For comparison, here is what Hope will be losing (basically 3 guys plus the 1/2 game before Venema was injured):

40.0% of the minutes played
36.0% of the teams rebounds
33.9% of the teams blocks
44.2% of the teams points

The biggest hit from graduation is losing pretty much 2/3's of their 3 point attempts and 3 point shots made.

Hope has no one returning that has taken 100 3's in a season, and only 2 that shot over 50.

Priority #1 besides the annual priority of finding size will be to find some 3 point shooting.

What is Calvin losing from the 2010-11 team?
4 players.  Rodts, Schnyders, Schuster, and Salo.

These 4 players accounted for 92.7 minutes per ave. game or 46% of p.t.
These 4 players ave. 16 rebounds/g or 40% of team total.
These 4 players made 60 blocks 52% of team total.
These 4 players average 35.4 pt/g or 48% of team total.

Do we know what players will be coming in to replace those minutes?  Some will be from underclassman from this year's team or JV team, but do you know of any High School Seniors who are targeting Calvin for their college career?

Just looking at the known players:

The nucleus of the team will be the 10 returning players (assuming all 10 on this years roster return) which features 4 guards, 4 forwards, and 2 post/forward players.

Probable starters (my guess) are Snikkers, Powell, Brink, Kruis and Haverdink.  Haverdink is probably the most likely to get bumped.

De Young spells Kruis in the post.  De Boer and Vallie spell the forwards, and Reitema and Fabiyi spell at guard.  This pretty much covers the issue of filling the 200 minutes.

One can guess which of the jv's get moved up.

Like Ziggy I don't see this as a woe is Calvin scenario, but sure would like to see another Honderd or one of those Veenstra kids on campus. :)

Looking beyond the numbers I see Calvin also losing a leader in Trent Salo.  The guy had a great work ethic in the weight room, was encouraging, was the only one I ever saw clapping his hands and yelling inspiration on defense, etc.  He helped to calm his teammates down and focus when things would get a bit chippy (like the last Trine game, a classic senior leadership moment for Trent). Even when he only had the use of one leg he would be the first off the bench during a timeout to hop over and encourage his teammates.  In my opinion this type of spark is important to have in a leader, and ideally aspects are seen in the others on the team as well.

Brad Schnyders also provided this type of spirit on the team.  Just when it felt like the offense was stagnant, here comes Brad to force the action and make something happen.  Great hustle on defense and the boards as well.  Sometimes he could make us cringe but we could never question his effort.

Who is going to step up and fill those holes in 2011-12?  If a true "spiritual leader" can emerge on the Knights, this team has the potential to be something special.  If no one does, and the team goes through the motions and relies on natural talent alone, we could ho hum our way to another non-NCAA berth season.   I see Tommy as a player who has some of these attributes already, and needs to develop some of the other areas.  It would also be interesting to see how Jordan Brink develops in this area now that he has his freshman year behind him.  The point guard spot is a natural position for a "leader" and he seems to have the steady confidence already.

Kind of off topic, but Cornerstone and Davenport, two opponents that Calvin and Hope played in their pre-conference schedule, both made the NAIA elite 8 by winning today.  They both play again tomorrow.

If I read the brackets correctly, and these two schools keep winning they will meet in the finals. Maybe they can return to Grand Rapids for that game and play it at Van Noord Arena. Calvin's campus is almost precisely halfway between Cornerstone and DU, would be a perfectly neutral site, and would generate a fair bit of local interest.

That'd definitely seem like the thing to do.  I know NAIA always plays out their tournament in just one location for the whole 32 team tournament, though, and they do it all in one week.

I would say I don't think they'll meet, but Davenport has a favorable match-up tomorrow, Cornerstone will be favored tomorrow.

Knightmare

I saw it briefly mentioned a page or so back but what high school players have MIAA coaches been following the closest in the tourney if you know what I mean  ;D.  Any rumblings on Calvin?  Will also be very interesting to see what Matt Neil does with his first recruiting class at Hope after a strong first season.

Davenport's opponent St. Francis is an odd team, at one point this year they were in the top 5 of NAIA II and beat #2 Northwood in OT, and lost to #3 Cornerstone in OT.  But they finished the regular season with 3 straight losses and stumbled home just 6-5 in their last 11.  Then put it together again and won the  MCC Tournament.

While Davenport is the higher seed at #12, I think St. Francis might be a deceptive #13 seed.  With only a couple Sr's on the roster, this might be a test run for an even deeper run for Davenport next year.  They should be really good again.

No matter what happens the rest of the way, its been a really great year for our NAIA neighbors.

But, hopefully, Peter Bunn will be back, and he's a fine 3-point shooter.
