The largest raise I have ever received were my kids hitting school age, and leaving the pre-school and child care tab behind. At least a few years the MSP market was the 3rd most expensive market in the country for child care. I think we were in rare air with San Fran, NYC, Boston and DC.

DuffMan

Our youngest is in kindergarten now (WOOHOO!).  We were at an in-home and were paying between $180-$200/week per child, depending  on age.  Compared to friends, I feel ours was very reasonable.

A tradition unrivaled...

I would suggest not taking everything I or others post so literally. I ran  the St. Paul highland softball 🥎 program for a about 3-4 years (something i am very proud of doing) and coached my daughters teams on and off during that time. I organized and conducted winter pitching and skills clinics (many of which my kids did not attend). I oversaw registration, tryouts, team selection, in-house drafts for summer and fall ball...addressed parent complaints, scheduled practice slots, games times, umpires...hauled equipment, organized storage sheds, stored gear in my own garage, arranged for fundraising, ordered uniforms each season for 150-200 girls. At times it was more work than my actual job.

I've been to more softball and volleyball games and tournaments than I can even count or even remember.

Softball tournaments in Eagan, Mankato, St Paul, Cold Spring, Ham Lake, Hudson, Shakopee, Lakeville, Farmington, Empire Township, Eden Prairie, Plymouth, Cottage Grove, Champlain Park, and Inver Grove to name a few...wet grass / wet shoes, rain / torrential downpours, wind, snow (MiacMan actually was at one in Lakeville filing in as coach for his daughter and coaching my daughter about 7 years ago), freezing cold, boiling hot!

Volleyball in Bloomington, Spring Lake Park, Hopkins, Maple Grove, Monticello, Duluth, Whapeton / Breckenridge, St Louis Park, Las Vegas, Minneapolis, Orlando and that's probably not all.

So forgive me if I'm a bit cynical, flippant, and or sarcastic about filling out paperwork, liability and medical forms for the 43rd time....I'm pretty sure when my parents signed me up for Henderson Little League around 1979 or 80 it was one sheet of paper and a check for about $10. Compare that to JO volleyball that costs anywhere from $1400 to about $10,000 (w air travel and hotel) and offers a "check box" if you would like to receive emails and assistance getting your player recruited to play in college...WTH??? She's 5'7" at best!!  :P

Sounds like you are a dedicated parent, so good for you. I guess I'm a little sensitive when parents complain about something trivial like spending 45 minutes to fill out forms for their kids. I lost one of my boys and wish he was still here so I could 'waste' my time on/for him. Things like that change your outlook on life. I will try and not take things so literally in the future.

I can vouch for Faunchy on giving his time particularly when it comes to girl's fastpitch, he has definitely paid his dues. For Faunchy it's all about the money. Remember what I said about midget tootsie rolls 1/per kid, It's all true!  ;D

Mr.MIAC

Here's where we're at with childcare. We live downtown DC and currently pay just over $2.8K per month for our toddler's daycare. Next year he'll be old enough to qualify for public pre-kindergarten, which is free in DC. The hitch is that there are only a handful of quality public pre-kindergarten programs in the city and we'd have to "win" a place in one of these programs via a lottery, which is already weighted against us for a number of demographic reasons. If he doesn't make it into one of these programs, we'll probably move outside the city. There are great programs in the suburbs; they're not free, but the cost is less than we're paying now. We're also talking about having another child or two over the next few years. If this happens we could be looking at $6-9K per month in childcare. Being a Tommie, my salary is obviously substantial. ;) However, these childcare costs and the fact that we'd have lucrative employment opportunities in the Twin Cities got me thinking about moving back home.

Speaking of costs, how much do/did folks here pay per month for childcare (daycare, full-time baby-sitter, etc.)?

Opportunity costs in the thousands, actual costs: basically $0

What would you say is the average cost for professional (credentialed) childcare in the Twin Cities?

We paid $327 / week for infant care at a center in Golden Valley...the costs would have gradually declined as the kids got older, but my wife started staying home after about a year and a half of daycare.
We pay $165/week per child for an in-home daycare in Savage.  Just a bit less expensive than sending them to play volleyball full-time.

OzJohnnie

I've got a friend with a son that's heavily into soccer with a shot at professional play.  Multiple trips to Europe for camps and scouting.  We went to their house for dinner lately and had boiled old t-shirts with ketchup and bbq rat meat.  Was delicious.

REV, YIKES! You could send your kid to "The Blake School" or a "Country Day School" for that, ouch! I wish I had known this about you when I was in development at UST  ;D

Some have called me committed or maybe they were saying I should be committed. I have trouble paying attention sometimes!

I still say your daughter should be coaching girls softball. She's a natural coach. Must have got that skill set from mom.

The best of all my kids comes from their Mother, I can't deny it. She's busy raising a D1 athlete (Future Tommie) right now. Although, we have talked about taking a team together one of these summers.

Question? Aren't any of you Johnnie fans concerned that your team isn't playing very well and just may have peaked in mid-season about the time they played the Tommies? The fact is the last four games they have played two cream puffs (Hamline, Rose Hulman) and lost to Concordia and should have lost to Aurora. Before the Aurora game people were talking triple monkey stomps and then after the game people were comparing them to Mount Union? The reality is Aurora is a solid up and coming team but probably more comparable to Concordia or Gustavus at best. I think the Johnnies will win this week because they are battle tested from playing a MIAC schedule, which was up this year (it's a shame only 1 team got the dance this year when conferences like SCIAC, and ARC got 2) Anyway, my point is that I think there is reason to be concerned how far the Jays can go if they don't start putting together complete games (Offense/Defense/Special Teams)

I think our defense is highly suspect. After the GAC game i said we are vulnerable over the top. I was surprised that U$T didn't throw over the middle 10-20 yds downfield to their tight ends more.

I don't think at the time UST was all that confident in Tommy Dolan, who really improved a great deal and was a pretty good QB by the end of the year.
