The long wait for Johnnie football to return is finally only a mere 4 hours away! I read in an article that both of our potential starting QBs are lefties! Not only will it take some getting used to a QB not named Syverson, but will take some adjusting to watching a leftie! Go Johnnies!

SJU football fans haven't seen a LH QB as a starter for at least 40 years, maybe longer......

I thought they both looked great. Wonder if there'd be a competition if Cooper Drews was still at St John's - Not a bad problem to have having two capable QBs it appears with Dittbenner and Feeney

Quote from: OzJohnnie on September 12, 2025, 09:10:17 PMThe Hawks demolished the Crows over in Adelaide, taking a leaf out of duffman's Road Warrior handbook.  They put on a master class for high-pressure, every-player-contributing in a complete game effort football.

Now we're about to enjoy another chapter in the greatest rivalry in Australian sport when the Hawks play Geelong at the MCG on Friday night in the Preliminary Final, the winner earning a run in the Grand Final.  The whole Oz family will be going and we can't wait (a huge benefit of being a Melbourne Cricket Club member - or we'll be trying.  I'll hit that Ticketek website the second seats in the Member's go on sale).

Not Essendon/Collingwood? Either way, good luck to the Hawks.

Royals certainly gave Drews plenty of game time. He threw 53 times and first teamers played fairly deep in fourth.

Lots of points left on the field. Could have scored 60+ but three drives ended in FGs. The WRs obviously needed some more playing time, especially since we lost one on the first drive which loooked like a shoulder/collarbone injury. He went to the lockers and didn't get back in the game.

Quote from: art76 on September 11, 2025, 03:48:31 PMI hope to be able to get to the BU/UNWSP game, though I may be tardy. If all goes as planned, I will end the day having achieved my NAR L3 Certification, which is the highest a person can get. I'll be up on the sod farms in North Branch most of the day getting in two flights, a shake down flight to @9000 feet, and then the certification attempt going to @11000 feet. I'll let everyone here know how it goes.

I never made it to the game as I had to spend time in the workshop/garage last night to resolve some fitment issues with my rocket. Went back out to the field this morning and got 'er done! I am now NAR Level 3 Certified. Once I get all the data points gathered I'll share some tidbits.

Two drives stalled after Head Linesman blew a neutral zone call. They do a hard count, DE jumped into neutral zone and LT reacted. Both called against BU, the coaches were pretty peaved.

That said, I figured the starting WR's would play deep into the 4th regardless of the score. They need to break in a totally new group. Bummer to lose a guy to what appeared to be a collar bone.

Also thought Drews didn't look as sharp as I expected. He was low on his lateral/bubble type throws all night. Also had two times he was lucky to get away with an incompletion and not an INT. Felt like he was a little overconfident and inaccurate. It's the first game, some settling in is probably to be expected. But I expected more from him. Glad he's got two more games before SJU.

D looked solid with lots of speed, but we'll be smaller up front than we were last year. Not enough to tell how good we really are since the secondary wasn't really tested. Running backs are deep, I thought we could have run the ball a lot more. But I think some of that was likely game planning to get the WR's a lot of work/reps as our least experienced unit. Interesting wrinkle was they moved All MIAC RT Roman Janes to TE. He cut like 25 lbs and is a very good athlete. I like how they're using him, but it'll take some time until he's fully settled lining up out wide. Lot's of upside with that move IMO.

Was happy to see Taye Manns get a good number of touches.  Since my Duluth high school closed, I started following Denfeld a bit more, and he had a very solid career there.  It's been a few years since BU has had a game changing running back.  Geebli is solid no doubt, but not quite a star.

Healthy Geebli is a game changer. We haven't seen that version of him since 2nd half of freshman year and it started to show up again in the playoffs. He's an FCS level player who got overlooked since he was at Coon Rapids. But agree that I think he and Taye Manns are going to be a really good combo.

Yeah I noticed that too - I can't say it's not effective given how many points BU scores, but sometimes I wish they'd run some other routes besides the lateral throws more.

The first week of MIAC action brings:
Mac @ Carleton
Johnnies @ Pipers (first meeting since 2019)
Cobbers @ Oles
Auggie Tech @ Schollies
Bethel @ Gusties

To me, the Bethel/Gustie game is the only somewhat interesting matchup.  I think BU wins, but it should (hopefully) be a better test than fake Northwestern.

A tradition unrivaled...
MIAC Champions: '32, '35, '36, '38, '53, '62, '63, '65, '71, '74, '75, '76, '77, '79, '82, '85, '89, '91, '93, '94, '95, '96, '98, '99, '01, '02, '03, '05, '06, '08, '09, '14, '18, '19, '21, '22, '24

We played well, but also had a lot to clean up against UNW. GAC will be a big jump up in competition, but I also have no idea what to expect from GAC yet this year.

I'll admit that we were so spoiled by our D last year that I was little frustrated after last Saturday, only to look at the stats and realize outside of one long run and one long pass completion we basically dominated them again. GAC should be a better gauge of how the D really looks year over year.
