Quote from: oldknight on January 31, 2026, 04:57:47 PMAlbion beats Calvin 73-69 as the Knights go 5-24 from the arc for the second straight game. Tough to win when you do that, particularly when your opponent hits 8 of 16.
Tell me if I'm wrong, OldKnight, but my reading of Calvin v Hope matchups has been that, when posting up, Overway requires Hope to double him . . . which means someone is free on the perimeter. If those perimeter shots fall, then I can't see Hope (or hardly anyone) defeating Calvin. If they don't, well today. . .

I think that about covers it.

Teams can leave Calvin's "shooters" open all day. No one on their roster makes teams hesitate to double team.

Honestly, you have to double team him.

Hope 85 Adrian 75

This game was tied at 62 with 8 and change to play.  Nothing special to close it out though Hope went 14-16 from the stripe from this point and just 1 turnover after a very sloppy day overall.  Wourman and Yant did the heavy lifting but another pretty solid team effort.

Adrian played a pretty nice game, including a nice 2nd half comeback from 10+ down to take a brief lead, but sort of ran out of juice at the end missing to many big shots late and got pretty mauled on the glass.  Have to mention Seth Logan's 27 on a great day for him, probably kept Adrian in it most of the day.

Hope 75
Kalamazoo 62

Part of a night of chalk in MIAA.  The Hornets team I watched twice in the last couple of weeks vs Hope sure doesn't look like an 0-9 (MIAA) 3-17 team.

Soph Orion Yant is certainly bursting onto the scene for Hope.  In his Freshman year, he played in 3 games, recording 12 min, 3 reb, 2 blks, and 7 pts.

This season he played in 7 of the first 8 games, coming off the bench recording 51 min, 8 reb, 2 blks, and 22 pts.

Since entering the starting lineup on Dec 19, in 12 games he has 245 min, 79 reb, 12 blks, 129 pts, and recorded his first double-double.  Game avg as a starter is 10.8ppg, 6.6 rpg, 1bpg, and 20.4 min/g

Couple of 2026 recruits from X yesterday:

Milo Barangan - Mona Shores (MI) - 6-5 F will attend Calvin

Ben Mahendale - Brecksville Broadview Heights (OH) - 6-8 F/C will attend Hope

Calvin now has 5 known recruits - all very local (Grand Haven, Mona Shores, Hudsonville)

Hope now has 3 known recruits - all out of state (IN, OH, GA)

Current Standings

Hope 8-1
Olivet 8-1
Trine 7-2
Calvin 6-3
Albion 4-5
Alma 2-7
Adrian 1-8
Kalamazoo 0-9

If I use MAssey to predict all remaining games, you get this for final standings:

Hope 11-3
Trine 11-3
Calvin 11-3
Olivet 9-5
Albion 8-6
Alma 3-11
Adrian 2-12
Kalamazoo 1-13

Should it actaully end like this, 2 of the 11-3 teams get a bye, and the other plays Alma.

In this scenario, Calvin would be the 1-seed via 3-1 record vs. tied teams Trine and Hope, so I will accept this result.  ;D

Top 4 in the MIAA hold serve today:

Calvin 91 Kalamazoo 55
Hope 80 Alma 48
Olivet 71 Albion 57
Trine 71 Adrian 66

Hope 9-1
Olivet 9-1
Trine 8-2
Calvin 7-3

Next weeks games be will intense as all 4 play each other on Wednesday and Saturday.

Wednesday:  Hope at Trine & Calvin at Olivet
Saturday:  Olivet at Hope & Trine at Calvin

I'm not sure but it seems like it's been a while since we've seen 4 teams fighting for the regular season crown this late in the season.  This might be the deepest the MIAA has been in a while as Albion is really good too.

oldknight

Calvin with their second easy win of the week over one of the weaker teams in the MIAA, beating Kalamazoo 91-55. The game was never close. Of the Knights' 61 shots from the floor, they took an incredible 40 from the three point line, making 17 of them. I've seen a lot of Calvin basketball over the years, and I can't remember one of their teams shooting that many threes in a game.

sac

Not alot has changed here

+/-
Hope      9-1    +3
Olivet    9-1    +4
Trine    8-2    +3
Calvin    7-3    +2
Albion    4-6    -1
Alma      2-8    -3
Adrian    1-9    -4
Kalamazoo 0-10    -5

Really hard for Albion to be better than the 5th seed and a couple catastrophic losses to be worse than the 5, the 4 seed isn't going to like that pairing.

Last tournament spot Alma has the upper-hand here, and it might be as simple as just beating Adrian next  Saturday to sew up that spot.  Obviously any win by the 3 at the bottom over the other 5 is a big boost to their chances and winning tie-breakers.

I'm putting Kzoo on O-fer watch.  The MIAA hasn't had a team go O-fer the conference season since Alma in 2003.  Kzoo gets credit for having 4 straight vacated and thus winless MIAA seasons from 13 to 16 which I will always laugh about but those don't really count as O-fers.

Remaining games:
Adrian:  @Kzo, ALM, @Oli, ALB
Albion:  @Alm, KZO, HPE, @Adr
Alma:    ALB, @Adr, CAL, KZO
Calvin:  @Oli, TRN, @Alm, HPE
Hope:    @Trn, OLI, @Alb, @Cal
Kalamazoo:ADR, @Alb, TRN, @Alm
Olivet:  CAL, @Hpe, ADR, @Trn
Trine:    HPE, @Cal, @Kzo, OLI

Projecting out HOME = win, AWAY = Loss except  Hope, Olivet, Trine, Calvin, Albion win regardless of location vs Alma, Adrian, Kzoo

Trine    11-3
Hope    10-4
Olivet  10-4
Calvin  10-4
Albion  9-5
Alma    3-11
Adrian  2-12
Kzoo    1-13

Fun scenarios where Hope starts the week tied for 1st, finishes with a 2 game lead over everyone, or starts the week tied for 1st and ends the week 4th or something in between.

Subjective probably, but the MIAA had 6 double digit win teams a year ago but the conference race didn't play out as tight.  We'll only get 5  double-digit win teams this year unless Alma or Adrian go on a crazy run.

Generally I'd agree, but it was probably 2022.

Hope 9-1
Calvin 8-2
Trine 7-3
Albion 7-3

Hope went 4-0, Calvin 3-1, Trine 3-1, Albion 2-2 in the final 2 weeks.

sac

I was thinking tonight, it would probably be pretty hard to find a conference where its 4 top teams in the standings only separated by 2 games all play each other in the last two weeks like the MIAA has remaining.
