Homecoming week at Bethel.

Football will be doing a Fall Game Scrimmage with a webcast.

Navy vs. White. Equal teams that were drafted by the coaches. Might almost feel like a normal fall Saturday!

Here are a handful of games being played between teams in the MIAA and HCAC, starting this Saturday:

Bethel Homecoming/Fall Game was fun. Almost felt normal on a crisp fall afternoon. Except for the limit on fans and having to play our own guys.

Fun format. Typical game, 12 minute quarters. Plus they ran two overtime scenarios. No punting or kickoffs, a declared punt netted you 35 yds of flipped field position. Given the truncated 'fall camp' and mixed rosters (especially on the Olines) it wasn't gameday precision, but it got the players a lot of gameday type reps.

Silver lining was that with Roste being held out for precautionary reasons, we got to see Bolte and Gadappee at QB as well as the new toys at WR. Both looked good, Bolte especially had some really nice runs and got into a better rhythm throwing the ball. Kidder is gonna be a stud, 6'3 with speed, would never have thought he was a true frosh.

Spring Ball - sounds like the MIAC is still kicking around what to do, with several scenarios in play. Practice starting around March 1, games/scrimmages starting around end of March.

I'd assume SJU/UST want real games, because of final Tommy/Johnnie. Some are saying they should crown a conference champ off of a 5 game non-round robin schedule. That seems asinine to me. If you haven't played half the league and there's no conference title game, you have zero sense of who the champion is.

Others are in favor of just doing scrimmages with whatever teams you choose. Has merit from the standpoint it gets kids lots of reps, you could remove special teams and quick whistle on the QB's. If you're gonna play in the Spring and again in the fall, something would need to be done to limit potential injuries. Scrimmages would give guys lots of extra practices and reps, but you could mitigate some injury elements and control things a bit.

If you go for games, I'd say you start with the new 2021 divisions. CSS and MAC won't be in the mix yet, but UST would still be scheduled. That would get the majority of the matchups set. Then just throw UST into the mix against the top tier (protect the teams that don't want to face UST from having to play them again). Teams not playing UST would draw two crossover matchups. You'd just need to decide do you want the teams playing UST to play another similar caliber crossover game, or give them a crossover against a (recently) lower tier team. AKA, do Bethel and SJU play for game five, or are they Bethel v. Carleton and SJU vs. Augsburg type matchups?

Northwoods: Carleton, GAC, SJU, St. Olaf, (no CSS yet)
Skyline: Augsburg, Bethel, Concordia, Hamline, (no MAC yet)
UST Opponents: Bethel, SJU, GAC, Concordia, St. Olaf

Potential Bethel Slate:
Augsburg, Concordia, Hamline, UST, TBD Crossover

Potential SJU Slate:
Carleton, GAC, St. Olaf, UST, TBD Crossover

Potential Carleton Slate:
GAC, SJU, St. Olaf, Augsburg/Hamline, TBD Crossover

My thought is, let UST/SJU play a real game, so they can have Johnnie/Tommie for final bragging rights. Then let the other teams schedule scrimmages for however many games they want, up to 5. In a real game, you've got your typical 35-40 kids getting all the reps, and taking all risk on the Spring to Fall turnaround. If you go scrimmages, you have more freedom to go deeper into the roster (no one is playing for a W/L), so you can play upwards of 60+ players. Both to develop players, but also manage reps with the fall 2021 season looming.

Nice feedback for SJU.

The Saint John's University football program was ranked No. 1 in College Athletic Advisor's Top 20 Programs That Inspire on Wednesday, Oct. 7.

The program rankings are open to all 4-year, collegiate-level programs outside of NCAA Division I and are based on a subjective assessment of student experience in four areas:

-Holistic development of student-athletes in the institution;
-Academic achievement and support for the academic success of student-athletes;
-Overall college experience for participants within the program;
-Affordability/graduation rates/student satisfaction.

Surprisingly, SJU is the only MIAC program in the list.

I agree. Some good schools in the MIAC.

At first glance, it looks like a really random list of small colleges. I'd never heard of the CAA before, and I'm never sure how much weight to put in "Best College" list. They also readily admit that it's based off of a subjective assessment, so I think it maybe makes for a nice Marketing link/tweet for SJU, but little more.

Anecdotally, my cousin is a prof at Chapman (former D1 Track athlete who gets the importance of college athletics), and she's been shocked by how small a role football and other sports play in campus life there. Yet they make this list. FWIW.

Re: Cardboard Fake Fans

Maybe it's just me, but unless a line drive foul or an errant punt wipes one of these things out at an MLB or NFL game, I see no use for them.
