Interesting to read about the conservative play calling at the end of the STJ/ Bethel game. Against Wheaton Bethel needed a first down to seal the game and they threw the ball 2 out of 3 downs. At the time I questioned why they didn't pound Flannery 3 times and make Wheaton use their timeouts. If they had done that, Bethel would have won the Wheaton game. Wheaton got the 3 and out, made Bethel punt and worked clock and the field to win on the last play. That result may have had an impact on the end of the St John's game Saturday.

Terrible playcalling by Bethel.  They picked up 7 yards on first down and got stuffed on second down.  The Johnnie defense was absolutely stacked up in the middle.  A short dump over the middle to the tight end or even an off-tackle play would have likely sealed the game (or at the very least, been no worse), but they chose to QB sneak it.  Getting 3 yards on a QB sneak isn't too realistic.

A tradition unrivaled...

Johnnie Red

Great day for the Red and White Saturday. My Badger son was very happy! Thanks to everyone who donated to support the family of the late Jim Goodman, class of `84, at the Stiftungsfestivities.

Where should we have our pregame gathering this Saturday when the Johnnies travel to Piperville? In the past we have met at the Nook at the corner of Randolph and Hamline Ave in St. Paul. Very good burgers. Another option would be O'Gara's on Snelling Ave.

Thank you Wooderson- awesome to watch over & over again.

GoldandBlueBU- Bethel is far from done. If the Royals run the table, they have a strong case for a Pool C bid, losing to the #4 @ the time Wheaton & the #6 @ the time SJU by tight scores looks strong for them BUT they need to run the table.

I agree with you on that.  Bethel is a very impressive team.  And depending on what happens, if they run the table they could still end up with an automatic bid.  For our sake though, let's hope the stars don't align quite as well for Bethel this year as they did for SJU last year with two losses!

I don't think the Cobbers are out of consideration either.  They beat #8 (at the time), lost to #6 (at the time), and lost to a highly rated Bethel. A win-out for the Cobbers, particularly if they thump UST (at #15) this coming weekend could put them in consideration as well.

The cobbers have had two weeks to prepare for a tough UST team.  If the cobbers take care of the ball and chew up the clock I think they have a good chance to beating UST.

The Cobbers will be a good test for UST Saturday. One could make the argument that St. Olaf was pretty hot coming in with big wins over Luther and Pacific Lutheran, and a 4 game win streak over UST, so it won't be their first big test. I think the Cobbers will be pretty excited to get back out there after not showing too much against SJU and Bethel, so they will be tough.

That's not exactly bragging – those are just statistics, so try not to take things so personal.  I wonder what those statistics would look like had the starters played the bulk of the 3rd and 4th quarters.  But we shall see how those statistics look like after the next two weeks – that will tell the real story.

GoldandBlueBU

Interesting, thanks for the education.  I had thought that a 2 loss non conference champ was out of the running for sure.

I was impressed by Johnson (SJU's Johnson) too.  He was a solid, shifty runner. He especially looked good on those draw plays.

I agree about that last play call for BU Duff.  Why are you calling a qb sneak when you need anything more than a yard?  Especially when BU struggled running up the middle most of the game? oh well...

Anyway, that was a lot of fun to watch on saturday...great game.  If only the SJU offense had decided to stay checked out for 1 more quarter.

Better than Olaf.

Another bad coaching call from the Olaf game:  Down 10 they needed to onside with around 4:30 left or so.  Both teams have their onside packages in and Olaf pooches it in the air about 20 yards for a fair catch.  You don't pooch an onside when the other team is prepared for it, just a bad coaching call.  After last year's pounding their coach said, "never again", nice work with that one.

If you're pointing out Olaf coaching mistakes don't forget the complete lack of preparation for Carleton's tackle screen.  I'm sure any Bethel fans here know the play I'm talking about.

I have to completely disagree with that statement.  Here's why:

I watched Carleton play Macalester, and MAC had a corner that when the ball was in the air towards his guy, he started running away from the receiver towards the middle of the field.  Now, this may look like one of the worst plays ever by a corner, but I now know that he was... crap, I can't even think of anything clever to say what he may have been doing, they're just that bad.

I wonder if Terry Horan spent the off week running ball handling drills...look at all the turnovers they had and in the Johnnies game especially two fumbles inside the 10 that even if resulted in FG's being put up on the scoreboard could have changed the end of the game...

IF the Cobbers hold onto the ball and get the lead which is the most important thing with that offense, they can win but that sometimes is easier said than done.
