Dlip, liked your Blog piece on the Union 1989 Stagg Bowl team members. Must have been cool just to get to the Stagg Bowl. Hopefully Union can handle Western New England this week.

Thanks for the kind words Bartman! Actually former Union SID and diehard Dutchmen fan George Cuttita III is writing the pieces on former Dutchmen players. He is an awesome guy who has brought passion (and great ideas) to the blog.

dlip is pulling big time for the Pumpkinheads today! dlip wishes them all the luck in the world and really does believe they can win this game.

Here is dlip's write up for today's WNEU/Union game in Springfield, Massachusetts. If there was ever a time and need for a Union win this is it: www.dlipthedutchman.blogspot.com

OUCH ???. Worst first half offensive performance by Hobart in many years, and it was not only due to second string QB , but the Oline could not move Ithaca until the third quarter when it was too late. Ithaca defense is very good, no doubt, but much of this was self inflicted today. Hobart defense is also very strong, but had their backs up against the wall due to the 6 turnovers . Forget about national rankings, the Liberty League title has to be a week to week focus for this group of Statesman ....the defense cannot let up in any game from now on, because the offense  needs serious improvement to have a chance for another NCAA tournament appearance. After this Hobart loss and the St.Lawrence dominance of Endicott today, looks like the Canton Crew(as well as RPI and Rochester after victories today) should be smelling opportunity.
Good luck to Ithaca the rest of the season.

Was able to catch a couple games on the laptop again this weekend. Really impressed with Ithaca's broadcast, not many d3 streams have different camera angles and replays. As for the game, what was with the QB situation for Hobart? I'm sure i am missing something but did Sweeney get hurt early on or before the game? And Hobart's D was fantastic but man was their offense putrid. I just don't understand how Ithaca does it. Each year they are said to be taking a step back and yet they just win when they need too. Good game but now this is bad for the LL. Losses to Alfred, Ithaca, and Morrisville hurt, (all 3 on the road doesn't help either). I also saw some of SLU-Endicott and boy did the saints handle them with ease. Dewall is a good coach and i believe will get Endicott back to being a playoff team, but he is running Hobart's offense with a team not equipped for it. Endicott has a small O'line and talented WRs. They have traditionally run the spread and with Tom Blumenaur (WR/QB coach for SLU 2010-2014) as their OC last year, they averaged over 400 yards per game. At one point their QB was 3-17 and there was no attempt at 3 step, quick passes to get completions and build confidence for him.

Morrisville getting crushed by Utica in a result no one saw coming really hurts the League. I think if SLU were to play the mustangs again they would handle them, but that is the danger of playing a quality opponent in week 1, you are really playing against yourselves and hoping you have good health during camp.

Another thing was clear, and that is how much better the LL is than the other leagues in the Northeast. But the E8 and NJAC have distanced themselves a little bit more this season.

Props to WPI and Rochester for being 3-0, lets see who can keep on winning. RPI looks strong despite their rainy loss to Alfred. I still don't think anyone is beating SLU/Hobart but we will get to see some good games where teams will be fighting to the very end.

And still, what is going on in Union? I know there was some thoughts of the HBC leaving before this season. Can't help but think that may not be his choice soon.

1. Ithaca is one of the best communication schools in the country, and their productions reflect that.

2. The Bombers have a fantastic defensive coordinator, which allows them to get more from their defense than the individual parts may merit. They also have several standout pieces (CB Malik Morris, LB Kenneth Bradley). And their return units are always, always, always unbelievable.

Totally agree with the quality of the Ithaca broadcast......I was looking forward to it given the communications major reputation at Ithaca. They were also pretty objective reflecting a true journalistic approach. Do they broadcast road games...like next year in Geneva??
Although the sting of losing remains, we should congratulate the Statesman on the four year regular season win streak , this was truly exceptional and the coaching staff and the players should be proud of this accomplishment. The streak had to end at some point, and losing to a great program like Ithaca carries no shame(but still winless in Ithaca :() Hopefully the Statesmen can start a new regular season streak and maintain the Liberty League crown this year....it won't be easy as we cannot take anyone in the league lightly this year starting with Merchant Marine this weekend.  Liberty League football should be interesting this season.

Well said Bartman and dlip reiterates exactly what you are saying about how Bart deserves tons of credit for the remarkable run they had. Who knows, a new run may begin on Saturday for your beloved pumpkinheads within the LL possibly reaching into the NCAA's. If SLU hadn't received a colonoscopy against Morrisville dlip would say they are the clear favorites. Right now dlip believes the title is there for either one of them to take. Best of luck on the rest of the season!

If you think the radio guys are objective, you should listen to the halftime ICTV show.  Those guys sound like they like to root against the bombers.  That's besides the fact that none of them seem to know anything about the sport of football or the team they are supposedly trying to cover.

I think this is a bit unfair. I've listened to the radio guys, and I think they're critical where it's deserved and positive when that's warranted. I think it's possible they overcorrect at times, and in an effort to not sound like a homer, are too critical. However, I think a bigger problem in general (and this is not directed at you, Jonny) is that a lot of people think that the kids should be overwhelmingly supportive of the program and never critical. Do you recall specific examples that stuck with you?

Regarding their knowledge of the sport and team, I'd say two things: I do think, in general, a more broad knowledge of the program as a whole would serve them (and any broadcasters) well.

However, let's remember that these are students, who are trying to balance broadcasting these games with classes and whatever other extra curricular activities they're doing, and that they're still in the process of refining the skillsets they're being asked to display on the air. If they could do it without making mistakes, or having problems, they'd be professionals earning a paycheck, not 19-year olds forking over a small fortune to go to school.

I'm talking more about the Cortland game last year, where the hosts of the ICTV program were criticizing the Ithaca players, playcalling and basically expecting the team to do things that they haven't done all year, as if they hadn't even watched a game.  And I realized these guys are students, but I don't remember such a lack of knowledge of the sport when guys like Kevin Connors, Jamie Mather, John Meter-Perel, etc were doing the media in the 1990s.  You could tell those guys from the 1990s knew what they were talking about, and were going to make it to the next level.  I dunno, I just expected more professionalism from these guys.  As for them being busy students, I assume these guys want to make a career in sports broadcasting, so that is why I expect the best of the best.

I get where you are coming from, but for a dose of reality, please sign up and check out a Widener game on Livestream.  While the play by play guy is good, the rest is so bad, that I literally turn off the sound, bring up another game on my second screen, and keep up the sound on that one.  I was able to take in a few games this weekend, including the SJU/Concordia game, which makes me embarrassed about the WU broadcast...(it's also grainy with poor camerawork...)
That should very quickly put the IC broadcast and halftime show in perspective...
