I wasn't going to bring up the JeffP-George Carlin comparison because I didn't think I could do it without mentioning the two dozen Grinnell Phone books again and that didn't go over so well the first few times.  But, in short, I do agree.

April, this is going to hurt me more than it hurts you, but I have to smite you for not knowing who George Carlin is.

I should smite everyone else for only remembering the Seven Words You Can't Say on TV bit from his best album Class Clown.  How can you forget such immortal bits as the Artificial Fart Under the Arm, or Fake Vomit and Fake Dog Poo.  If anyone was raised Catholic they could never forget the confession bits.

I don't think they were allowed to watch/read George Carlin at Wheaton.
Yeah. I can see that. He's an atheist.
Lol... what exactly do you think our philosophy and world religions departments study exactly? Not to mention our science and english departments?

Lol... uhm... well, I know what George Carlin looks like.. he recently performed at one of the casinos at a member tribe, and he was on a local billboard for that reason for a long long time. But I had no idea if he was a singer or comedian.  ??? I read works by Carl Sagan though... I'd say he's about as atheistic as you can get!  :D

It's actually sorta nice to know why I get smited. This system irks me a lot more than it should... I am embarassed to admit that I notice, but I always do. People do it constantly, and I always look back at my recent posts and think, what could I possibly have done to offend people? I don't like to come of as rude or arrogant or wrong. Yeah it's just a message board, but it makes me wonder about things I do in real life that would make people want to "smite" me (though obviously they wouldn't thanks to social norms, leaving my totally oblivious to my negative traits).  :-[

I have no problem being smited over a pop culture reference.... it's just who I am. I am probably not as naiive as people think I am, but the ways that I am are maintained consciously, and by deliberate choice. Not necessarly by moral choice either, a lot of the time I simply find the stuff boring. If it had been a lit reference, or a classical composer or artist, or a science or history reference, I'd be hopelessly embarassed. I am NOT the norm for Wheaton though, especially lately. I wish I was, but I definitely am not.  :-\

That the kernel of a great idea, DHF! We need a karma counter following us around in the real world. That way you know to avoid the low karma people becuase they've hacked off other folks.

Wasn't the Jodie Foster flick, Contact, based on a work by Sagan?  That movie had some serious "faith in God" undertones, especially the last ten-fifteen minutes.  Then again, it was a movie, they could have just changed the script and forever ruined Sagan's rep for the non-reading movie-going public.

Is Grotberg going to Iowa State next year ?

hjmphelp

proudofLU-
Where'd that come from? there is a better chance of George Carlin going there!

diehardfan

Yes, contact is Carl Sagan's only fictional work. As far as the other question, how do I put it... mmm... I think Carl Sagan thinks of science as God? Something like that.

But if by God one means the set of physical laws that govern the universe, then clearly there is such a God. This God is emotionally unsatisfying... it does not make much sense to pray to the law of gravity. -Carl Sagan

Personally, If I were to pick a law to pray to, it would be the Strong Nuclear Force. I'm a big fan of all my components not flying apart despite protons logical tendancy to repel eachother.  :D

Seriously though, he's definintely against organized religion, and his beliefs couldn't really classify him as a deist. Possibly an agnostic thanks to scientific logic type stuff, but from what I've read of him, in his heart he's an atheist. I've always thought the point of the preacher in Contact was to make fun of religious folk.

Actually, I don't believe Sagan WAS an athiest but he was very MUCH against organized religion... as was Jesus. Read JC's words very carefully.

I remember Sagan having problems with the definition of God, especially when one sect tries to define away the right of another to attempt definition-and also especially when it deals with the relationship of God to science and the possibility of life not from this earth.

I don't think  Sagan or Jesus are planning to transfer to ISU either, although both could probably start at point guard next year. ;D :D ;D

Cool! Now I have a new reason to explain away my middle age spread...my Strong Nuclear Force ain't what it used to be, and the protons are simply repelling each other more than they used to when I was 20.

It wasn't the preacher I was referring to, but the speech Jodie Foster gave at the end of the movie before some Senate committee or something.  I liked the movie, but it was impossbily long and I haven't been able to make myself watch it again.  I just remember that final speech being pretty pro-God, which I didn't expect.

Wrong Iowa D1, but its probably not going to happen now that all the big name schools were smart enough to avoid hiring Alford.

So is this inside information that Stimson is coming out early?
