Maybe if we started with what's safe, the players and the game would be better off. It might not be as fun to watch, but that's the price of safeguarding our children.

This.

I just read through the dialogue here, as I was off the interwebs after noon yesterday. Thanx to all who have contributed. From what I've seen here, from arguably the most informed fans of MIAC football, it seems that those in charge have done a very poor job at getting this new policy advertised to all involved. BDBob's point is especially poignant, not so much because the students have no say, but because it exposes how poorly this new policy was administered. Oz's comments on transparency through the process would have added heaps of credibility to the conference leaders, but instead, because it appears to come out of a void, are now taking sniper shots.

FWIW, hopefully Pat was able to point some of the MIAC policy makers to this board so they can see some of the criticism from their poor decision making. My guess is that they didn't give one whit of consideration to the loyal fans of the independent institutions, nor considered any input from them. "Just ignore the man behind the curtain."

Definitely the best board I am a member of - thanx Pat!

Well, it is supposed to be in the 60's and partly cloudy on the coast tomorrow. With the game delay I guess I will head on over. I went over last weekend and saw a family of whales and a naked guy on the beach. Who knows what tomorrow will bring! ;)

Knowing just what I've been told about such places, it's surprising you were able to tell the difference between the two.

Off to Auggie land to put some fine Cobber moments on the ol' mental highlight reel. 10am kickoff. Good thing Einsteins is across the lot for some fine bagels and coffee tailgating. Roll Cobbs!

We'll have to do some bulletin board hopping today with all the different game times.
If the human brain were so simple that we could fully understand it...we would be so simple that we couldn't.

The best bit is that I've been able to get blasted at a dinner party and then game doesn't start until 10am.  All good for me!

There are a lot of constituents for a college conference at the Division III level. Fans are on the list, but they're not very high on the list since everything around here is a non-revenue sport. It's not high enough on the list to trump player safety.

I don't think there is poor decision-making here. I understand people may not appreciate the decisions that were made, but they've been made with some pretty sound reasoning. I do think there is definite room for the MIAC to communicate more around these changes, how they were brought about and why they are necessary, but that's up to them to get more in-depth about it than we had in two and a half minutes.

Here was the original announcement, which I know people here have already seen:

Them's who shouldn't always do! ;)

When the guy first dropped trou I was concerned that we might be watching a suicide attempt, but he just frolicked in the waves for a couple of seconds (that water is cold) and put his undies back on. When I mentioned to my friend (a former lifeguard) that I thought he was going to have to make a rescue, he dryly informed me he is not open water certified. No one wants to have deal with the crazy naked guy! And this happened right where the path from the parking lot meets the beach, so plenty of foot traffic. The guy clearly wanted an audience!

Could you tell if he was a JOHNNIE or a Tommie?   ;D

In game update board....C'mon man!
http://www.d3boards.com/index.php?topic=7466.9540

Didn't really think it necessary to make folks go over there for one single update. That board is mostly used for the Johnnie smoke fest and y'all don't play till tonight.

After tonight we will know that there are 3 good teams in the MIAC, 4 that are bad and 1 that we are still unsure about.

Speaking of "safe" football...I was a high school game tonight where a PAT snap was bungled. The ball rolled about 12 yard and the holder scrambled to pick up the ball but dropped it and was tackled. The kicker (a former soccer player or foreign exchange student I'm assuming) just ambled about and finally picked up the ball as two defenders converged. He stood straight up with a live ball in his hands at the 25 yard line as a defender running full speed trucked him...then the ref threw a flag for a clean hit on an offensive player standing and holding a live ball. The kicked should have been penalized for being stupid...just fall on the ball for crap sake!

What I still don't understand about the call was that the ball was live...albeit 25 yards from the goal line. I get it that this kicker wasn't going to be able to do anything but he made the mistake of picking up a live ball and standing flat footed with it.
The whistle had not been blown and the defender was running full speed and couldn't stop.
The officials assessed a 15 yard penalty for unnecessary roughness on the kickoff but did not give them another opportunity for the PAT.
I wish I could share the video I shot however it is not mine to share.

Interesting - if that is what happened then I don't believe the penalty was applied properly. Since it was a live ball foul, they should have gotten another chance at the PAT. The only time it should be applied that way is if it was a dead ball foul. Are you sure there wasn't something else that went on after the whistle? Just guessing here.

Wow - so much consternation over something that will probably only affect games this week. Obviously a slow week for football discussion which I attribute to the opponents of the Tommies and Johnnies this week. I have no problem with erring on the side of caution, especially for just one week, it's not the end of football as we know it.  ;)

I can only bang my head against the wall so many times until I've got a headache.

I was hoping that someone would make an effort to at least demonstrate that a game, as opposed to early pre-season training, in the heat is dangerous and must be closely managed for heat issues.  A tough ask, I know, as I can't find a single reference to any sort of serious in-game heat injury but it must exist or else the MIAC wouldn't have taken this step, right?  I can't even find a reference to anyone expressing a concern about heat related play in gridiron.  But that's surely due to woefully inadequate search skills.

I do know, however, that I happen to live on the driest and hottest continent this delicate blue orb hosts.  And here heat related sports science is virtually a primary industry.  In-game heat protocols are universal and well-respected. And so far less reactive than what the MIAC has instituted that I'm sure this was a poorly considered decision. #2 was quite a serious gymnast at one point and she trained unless the wet-bulb temp reached 36 on Satan's scale (97 Fahrenheit). And now that she coaches she has heat awareness as part of her first aid training and coaches certification.  Despite rumours of ceaseless Aussie drunkenness, I'm pretty sure the parents here are not eager to endanger their kids, or themselves,  for selfish entertainment purposes.

Moral compass, indeed.

EDIT: http://smjfl.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/AFL-Victoria-Extreme-Weather-Policy-2017.pdf

Temperatures more extreme, reactions less so.  In short:

* Over 36 (97) then the game will not commence.  If it increases to over 36 during the game it is paused or stopped, depending.
* Over 32 (90) then the game will be shortened, umpire enforced re-hydration, longer quarter time breaks, extra substitutions, spray fans, ice vests, etc.
* Below 32 then it's play on.

(The rules I list above are for the small semi-pro leagues which have similar financial resources and intensity as a mid-tier MIAC team. The amateur leagues, more akin to VFL softball in intensity, will consider delaying matches if the temp is 32 at game time.)

Oz, you don't have to convince me that when it comes to common-sense rules and laws involving the public safety of its citizens, Australia is light years ahead of us over in the States...!  ;)

All this conversation aside, chances are in three years days no one is going to remember what time the games of Sept. 15, 2018, were played.

Unless of course the turf tonight leads to a Johnnie upset. Then there will be hell to pay.

In that 80-70 Elk River win, Elk River had 636 rushing yards. One kid had 268 on seven carries. The team had 0 passing yards.

Buffalo QB Aidan Bouman with 542 passing yards and state-record 8 touchdowns. Todd Bouman, Aidan's dad, coaches Buffalo. You remember Todd from his days as a fantastic dunker for Russell-Tyler-Ruthton and, oh yeah, as a former Vikings QB.
