This much-anticipated season started off with high spirits for the Carthage program-- ranked about preseason #6

Fifth.

As far as I know, Carthage now holds the dubious record of being the highest-ranked team in a d3hoops.com preseason poll to fail to make the D3 tournament that subsequent March. Of course, IWU can break that record if it doesn't win two games this coming weekend, since the Titans were #4 in the preseason poll last fall.

(I'm not 100% sure on the status of this record. I know that one season in the middle of the last decade UW-Oshkosh was ranked fairly high in the preseason poll and failed to make the tourney. The Top 25 poll archives aren't online on d3hoops.com yet after Pat's format switch.)

Quote from: ball on February 23, 2011, 10:09:17 AMI am studying at Des Moines University's College of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery. There are 9 podiatry programs in the USA, and each year there is a big basketball tournament. Next year, Barry University in Miami is hosting-- I am sad that Steve D did not focus on natural science coursework and pursue podiatry as it would be fun to see him make some noise here.

Steve is pretty well-versed in the subject of podiatry, as he was plagued by plantar fascitis all season and will have to have surgery on his foot now that his season is over.

Well, let's see ... we could say that Millikin is the new North Park because it's the only CCIW school that's never won a single national championship in any sport ... oh, wait! That's not North Park! That's Carthage! Gues you'll have to keep working at it, eh? ;)

Greg,

Your absolutely correct when you said Robert Brown was one of the best that ever played in the CCIW, The defense employed by IWU on that March night in 1990 was a box in one on Robert Brown, not Mike Roy. The problem was Mike Roy had his worst shooting night in the 2 years he played for the Cardinals. Coach Bridges and his staff did not want Robert to take over the game as he did the previous two games that year! Even when the Cardinals started out with the first 10 points of the game, IWU never came out of the Box in One!

Thanks, CCIW ALUM. That makes a lot more sense.

I'll take Mike Barach.  According to an NPC lurker, I should take Mike Thomas too, but I never saw him play.

I'm not good at remembering things, but I think Oshkosh was ranked #2 in the preseason.  I always get my seasons mixed up, but Lawrence topped them at The Alex in one of the first games of the season.  It might have also been the year LU went undefeated in the regular season because I almost picked LU but didn't because of that Oshkosh game at the biginning of the season.  But like I said, I tend to mix my seasons together.

Re:  Fantasy league

With so many posters, surprised you guys don't have a league.  We have a 7-team league in the WIAC and its a lot of fun.

Thanks for the correction! My memory had the box and 1 correct but not the right guard...I assumed coach bridges wanted to take away Roy's shooting...thanks again for the refresher CCIW!

I knew that UWO had been high one preseason. If it was as high as #2, it takes Carthage (and possibly IWU) off the hook, in a sense.

CCIW Chat was the first room to have its own fantasy league. That was back in the early part of the last decade, and it included such posters as myself, Bob Quillman (Titan Q), April Lee, NPC-Alum (Ron Swanson), former CCIW Most Outstanding Player Ryan Knuppel of Elmhurst, Kenosha Mark, and a few others. We did it for three years, I think. As I recall, we limited it to CCIW games only rather than including non-conference contests.

P.S. Get off the computer and get some sleep, Tom. You're gonna need it!

Re: Oshkosh - my memory is also that they were #2.  (That collapse has been mentioned a number of times when discussing polls.)

Re: Fantasy League - jeesh, I've been reduced to 'some others'! ::)  I was a late-comer (only participated the last season it was done).  I had first overall pick, with April second - I knew she would never forgive me if I took Kent Raymond, so I took Zach Freeman (so it must have been 2007).  That, alas, was my only good pick - he out-pointed even Raymond and provided something like 60% of my points!  He single-handedly kept me about middle-of-the-pack instead of dead last. :D

Yeah, I remember April doing that and forgot to mention that.  She had her own webpage and everything.  For the record, I didn't get the idea from her, just my own obsession with fantasy sports!

Greg, I'm getting plenty of sleep!  About 4 hours last night! LOL.

Real nice, Greg.  It was a by-invitation-only league - rub it in that I wasn't initially invited! :'(

You were the Keith Moon of the CCIW Chat Fantasy League, Chuck. He was never formally invited to join The Who, either. He simply showed up for a tryout to replace the band's previous drummer, broke the previous drummer's drumkit in the process, and then Pete Townshend told him where the band's next gig was going to be. For years Moon joked about not being an "official member" of the band.

So if Augie wins the CCIW Tourney,  do you think the CCIW gets only 1 team into the tournament?

Alas, yes.  I don't think any other teams would even be on the bubble for a C.

Now, that won't happen - NCC will win the tourney unless IWU shooters shoot the lights out. Other than that, its NCC to win the Conference Championship.

It's more like, "Augie Who"?

Agree
Rule of thumb pretty much is 6 or fewer losses and sitting in #1 or #2 spot in final regional ranking to get in as a Pool C.  Even with a loss CCIW tournament, Augustana would likely be in as a Pool C.

The only other team in the first three regional rankings is IWU which would need a lot of luck to make it as a Pool C.  That luck means many bad things have to happen to others currently ranked by the NCAA in their Midwest Region.  I just don't see North Central or Wheaton having any chance as a Pool C --- too many losses.

But, should the CCIW get lucky and get two or more in we will all take it regardless of which team get in!!!
