I forgot to mention last night that Tom Slyder changed the usual NPU starting lineup, which I noted in my pregame talk. Joe Biko started in place of Michael Hutchinson, which I speculated in the pregame might've been some sort of tactical coaching maneuver. As it turned out, Hutchinson has the flu and hadn't practiced, and the coach didn't start him because he wasn't sure how much or how well Hutchinson could play. While Hutch's performance isn't going to make anybody forget what Michael Jordan did in the NBA finals against Utah, his 15 points in 23 minutes of action is certainly worth noting on CCIW Chat under the circumstances.

I will watch Jordy Nelson score 6 at a time rather than Jordan Nelson score 3.  ;)

Maybe Jordan can also develop the Shirk Shuffle to compete with the Jordy's Lambeau Leap?

Anyone have a score or a REPORT  from the IWU game in Memphis going on now?  I can't seem to get a video or a WJBC feed on the game.  A frustration.

You are getting blasted 50-33 early in the second half.  There may be a video there too but I did not try it.

Yup, thanks, Apple.  Seems Rhodes, the host school, has a paywall for their video stream.  $8 bucks to watch my Titans.  Hmmm.

Thanks for the score -- however upside down it may be.  Trevor Seibring with 15 first half points, lots of treys again too, it would appear.

live stats no charge - save the $8. Titans up by 21 8:13 remaining in game

From what I can see, IWU wins 91-71 in Memphis.

Titans playing very well now.

Seibring 21 and 10
Dolan 17
Coyle 14
Several with 9

Good bench contributions from Pennington, Stempel and Bausch.  Marietti and Nelson sitting.  Depth playing a big big part in the Titans early success.

Seibring continues to impress.  If the Titans continue to get this kind of contribution, scoring from the 4 and 5,  and with all their talented perimeter players, they are going to be very tough to defend.

It was nice to see two IWU games in person this weekend in Memphis.  A few observations on the Titans...

* 6-8 sophomore C Trevor Seibring (11.3 ppg, 7.5 rpg, .578 FG) is a good player.  No one individual part of his game necessarily jumps out at you, but he seems to do everything well.  Seibring is big kid with a lot of basketball smarts and a really strong set of fundamental big man skills.  Seibring is way ahead of where I would have guessed he'd be as a sophomore.

* When IWU gets 6-8 C Mike Marietti back (broken thumb), the Titans will be really good at the 5 for 40 minutes per game.  IWU has a big competitive advantage against most D3 teams in having two centers as good as Seibring and Marietti.

* 6-6 junior forward Ryan Coyle (12.2 ppg, 5.2 rpg) is a talented player who can do a lot of things from the 4 spot - he has a good back-to-the-basket game and can finish with either hand around the basket.  He is also a good shooter from the mid-range, beyond the arc, and FT line.

* 6-3 senior PG Dylan Overstreet (10.5 ppg, 5.7 rpg, 6.0 apg) is a terrific point guard.  He is a pure floor general type, but his size and offensive skills makes him so much more than that.  He manages the game from that PG spot incredibly well.  Overstreet is an all-American caliber point guard.

* 6-0 junior SG Bryce Dolan has really become a player.  He is 21-40 (.525) from 3-point range through 6 games, and averaging 13.7 ppg.  Dolan gives IWU a player who the opposing defense can never leave - he really stretches the floor for the Titans.

* IWU has a good collection of role players who come off the bench - Andy Stempel, Alec Bausch, and Joel Pennington in particular are really solid players.

* The Titans are hard to defend because of, 1) how well they move the basketball (this is a great passing team), and 2) the inside/outside balance.  IWU is averaging 83.2 ppg through 6 games.

When the Titans get Jordan Nelson (strep throat) and Mike Marietti (thumb) back, this team can definitely compete for the CCIW title.  The Titans have a chance to be very good -- lots of talent and just not many holes/weaknesses once those two key players come back.

IWU faces its toughest tests of the season to date in the next two games -- vs Chicago and at Wash U.  The Maroons and Bears should both be near the top of the UAA standings at the end of the season.  Important games for all 3 teams.

That's a nice win over UWSP by the Cardinals.

Point just isn't very good right now and I don't think they'll contend for a WIAC title this year.  Maybe you think it's a good win because it's against the WIAC or because it's Stevens Point. But as AndOne mentioned,  Point is nothing like last year's team. Even in their wins, they struggled against middle-of-the-pack teams from average conferences in St. John's and Edgewood (OT win).

Off the top of my head, I compare this team with the team after Point's second of B2B National Championships. That year they lost Kalsow, Bennett and Maus. Jon Krull was left to man the fort. They ended up 17-10 that year. This year, it's Joe Ritchay's job to man that fort. I'm anticipating another year similar to 2005-2006. Unless Ryf and Richard can contribute consistently and someone besides Ritchay can create shots (Pelkofer?), it's going to be a long year.

Good assessment, Q.  I share your views.  Especially on Seibring and Dolan.  And you didn't even mention Sodemann, a two year + starter who is always solid, can shoot the 3, just needs to get going and find his full game legs.  Perhaps a bit out of shape to start out the season.  He's off to a slow start this year, but when it all comes 'round, I'd bet Sodemann will also be making some key contributions.

A good weekend of basketball for the TITANS.

Greek Tragedy

On second thought,  Greg, I will give NCC credit for a "nice win" over Point. It was against a historically quality opponent on the road. Quandt is a tough place for visitors to leave with a win, but I do stand by my statement that this year's edition is not very good.  >:(  :)

Anytime you are a still evolving team that is continuing to see where the puzzle pieces, many of them new, best fit in order to fully establish the rotation, and you go on a 4 hour bus ride to play at a nationally ranked opponent and come away with a W, it's a "nice win." Point may not be as good as last year, especially not having 2 stars, but NCC also lost considerable star power.  And, UWSP still has talent, and in this case also had the advantage of home court in a historically tough place to play.  ;)
