TGP- "But the kind of kid who would want to attend a school like RPI is probably the exact opposite of a kid who would go to a Hobart.  The schools are way too different - neither better nor worse - to really make a comparison.

How can you not make a comparison between the schools?
When they put together lists of the richest people in the world do they take into account one guy runs a computer bizznass, another is some price of Saudi Arabia, and the next is a pro golfer.

TGP...
Just read in today's paper...I am in the Rochester area...that H and WS just announced a new capital campaighn for I think $160 Million or so...

Since it is RPI-Hobart Weekend...lets put that into perspective...

RPI's currnet campaign is for almost ten times as much as that...$1.4 BILLION...

So...what can we determine from that...???

Since there is a formula used by development offices that will give you a percentage of funds that Alumni will likely give vs. governmental and crporate gifting, RPI ALUMNI GIVE ABOUT 10 TIMES AS MUCH MONEY TO THEIR ALMA MATER THAN HOBART ALUMS!!!

From that...Can we extrapulate the following...

1- RPI ALUMS HAVE 10 TIMES AS MUCH DISCRETIONARY FUNDS TO PLAY WITH....

2- RPI ALUMS MAKE 10 TIMES AS MUCH AS HOBART ALUMS...

3- RPI ALUMS CARE MORE ABOUT THE FUTURE OF EDUCATION IN OUR COUNTRY THAN A LIBERAL ARTS SCHOOL LIKE HOBART...

4- RPI ALUMS HAD A BETTER EXPERIENCE IN TROY THAN HOBART ALUMS HAD IN GENEVA....(OUCH THAT ONE WOULD HURT!!!)

5- RED IS A BETTER COLOR THAN ORANGE...

Ok...Ok....i will stop there...but the reality is, $1.4 Billion is a lot to raise and that kind of a number is usually only attempted by the Major Institutions( Michigan, Stanford, etc...) and Ivy's....

Just another indication of Rensselaer's stature vs. the rest of the Liberty League competition....not another school in the LL or even the Empire League comes close to the academic standards and average starting salaries of a Rensselaer grad...

Last I checked, the AVERAGE starting salary out of Rensselaer was right around $55,000 dollars across all of the majors....not a bad start for a 21 year old...and if you stick around for grad school it goes up very nicely...

Bottom line...If you are looking for a very competitive football program, with a great career potential upside....and a football program that is run by someone with a lot of integrity....YOU CAN'T GET ANY BETTER IN ALL OF NY STATE!!!!

Respectively submitted with all due respect to the Pumpkin Head Nation...

LETS GO RED!!!!!!

Not to suggest that anyone might employ statistics in a misleading way, a couple of points regarding the claim that, "Last I checked, the AVERAGE starting salary out of Rensselaer was right around $55,000 dollars across all of the majors."

-  Near as I can tell the only place that publishes starting salary statistics at RPI is the School of Engineering, and yes the average does appear to be around $55,000 for those graduates who report their starting salaries.  However, I have seen no such information on RPI grads from the schools of Architecture, Humanities & Social Sciences, Management, etc....and by the way, the most frequent major on the football team is management (including all 4 captains).

-  2nd point as I alluded to earlier, the average starting salaries are from those students who actually bother to report them to the school.  In my experience it would be difficult to get more than a 50% response rate on this type of information, and intuitively, the responses that you get will likely be from those grads that hooked up good jobs right out of school.

Having made those points, RPI is a wonderful academic institution and I predict that their Management majors will beat Hobart's ????? majors by a score of 42 - 35 in OT.

I never reported my salary to RPI, and I don't know if Reg did or not, but we were both Management majors, and we are both doing just dandy in the financial department.  And the RPI diploma does have pull, EVEN with a management major, strictly because of the schools reputation.  Maybe it's known for it's Engineering, but would a school so highly regarded for it's engineering and academics have lower standards in it's other majors?  I doubt it.  That's like Harvard having a Phys Ed offering.

Don't get me wrong - the 55k salary is impressive to an extent.  I know it's definitely more than what I made my first job out of school.

It's more than what I made at any point before the past 12 months.

Thought I'd share this bit with my LLPP brethren...maybe being a talk show host in Holland pays OK...

Make sure you read below BEFORE watching the video.
It's a real show in Holland... It's a video of a Dutch interviewer who is interviewing a man on a LIVE TV (Dutch version of 60 Minutes)on "surgeries gone wrong". This man had a surgical team inadvertently remove his testicles.
I think the interviewer could have handled the facts but it was the man's voice that appears to have set him off. Watch a veteran reporter's career go down the drain in about 30 seconds.
It doesn't need to be in English to understand what is happening...

I would expect nothing but excellence from all academic departments at RPI, and I would also note that one of RPI's football playing managment majors (Branche) is also an academic all-American.........although I have once again noted that RPI grads have this impulse to give you their resumes..........but why not?........they attended an outstanding school.

My only intention was to keep it real and point out that a narrowly defined set of statistics that applied to the Engineering Dept. was inadvertently associated with all of RPI which is not completely accurate.

Word up about who's "reporting" and who's not.

Speaking of reporting - that video was funny (albeit in a sick way - I mean, I feel TERRIBLE for High Pitch Sven).

How would you "inadvertantly" let someone remove your cojones?

'gro

This one's for LD, my FF advisor... but everyone feel free to chime in.

So it's 2 weeks into the season and owners are cutting heads already.  RB Thomas Jones and Keyshawn Johnson just got the ax from their respective owners.

Gro has already thought about pulling the plug on (worst 1st RD pick of all time) lamont jordan. Even with delhomme and the panthers playing like doo doo I'll probably make a run for keyshawn (and probably drop drew bennet), but should I drop jordan for jones or give jordan another chance?
Jordan has been demoted to RB #3 behind ronnie brown and chester taylor, and I still have mike bell as insurance.

'gro

here's the salary data from those who reported in 2005. about 500 BS degrees averaging $50,500.

It was funny my first day in grad school, no one down here in NC in the class had heard of RPI, except the Engineers.  And one kid is an Engineer from NC State, who has a pretty good Engineering program, I heard him say to someone else in the class, another of his NC State Alums, 'Yeah, as good as NC State's Engineering program is, RPI is about 100 times better.'  Kind of cool to hear from someone.

And honestly, I don't think anyone on this board should be bashfull when quoting their 'resume'.  All the schools are respectable.  If you can play football, get through college, and not be taking phys ed, it's an accomplishment no matter what.  And if you can get a job that isn't dealing drugs, or working at Chick-Fil-A, then nobody has anything to be ashamed of.  You could have a Hobart degree and be making a ****load of money, or have an RPI degree and be making $30K being someone's monkey, it's all what you do with it, and how you apply yourself after you get out.

It was funny, my first day in grad school all we did was sit around and tell engineer jokes:

http://www.successunlimited.co.uk/humour/engineer.htm

On a more serious note - RPI is no joke on the field or in the classroom.  Someday in the distant future it will certainly be on my kids list of schools to check out if they show any aptitude for the subjects their old man couldn't swing (math, science, etc).

Although, USC does have a pretty sweet engineering school and the weather is better......

Tlm -

Word up.  #1 best thing on the field at USC home and away games.

Definitely enjoyed the view from the student section at home games while TGP was in grad school in Uni Park.

Very well said, LD... That was one of the most profound things I've seen on these board!  Karma too you.

Oh and By the way, I wasn't a phys ed major  :P
