Season tix renewed!  And with Jr. in 9th grade this fall (i.e. no Saturday games for him), I will be able to get to more games.

A tradition unrivaled...

Quote from: Texas Ole on May 22, 2026, 03:25:29 PMAny of y'all ever done any sandhill crane hunting in MN?  Those are some big birds, and they are vicious.  Lots of fun to shoot.  Meat is a little overrated, but still very good!

Back when I lived in Alaska, I'd hunt ducks and geese with a bunch of FBI guys on the tidal flats across Cook Inlet from Anchorage. Great fun. Floatplane access only.

The SAC (a Mac grad from Anoka) saw some guys nearby shoot a swan. Turns out they were a bunch of lawyers. He offered them a choice ... an immediate swan dinner or a call to Fish & Game.

Apparently not the tastiest of waterfowl.

We haven't had a good beer commercial in a while.  Here's another classic from Carlton.

Heh. The first one in that list is imprinted on my brain as the Hamm's commercial.

I considered it.  I even consulted the wife.  We left it off.

Had to surrender early. Cleaning lady texted yesterday asking if she could turn it on ... couldn't think how I'd explain her needing to sweat like a stuck hog because I want to bump my street cred with a bunch of random, middle aged D3 football nerds  :)

Quote from: Texas Ole on May 27, 2026, 05:48:39 PMWhat's everyone's favorite thing to hunt?  Love me some dove hunting.  High limits with lots of shooting.  If it flies and dies I am in.  Deer hunting is nice, but in Texas it's not the most sporting of activities in my opinion.  Hoping to do some hog/predator hunting with the thermal scope soon.
Deer, but wild love to do wild hog. I'm glad we don't have them in the area of our family farm where I hunt deer.
Pheasant, I enjoy how active it is. I get a bit bored in the tree stand all day. Wild hog is on the list for sure.

Not that anyone asked, but got done with SJU visit #2 with my oldest Sunday. Prospect camp, we did a Jr Day visit earlier this Spring. Both Dumo and Heckendorf were really great, as much as I'd like to still believe all Johnnies are horrible degenerates. 8-)  I will also say, your burgers are much better than Bethel's.  :o

Fun Spring so far, next few weeks will be interesting with NDSU and UWRF Mega Camp on deck. Hoping to get the camps done early so we can enjoy summer and prep for Sr season. It's crazy how much pressure is on these kids to go to every camp under the sun. Very different from when we old farts did this process.

It is crazy.  Duff Jr will be a freshman this year, and we had a high school football meeting a few weeks ago.  They had a 20 minute presentation on college recruiting.  Not to mention the offseason workout expectations.  Much different than my late-90's experiences.

Working at a middle school I've heard about kids currently practicing / playing on teams and having games this spring / summer. I've also had kids as young as 7th grade tell me their teams play in "football tournaments" and play as many as 3 games in day (that's insane  :o #IMO)

My guess would be those are 7v7 related tournaments. There are Winter and Spring leagues for 18U and 16U, and even summer leagues for middle school aged.

I worked with our HS HC to setup an 18U team for Mounds View. My son did a competitive travel one last year after his Soph fb season. But this year with varsity basketball, it was too much to try to do tournaments all over kingdom come. Part of our strategy was that it was better to have our skill guys running our scheme all off-season rather than some frankenstein 7v7 O & D. The skill building stuff was good the first year. But if you do a winter or spring sport, it's impossible to travel to even Fargo or Des Moines for tourney's, much less TX or CA or AZ when you've got a basketball/baseball game on Friday night and 7v7 games on Saturday morning.

We weren't the only ones who took this approach. We competed against teams from Maple Grove, East Ridge, Orono, Forest Lake, St. Thomas Academy, Centennial, etc.

Texas Ole

7v7 has really gone crazy in Texas.  There are state tournaments.  While the HS coach can't be on the field or coaching the kids they are definitely running some of the plays and schemes from their 11v11 playbook.  Some of the coaches for 7v7 probably aren't household names in MN, but in Texas most people recognize them pretty quickly.  The coach at my old HS has called it a game changer when working with the QBs.  There is also a push to make women's 7v7 a state sanctioned sport.

When I was in HS it seemed everyone ran the wishbone or a variation of it.  Now it is all these spread the field and air it out offenses.  I am a huge TCU fan.  Coach Gary Patterson used to use the wishbone to teach defenders how to defend the spreads.  He fought these pass happy offenses for years, but finally relented.  Now Sonny Dykes who was one of the original air raid guys seems to be moving away from it.

So, what's the consensus on the "Brendan Sorsby ruling". Is this as straight forward as it seems? What's the scuttlebutt?

If the "straight forward" part is "it's completely crazy and makes 0 sense" then yes, I'm on the train. He should 100% not be allowed to take the field.

The NCAA has a lot of rules, but the one rule that it just straight up will not let you break is gambling, it's like the absolute 1 thing you can't do, and dude did it - a lot. And while some kind of sickness could be what compelled him to do it over and over, he did something wrong, and he has to live with the consequences of that action - which should be not to play.

I hope no one chooses to play Texas Tech all season. If they're going to be that selfish, they deserve not to have any games. Try winning a natty without winning a single game on the field.

It's just a bonkers ruling, and frankly a bonkers verdict by a judge, but that's the way it is in this era of college sports.
