Quote from: Jonny Utah on September 11, 2025, 01:09:36 PMOne of the issues I have always found is some inexperienced coaches tell kids to "learn" the playbook, before they assign the kid an acutall position.  Even worse is when the coach has the team stand around for 10 minutes explaining it verbally to a bunch of 8 year olds when none of the kids know exactly which position they will be playing.

And just to clarify, this is the first year this team has existed for girls, there are no other schools they're competing against, and we're like, three weeks into the season. My daughter said she really likes football but "I still don't know what a quarterback is supposed to do"

My son is 5, and he's in his second year of this, so I'm guessing by the time he is 8, he'll just be more accustomed to playing football, and thus understanding how all this works. And I think for me, the disconnect is, it kind of feels more like this coach is going by a typical age timeline as opposed to an experience timeline.

Also, an aside: During practice, he lectured the girls' about some of them showing up late and said they "owed him time" at the end of practice. I'm all about teaching responsibility but shouldn't that be a message for parents because...they're eight and don't drive?

This guys sounds like he should find somewhere else to volunteer his time and talents.  Organized sports at that age tends to be mostly organized cosplay for the kids, and sometimes the parents.  Just let 'em run around.  At least they're girls.  It took me one fall of being an assistant coach to a first grade boys soccer team to decide that Lord of the Flies is probably an optimistic book.

I have never seen Union get so hosed by a referee crew as this Cortland game.

Ice Bear

Home sick as a dog. Just woke up to see Cortland take it in for the 4th Q score with little time left in the game.

With what palooza said maybe it's best I missed this one.

Overall, how did Union look?

D played balls out.  Offense moved the ball but awful ref calls and four TOs, two into the Cortland end zone, made the difference. Union was poised to go up 13-10 at the start of the fourth when they fumbled on the Cortland 2.

Cortland pouring on garbage points now.

Caz Bombers

Bombers absolutely dog walking the Saxamaphones 38-7 early 4th.

Maybe Hopkins really is amazing then. Roll Bombs.

"Fumbled on the Cortland 2" on a play that could easily have been whistled dead for lack of forward progress but Patch Flanagan refused to go down and the refs never blew it dead...Moments later where/what was the second sideline interference dead ball penalty? I looked at what was shown on replay 4 times and nobody from Union bumped any official?

Union held their own in this game. It was a much closer game than the final score indicates. They had a chance to take the lead going into the 4th quarter.

Seems like there have been some positives for Union the first two weeks against some decent competition. I stay glass half full here and hope they can build on these positives and get things going in the right direction moving forward. Drach is going to need some time to build his team here.

Hey, say what you want about Patch but the kid just competes so damn hard. He's won me over.

Congrats to Brockport on a comeback 14-10 win today. Both Defenses played very well, but Brockport's DLine was too strong in the second half for Hobart's Oline. Brockport's RB is the best I've seen since Susquehanna. They pretty much shut down EJ Taylor except for a few runs. Hobart played way better than last week and showed they will be competitive against good teams, but Conrath potential needs to turn into more completions and wins if they have any chance against Ithaca who came to play against Alfred today.Hobart has Utica next week , so I'll be watching the RPI-Utica game with interest tonight. In any event the Hobart season will come down to the potential to win the LL, which I think they have a shot , but it's looking like they will have to use the Utica game to pull it together in order to have a chance against Ithaca in 2 weeks.
Oh, IC , your username is very safe ;D

Wow, the Utica transfer QB absolutely dismantling RPI right now.  21 of 22 for 298 yards and 5 TDs midway through the third.

stlawus

SLU definitely missed an opportunity to steal a win today.  Came back down 28-10 to make it 28-23, got a turnover in SJF's red zone, but inexplicable play calling on the goal line resulted in a turnover on downs.  Team is much better than last year, Lederman is going to have a great season, just a lot of inexperience on the OL right now.

Hobart plays Utica at home next week.....I'm scared to death, the Utica passing game looks insane. Hobart has a good pass defense but Utica looks like an NFL team. We're going to have to line their football with lead .....cheating is the only way to go. ;D

Utica's going to win the E8, I think. Cortland's strong 4th nonwithstanding, they're shredding teams, and RPI is no exception.

Hobart with a second tough loss. Could, and maybe should be 2-0. But they simply need to get more from their passing game.

A weirdly close 30-6 Union loss. It felt like the Chargers had it in them to steal an upset, but they committed turnovers at the worst possible time and just couldn't hold back the Red Dragons any more.

Tough loss for St. Lawrence, but maybe Fisher's waking up a bit in the E8.

Buff State loses to the Wick. Sigh.

Rochester uses 3 QBs but lands on one that produces three scores in a nice win.

I won't necessarily move Ithaca ahead of Hobart based on a win over Alfred, but the *way* they  won was impressive. Dominant offense, strong run defense, big special teams plays. It's hard to ignore a game that's 38-7 when the starters are pulled when Hobart struggled with them.

I drove to Brockport to see the Brockport-Hobart game yesterday. I was disappointed to see how few of the students came out in the fresh air to attend the game. I know it will never be like the"old" days before games were offered live on the internet, but hey, 4 0r 5 friends per each player would generate a few hundred students. I know this was not a critical conference game and was early in the season , but hey, I think there were less than 100 total students from both schools.

I don't think it's live internet keeping students away.

I think, increasingly, college is about internships, work experience, and extra circulars. If you're a journalism major, and all you're doing is getting a degree, you're wasting money and setting yourself up for a hard time getting a job after graduating. More and more, students are just *doing* more. The skill sets they graduate with are insane

And, the arms race of college has resulted in so many more amenities for students across the board. There's just more to do on campuses
