Yeshiva got screwed. That was not a kicked ball with 4.2 secs left.

Not even close.

I said "Ball don't lie" when they got the steal off the ensuing inbounds, but I'm really curious what was said to draw the T there.

The CCIW came ohsoveryclose to suffering its second loss of the day to an opponent with a losing record, but Yeshiva's Or Sundjyvsky did Illinois Wesleyan a big solid by committing a self-destructive technical foul with 1.6 seconds left, turning what would've been an almost sure YU win -- Sundjyvsky had been fouled hard by Karlo Colak going to the rim after stealing the ball at midcourt following the inbound after the highly-questionable kicked-ball call -- into a loss, as Casen Lawrence made both tech FTs and Sundjyvsky made the first of his personal-foul FTs at the other end but missed the second for a 72-71 final in favor of the Greenies. Mason Funk led the way with 20 and 7 for IWU, Lawrence contributed 14, Noah Cleveland had 12 and 16, Colak pumped in 11 and had a nice 5:0 floor game, and Brady Kuehl added 10 off the bench.

The Titans, as expected, crushed Yeshiva on the boards -- but they were sliced and diced by the Maccabees on countless backdoor cuts. Yeshiva, in turn, threw the ball away a ton; just a whole bunch of unforced turnovers by the hosts in a matchup where they really couldn't afford careless ball protection.

Two kudos: First, Yeshiva's production quality is outstanding. Multiple cameras in a tiny gym make for an outstanding viewing experience, and the YU production crew is obviously very experienced and adept at cutting back and forth to give the best angles. Second kudo goes to Noah Cleveland, who for some reason was interviewed by the Yeshiva sideline reporter after the intense conclusion of a game in which there was obviously some bad feelings (not between the players or the coaches but between the Maccabees folks and the officials). Cleveland was very diplomatic and had the good sense to refuse to talk about the end of the game.

Whatever it was, Sundjyvsky should've said it in Hebrew instead of English. I always tell North Park's international soccer players that if they're going to say something uncouth within earshot of a ref, say it in Swedish or Norwegian. ;)

I agree, Yeshiva got screwed with the bad call on the "kicked ball."  It wasn't.   Bad way to end the game with the T, missing a FT.  Bad feelings all 'round.  IWU lucky to escape with a W. Tense situation at the end, with the player who missed the FT going out on the court toward the referees at the end, some others restraining him.  Too bad it ended that way, the officials largely determining who won the game and making bad calls.  There were others earlier too.

Aww, Mark, I had my fingers crossed that you were going to try to spell "Sundjyvsky". ;D

Yes, Greg, you are right on that name . . . I would have had to go look it up before posting.  I'm having enough trouble with several names on the IWU women's team!

Tense at the end there.  Sad way to end a very competitive game.  IWU continues to shoot the 3 poorly and make silly mistakes, like that inbound pass at the end of the game.  Yeshiva shot themselves in the foot with that T.  Yeshiva was much stronger, better than I anticipated, likely helped by home court.

IWU just doesn't seem to have it all together yet this year, with a range of starting lineups and rotations.   I don't think they are getting much from Boldt and Lawrence has been inconsistent.  Cleveland and Funk impressive so far.  Of the teams in the CCIW I've seen to date, I'd put IWU in the middle of the pack so far this season.

Greg, "Kobylarczyk" right?  :)

Happy New Year to all the CCIW chatsters.

Here comes 2026, ready or not.

Nice!

Someday soon you might finally be ready to tackle "Koschnitzky". ;)

Quote from: Gregory Sager on December 29, 2025, 07:06:16 PMWow. North Central quickly expanded a 10-point halftime lead over Lake Forest to 20 six minutes into the second half at the Loras tourney, and was still up by 18 at 79-61 with seven minutes remaining -- and then the roof completely caved in on the Cardinals. A combination of bad shooting and an inability to handle LFC's press (an inability which intensified as the Foresters grew closer) by NCC resulted in a massive Foresters run that allowed the boys from the North Shore to catch and pass the Cardinals at the 1:17 mark. And it only got worse from there for Vince Kmiec & Co., as the Foresters closed it out at the FT line and pulled off an improbable 92-87 win in which Lake Forest outscored the Cardinals 31-8 over that final seven minutes. Can't point the finger at Sean Molloy, as his 18 points led the way for NCC and included seven of the eight points that NCC scored during the late collapse. Ethan Marlowe had 14 and 8, Ale Diaz scored a dozen, and Tyler Surin added 10 in the losing effort for North Central, which drops to 4-7 going into tomorrow's non-con finale against Bethany Lutheran out there in Dubuque.

Inexplicable 🤬

Took in the Carthage matinee game today.  Carthage ended up blowing out Benedictine, 100 to 60.  The difference was only 11 with 15 minutes to go, but then Carthage finally put the hammer down and Benedictine couldn't make a shot.

Brooks led Carthage with 22 points and 4 steals (3 dunks off the steals). AJ Johnson with 19 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists.  AJ got hot for like a 2 minutes stretch and I think he scored on four straight possessions.  Chris Schlesinger with another all around game with 11 points, 4 assists and 4 rebounds.  Daun with 10 rebounds as well.  Ryan Johnson did score 11 and pulled down 8 boards, but he still isn't that dominant player I expected.  I brought this up the last time I saw the game live, he just can't finish around the rim.  He draws the fouls, but he should be converting layups, with his size. He only went 5 for 9 at the line too.

Not trying to be too hard on him, but I expect so much more from an All-American player, as he was projected to be this year. Just not the same player I saw last year.  Brooks is by far the best player on this team.  Good shooter and so athletic and bouncy.

The key player in my mind is going to be Chris Schlesinger.  He gives them so much energy off the bench and really fills up the box score. Can score from outside, but likes to get to the rim too.  If Carthage can win the league, he will be a big part of it.  Still not convinced how good they will be.  I really thought with the whole team coming back, they would really impress and from my vantage point, they haven't.

Now that the conference season is starting, I will look to reserve judgement.  Need more from a few of the players to convince me though.  A 40 point win looks good, but they need to play like they did for the last 15 minutes to get my attention.
