I've spent a lot of time out there (Salem & Albany mostly) and figured it was just greenhorn reporting.  

Albany? I hope you brought a clothespin for your nose! They have some kind of processing plant that you can smell while driving 65 miles an hour down I5 with the windows closed!

I remember that it wasn't as sweet as the breath of a vigin but I had a titanium foundry there which was so bad it masked a lot of it.
