I didn't realize the poll was over when I posted.  Anyway, it was a good question .............

With a computer down all weekend, it looks like I missed quite a bit.  I've got a question for you Kid, since you're Captain Statistic.  Earlier there was talk about the points Guilford picked up in 'garbage time' against BC and how it portends bad things for the BC defense.  If I remember correctly, quite a few of those points came along because of the BC offense giving Guilford the ball in the short field and the defense coming on with VERY short rest.  You're the man, so how long were Guilford's drives late in that game?

Actually, three of their final five TDs were 75+ yard drives.  Only the BC fumble (25-yard line) and interception (1-yard line) were short fields.

I believe Guilford began to really mesh as a offensive unit by the H-SC game in game 4.  Not to belabor the point, but it took a few games for new coaches and a few key new players to learn "the system" ...  and each other.   Everyone at GC is painfully aware there is not much offensive balance this year.  Hopefully, a better running game will emerge in 2006.  I have also seen the defense mature and toughen up this year, but we are still in a mode where we simply have to outscore you to win.  Make no mistake about it, however, Guilford has some good athletes with skill on both sides of the ball, not just offense, so I wouldn't be constantly trying to rationalize why GC put up all those points.  Guilford may not win any more games next year than they have this year, but I don't think anyone they play can say they don't know what's coming in the 2006 season.

2005 All-ODAC Awards

Offensive Player of the Year: Marcus Washington (RB), Bridgewater
Defensive Player of the Year: Liam Murray (DE), Washington & Lee
Rookie of the Year: Josh Vogelback (QB), Guilford
Coach of the Year: Michael Clark, Bridgewater

For offensive player of the year, Ricca or Bublavi were close second and third on my ballot.  For defensive player of the year, Marshburn and Inman were second and third.  If Vogelbach didn't have the kind of season he did, then Simpson, Sitterson, and K.Ricca would be in the running for ROY.  And finally, my unbiased pick for COY was Clark because I feel it's much harder to maintain (especially for 34-straight games) a winner than it is to build.  But I could easily see the coaches/SIDs disagreeing and going with Kiesel from Guilford.

kid - You may be right, but I see Barnette getting first team and Kiesel COY.   Look at baseball, Bobby Cox of the Atlanta Braves wins his division every year, but rarely get Manager of the Year.  I think it'll be the same here, with Kiesel getting the award for a marked improvement in a program that had hit hard times.  As you said, however, there are some tough choices and it will be interesting to see how this plays out.   I can also see several things going either way.

Kid,
all you have to do is take a look back 1 year. Coach Miriello earned COY for a similar Conference finish. W&L was picked to finish last and ended 4-2 in conference, with a second place finish. GC was picked second to last and should finish in a tie for second. I think Kiesel takes COY honors based on past voting resuts (and a hint of bias... mostly history though ;)).

I also think Barnette, along with bublavi, will take first team all conference based on numbers, big time catches, etc...

Question to anyone who can answer:
How do they choose O-lineman for all conference? There are no stats kept (pancakes, lead blocks, sacks given up individually, etc...), atleast not by the ODAC. Is this one of those political battles?

Ehh ... Barnette was the real deal ... but of the receivers I've seen (all except Bublavi), Martin was the most impressive.  With Drew Smith (H-SC) second.  Barnette would be third on my list (and possibly fourth after the CUA/BC game).  Brian Awkard would be pretty nasty in a different system.  Like mentioned, BC is the least pass-happy team in the ODAC, but I think BC is the most deep (we rotate about eight guys).  When Catholic and Guilford pass 50 times a game, their receiver(s) are going to get the numbers regardless of talent.  But having seen Barnette, I'll admit he was very impressive.  But not as impressive as Martin or Smith.

Regarding COY, to each his own.

You think it's more celebratory to go from 1-5 to 4-2 ... I think it's more celebratory to go from 6-0 to 6-0 five straight seasons in a row.

You can also look at history and see that Coach Mike Clark went 0-10 in 1998, then went 5-5 the following year but Tom Clark (CUA) won COY because he went 5-0 in the ODAC.

So can I see Guilford being 1-9 last year, and possibly 5-5 this year as similar.  But Clark might go 6-0 (again), which to me earns him COY honors.

Only thing I would interject is that W&L had a safety who was a lot better than anybody HSC had in their secondary.  #16 or #15, can't remember.  He had a funny name.  He was all over the field and brought the wood against BC.  The only kid from HSC who really impressed me on defense was their linebacker Burrell and their frosh. CB that picked off a pass against us and was very aggressive in coverage all day.

Good analysis as always.

Kid...
- The only reason I didn't like Bublavi as much is because watching him this past weekend, it looked like he didn't come off the ball hard on every play.
- I agree when you pass more, your numbers will be higher. Can't argue that. GC uses 5 main WR's (vs 8 @ BC...but your roster size is also near double, so this is expectied)
- How do you place the WR's Martin, Smith, and then Barnette after their respective stats in the bridgewater game (which is where i assume you saw each)?
  Martin: 3 rec, 57 yds, 0 tds
  Smith: 9 rec, 137 yds, 1 td
  Barnette: 12 rec, 151 yds, 2 tds

to me.. you'd think it'd be the other way around?!?

the COY thing I was more so going on the past and how voting has seemed to have gone. I think it's more celebratory going from a team that 6 wins in three years to a team that has 5 in a season and finishes #2 in a tough conference (something no one expected) then a team who wins its 5 straight title (which most expected).

To me the difference is that Smith (HSC) and Martin (W&L) did their damage while BC was still playing defense since both of those games were 4 quarter affairs.  The Guildford offense didn't do anything until BC had a sizable lead it was never the same type of game.

That said, Guilford is much improved and should certainly be proud of what they've accomplished this year.  And Barnett did look like a pretty talented kid.
