Liked it overall - I'd ask Chat to revise it with a tone that reflected that everyone was actually quite happy to see it die.

Not sure I've ever read an obit that said, "Everyone was glad the son of a b***ch is dead!" I wonder how ChatGPT would handle that!
Sing us a song, you're the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
Well, we're all in the mood for a melody
And you've got us feelin' alright.

Quote from: HSCTiger74 on June 03, 2025, 11:33:37 PMOz, what's up with the Hawks? I can't remember the last time they lost three in a row (although I'll admit that I don't follow the matches as closely as I used to).

Two things, unfortunately.

First, the forward line has been under-manned all season. We've cobbled together a line that doesn't include a big gorilla to anchor it. Well-structured defence can just sit on everyone.  So if you can only generate limited scoring shots, you must score six every time. We haven't.

Second, our effort has really fallen off. Footy is a game that requires players to push themselves beyond their limits when the lungs are burning and the muscles are so tired. We've had a run against three top teams, the fourth in another day, and they have simply outworked us.  Good footy is 90% effort. If you're willing to outwork the other team (tackle more, repeat sprints in defence to maintain zones, thankless repeat sprints off the ball in offence to provide options that may never be taken) then you win nearly every time.

We'll see how we go. Four quarters of 100% effort is the only way to win at the top of the ladder.

Thanks. I obviously don't know all the detailed ins and outs of footy, but I've watched enough matches over the years to get what you're saying. And congrats on the win over WB.

It's great to get some Johnnie content.  Thanks for the link, faunch.

It looks like Gary hopes to avoid a rotating quarterback.  I hope he does.  I don't reckon it works anywhere but at Mount Union.

This was new to me.  I liked "Blakely" as the RB.  Anyways, let's hope he's a great coach, too.

QuoteWill Blakey was St. John's second-leading rusher last season with 93 carries for 457 yards and 10 TDs. But at 26 years old, the six-year Air Force veteran decided to become the team's running backs coach instead of continuing his playing career.

Linfield had success with it last year, with one QB being primarily a runner (104 rush att vs. 91 passes) and the other a passer (40 rush att vs. 298 passes).

Initial Team Standings about IREC teams from ESRA. Some schools from Australia took home some bling, as did the U of MN. Sorry, I don't remember which team you had some affiliation with Oz. Complete list here: https://www.soundingrocket.org/news1

The Aussies did all right.  I scanned the list of schools in the registration spreadsheet and didn't see BU.  Is this the comp your squad participates in?

My two youngest are still attending Monash University, and the eldest graduated from the University of Melbourne. Not one of them is close to rocketry. As they freely tell me, they're not nerds like their old man. Well, this old nerd loved model rockets (regretting only that he didn't have collegiate rocket competition experience), and he did alright for them.

BU was forced to drop out of this competition from lack of funds back in January. It costs a lot to send even half a dozen students half-way across the country for a full week. It's got to be that much more to send students overseas via commercial airline - oof-da! We're still awaiting word on how we did in the regional competition, which happens to be held here in MN, so travel costs are quite a bit more manageable. As I hear more, I'll share.

The football kickoff luncheon is on August 20th.  Hopefully, someone on the boards goes to that and can report back as it's the next big news event available to us.

Fingers crossed that a 6'4 260ish d-lineman transfers in over the summer and maybe brings a fast and beast of a linebacker or d-end along with a shut down corner. I feel like our offense will be more than capable again but we need to shore things up on D.

What does it cost to send 70 football players around Minnesota 6 times a year?  Figure out the other sports on your own.

Gary shared in a story earlier this spring that transportation and and overnight stay can cost around $20k...i realize that most MIAC games don't require an overnight stay. I'm guessing that a coach bus or busses and meals for a day trip can cost about $10k

Is the point here that if they can afford to send the football team to away games then they should be able to send the rocket team to nationals for a week?

I'm all for the rocket team going to these events, even nationally. But the football team is a totally different budget, and a fixed/known cost that doesn't change much YOY. In a perfect world it'd be a yes to all of them.

In a similar vein, Bethel had to do some locker room expansion work this year with the size of the incoming class. Sounds like around 50+ incoming freshman/transfers. Knowing it'd require additional space, coaches were still trying to be picky about who was invited. Quality and quantity of recruit seem to be trending up. Which is good, since there are plenty of gaps to fill with all the Covid SR's graduating out.
