being let go for due cause which takes Colby off the hook in terms of responsibility for remaining year(s) and future terms of of the contract.

If they need him to resign before they can finalize his departure there may be other issues involved but I will yield to the many barristers on this board who are better schooled than me in employment law.

What kind of job protection does a coach have, if any?

I would be surprised if any NESCAC coach is on a contract.

Contracts are typically for positions and employees that have a market value that exceeds that of a basketball coach at 2,000 student Division III school.

Colby probably employs coaches as exempt, at-will employees, allowing the employer or employee to separate at anytime without notice with limited protections against discrimination, retaliation.

I won't speak for any basketball coaches but I can confirm multiple NESCAC Head Football Coaches are on 3 year contracts.

Surprised by this - figured if he was going to stay in D3 he would have stayed in Wesleyan. Nice change of scenery I'm sure and maybe an academic component. Nice to have him out of the league!

Yes -- I can confirm that NESCAC coaches are contract employees, with 3 years being a common term. If a college wishes to terminate an employment relationship with a coach before the end of the term of the contract, it is typically on the hook for whatever compensation may be owed to the coach for the remaining term of the contract.
