Calvin fans have identified LeRoy's current college as both "Whitford" and "Whitman." (Bradley and Dick?) It is, of course, Whitworth. And while I can't imagine he'll stick his nose in this football business, I can tell you what his position is on athletics. A college, he has said, ought to be excellent at everything it does. It ought to be as good in the classroom as it is on the playing field (these were opening remarks). I have no doubt but that he will push for this with Calvin's athletic programs.

+k for the Dick Whitman reference.

I find it somewhat surprising that Calvin would select someone with a PC(USA) background.

(and FWIW, Whitworth has football)

I finally took some time to look at the various documents posted on Calvin's website and found that Dr. Le Roy's background includes the PC(USA) and the EPC.

Compare this, from the EPC's website:

QuoteWhen the EPC started in 1981 we determined that on the basic essentials of the Christian faith, we would not disagree, but on anything that was not essential, such as the issue of ordaining women as officers or practicing charismatic gifts, we would give each other liberty. Above all, we committed ourselves to loving each other and not engaging in quarrels and strife. The result is that when we get together in our regional and national meetings, we spend most of our time in worship and fellowship and almost none in arguing with each other.

With this, from the incomparable Peter De Vries:

QuoteThe Dutch Calvinists thrived on schisms, being themselves, of course, the product of many. They were hairsplitters the like of which an ordinary human being in our time is totally unlikely to hear. 'One Dutchman, a Christian; two Dutchmen, a congregation; three Dutchmen, heresy,' was the charge leveled at us by more Americanized people, who boasted, for instance, of belonging to denominations that hadn't had a schism in a hundred years. To these my dad had a ready reply: 'Rotten wood you can't split.' We multiplied by dividing. The very thought of a new sect in the wind thrilled our folk. In my adolescence, when flarings of more genuine revolt began, I said to my father one evening, on hearing that a splinter of a splinter had split off again and started another church around the corner, 'Instead of all this bickering and contention over nonessentials, why can't people emphasize the central truth on which all Christians can unite?' My father took his pipe out of his mouth and said, 'Stop talking like a crackpot.' After a screed on his pet subject, the Total Depravity of man, I exclaimed, 'Oh, come now, people aren't all that bad. Take you, for instance. you're a good sort. In fact, I think you're quite a nice guy.' He looked at me and said, 'You're wearing me thin.'

Tonight's game:

Adrian at Marygrove --  Marygrove is 6-9 on the season, they've come a long way as a program from their early days of being pretty horrible.  This may be the first time Marygrove has 'hosted' an MIAA squad.   Home games are played at the Ford Fieldhouse in Highland Park.  This year's Mustangs have a win over D3 Elmira, while Elmira is 0-8 and clearly not very good, it is at least noteworthy.

Adrian should win this game, which is why you schedule it on Dec 22 in the first place I suppose.  This is also Adrian's first game in 8 days and only the second since their Dec 3. beat down at the hands of Wooster, a good point to shake off some rust.  Speaking of rust, the Bulldogs have just one more game remaining before the MIAA schedule kicks off.  Dec 29 at Millikin.

Adrian has been playing football since the early 1900's, while that has has no bearing on a basketball game played over a century later it is still an interesting fact.

great win comets! i'm tellin ya, they'll be a threat to win some games in the miaa.

also, i'm watching finlandia/alma online and i'm impressed with how many alma fans made it out

That's only because you can't see the other bleachers in the "U" at the end and the side where the camera is. Both of those were EMPTY! Although the close side is hurting since that's where the "Maroon Monsoon" sets up shop and the kids are on break....

The Alma/Ithaca HS game was in Art Smith Arena Tuesday, and the turnout was nice. An estimated 1000-1200 people. The "U" at the end was being used by Alma as their student section, it was kind of fun to see that. But boy, that arena gets loud when it's filled, that's for sure!

yeah, when i saw that the attendance was only 137, i assumed that i could see every fan, all sitting on the far side. but still, i hope to see some good crowds there when students come back from break and they're putting up fights in the miaa

Adrian 76  Marygrove 62

Neither team shot particularly well in this one, both were dreadful from the FT line.  Adrian out-rebounded Marygrove by about 15 and Marygrove had 36 rebounds......there were a lot of missed shots to go around.

Richaud Pack 24, Sean Gallant 21, Brad Whitby 12

If the name Richaud Pack is unfamiliar to you.........Richaud is a transfer from Florida International University via Birmingham Seaholm HS.  He played in about 10 games for them last year.

his bio from FIU.   http://www.fiusports.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=11700&ATCLID=205020716

Interesting mid-season pickup for the Bulldogs.......commence D1 transfer outrage in 3....2....no?

edit--adjusted score to reflect the actual score

SBell

Last year? He played against Dayton last week!

Was the state's leading scorer his senior year at Seaholm.

It should be some fun games. There's been a couple really good student turnouts so far (nothing like Hope and Calvin, but noteworthy). There's a really cool SAAC program this year too to get other student athletes in seats for other games....

Calvin is averaging 873 fans a game (high attendance was 1756 for Grace Bible), so you're closer than you think.

If Calvin can shake the rust off after a two week break from action, they should be able to stay with both teams on the West coast this week.  I expect a win over Whitworth but Whitman is too hard to call.  The Pirates appear to be overrated and the Missionaries seem to lack the respect they deserve.  Both games will be a good test and preparation for league play.
