Question - if Sam Sura finished 2nd for the Gagliardi Trophy (meaning he was regarded as the 2nd most outstanding DIII player), how come he only made D3football.com's All America third team?   ???

"The Gagliardi Trophy is a football award but incorporates the philosophy of the well-rounded student-athlete."

The All-American team takes into account what they do strictly on the field. The Gagliardi Trophy takes into account all things on and off of the field. So while he may have been 2nd in the voting of a "well-round student-athlete", he was not rated that highly for his on the field accomplishments.

That's my understanding at least.

The justification I saw for Jordan Roberts being named D3Football Offensive POTY (instead of Sura or Callahan) was that the Gagliardi Trophy also places some emphasis on a player's career, not just a single season.

While the Gagliardi Trophy includes academics and community service as well as athletics, it is supposedly only for the current year, not career. Otherwise underclassmen would have little to no chance of being considered.

From Wikipedia:

"The Gagliardi Trophy was first presented in 1993 to the Outstanding Division III college football player of the year by the Jostens Company and the J-Club of Saint John's University in Minnesota."

It definitely is not part of the voters' criteria.

However, since many of the voters are not people who follow D-III on an ongoing basis, I suspect it doesn't hurt to see a player on the ballot two years in a row. There's also a few voters with St. John's ties, which is understandable. (It's not a ton but there's a handful.)

hazzben,

For the record I disagree with you again  :o

see if you  can keep up with this ? First bold, (1) I was listening to the game audio and posting as it was being played ..Hence many posts. Which i have done since the cats have entered the Ncaa back in 90's...  (2) I did not get the memo about ONLY posting on MY board .. That's not going to happen unless controlled by The Guru, (which has been done too ) :)
so if you don't like the facts i write about or commit on DON"T read it.  ;D
3. Jabs and Gloat,   I see as FACTS and Commits., that's what i do ,never have been one to color in the lines. NOT just on YOUR board but all the boards..  North, East,South and West.  (4)    Your right here bro  lost cause , :-*  Sorry Charlie... I still have a seat at the kids table.....
Better luck next year after your 4-4 MIAC... ;D :-*  Get over it ... This is just a BOARD ... C'mon man.... if it gets to hot in the kitchen get out...  ;D :P :-*

Mele Kalikimaka

I've never heard the term 'commit' used in the way you have been using it - commit on/facts and commits?  Do you mean 'comment'?

Nope, he's just a 'committed' emoticon aficionado  8-)

wow,   :o ( ex- copy editor )  i was surprised? ;D  And i followed  your  rules all year...  ???  Congrats on another fine year for D3football.com,  Well Done 8-)

Remember boys,    IT'S ONLY A BOARD...  From One Richard Cranium to all the others on here  stir that pot. ;D :-*

Two extra years to reach maturity makes a world of difference for some folks, I would have been one of them..., I better clarify, not as a athlete but student wise.

Hey, Stanbob, it's good to see you drop by. It's been a while since you last posted.

I agree on maturity.

Thanks Oz, it's been a pretty strange year to say the least.

Well, I took the family to see a high school basketball game but unfortunately Rapids was beaten pretty thoroughly by Esko.

It was pretty good to hear the school song is exactly that same as it was back when we were still the Indians.  Until Mrs Oz pointed out that the tune was very similar to It's a Long Way to Tipperary.

It was also disappointing for the Oz girls that the pep band and cheerleaders weren't at the game either. They were hoping to see High School Musical in the flesh.

But I enjoyed the night. It's funny how not much changes. Other than a new basketball stadium the night was almost exactly like it was the last time I saw a game in high school.

Well, except that you are now MUCH older! ;D

(Sorry, couldn't resist.  But I'm pretty sure I am much older yet, so I can get away with an age joke.)

If the pep band wasn't there, were you singing the school song a capella?  If you're sticking arond through next week I'm sure I could recommend some games with rowdier crowds, cheerleaders and a much higher level of talent, but you will still have to explain that the star point guard doesn't start breaking into songs until the bigger games in February and March.

Ha.  It was a recording. Although a girl sang the national anthem without accompaniment and was very good.

To paraphrase a Gagliardi joke, with all the nice things said about Sura in that video, you'd think he'd at least have the decency to be dead.  :D
