Watched a new era of Calvin Knights hoops Thursday evening with Calvin losing 83-77 to the Ferris State Bulldogs in Big Rapids. The Bulldogs started their own new era last night, as this exhibition game was the debut of their new head coach, Brooks Miller, who formerly led Trine University to a national championship in D3. KnightSlappy's parents were at Jim Wink Arena but KS failed to attend, apparently claiming more pressing family matters.

Despite a plethora of new and unfamiliar names and faces on the Calvin roster, I was rather heartened to see the Knights were able to make a serious and competitive game of it against a team that appeared bigger, quicker and more athletic than their D3 opponent. Calvin led early but trailed 37-33 at the break following a last second three pointer by Ferris.

Parker Swartz played well, leading Calvin with 24, while Jordan Scott added 16 and Justin McILLwain 12. Guard Jonny Ingalls, a sophomore transfer from NMU, impressed me with his hustle and grit on both sides of the ball, and he tallied 11 points. I think that kid is going to play a lot this season.

The highly anticipated debut (by me anyway) of 6'7" Freshmen Owen VanderWaal who otherwise would have started, didn't happen. Owen suffered a blow to the face in practice this week that required 7 stiches. I think he will be back next week. The Knights are clearly a work in progress, but I was pleased to see that after getting behind by 17 early in the second half, that Calvin never quit and got the lead down to four on several possessions in the final five minutes of play.

Not to be nitpicky, but it might be better to say "28th most vote points" or something to that effect.  It's not really 28th place, for that to happen, we'd have to have voted for at least 28 positions.  There's no way to account for votes that would've been cast if given the option.  Just trying to be accurate - Olivet really isn't in 28th position.

I am led to understand that Calvin will host D2 Northwood on Thursday, Oct 29 Friday, Oct 30 at 5pm, but I don't know if it will be an exhibition game or a scrimmage.

I will endeavor to report my attendance to oldknight.

and to nitpick even further, you could argue that this can also affect teams INSIDE the top 25, basically whenever we reach a team that wasn't on every ballot.

Which, in a preseason poll, is like #6.

But then you are completely nitpick ;D  The reality is that while everything you say is true - nearly every fan out there looks at the order of the teams, and using a number to indicate where they fall makes sense.

Double nitpicky  ;D - the reality is that no one actually cares about that, what they are curious to know is where each team stands relative to the others in the voting - that is all that was being shared.

I believe this Exhibition is Friday and have corrected the above post.
