If the Royals lose again to Drew tomorrow, their blip may be off the radar screen for another 8 years.
Contender or pretender??

ronk

Lot of ways the remaining games could go: 5 wins out of 8(beating teams in the 2nd half that they already beat in the 1st half) and winning a semi in the playoffs could be enough for an at-large berth.

saratoga

Of course there are multiple ways the last games can go...not arguing that point.
Just saying the rubber is about to meet the road in these final games.
Do they step up or step out of the way?
I would not trust an at large berth to a single win venture in the Landmark playoffs.
Body of work against really solid teams just isn't there.

ronk

In the new NPI world, the body of work against solid teams isn't quite as important a factor. Currently, the Royals stand 9th in projected at-large teams with 21 bids allowed. However, historically, approximately 5 bid thieves(teams that upset a top 21 team in a conference playoff) arise each year, teams ranking 17-21 could miss out in that scenario.
With 15 wins currently, the Royals get a NPI bump with each additional win; that is, they get to drop from their NPI computation their lowest opponent NPI element for each additional win. A win tomorrow v Drew would be a big help.

saratoga

It most certainly would be a big help.
Can they do it?
Massey says Drew by 4.
Will it be a big win on the road or another repeat of Wilkes?

I think Drew will be down a big ( not sure who) I was watching the game and it looked like he had a bad ankle injury.  Might have to re-evaluate that line.

Great Day to be a Royal

Going 5-3 would mean they finished the season 6-4 in their final 10, not including a likely quarter-final game in the conference tournament. I would think that would keep them out for an at-large.

Guess I'm not sure why the former Drew coach left for Ithaca.  Drew is now 14-4 with 2 wins against Scranton, while Ithaca has had a subpar season to say the least, and that's with taking one of Drew's best players from last year along with him.  It's not like Drew is a bad job.

saratoga

Agree re. the Drew job.
I questioned the move last year when it was announced.
Not like Ithaca is chopped liver but Drew is smack dab right between Philly & NYC talent with a ton of home grown Jersey kids, a nice little campus & a recent history of winning under Kleckler right through to Ryan.

As for the Royals...fade to black.

According to the most recent data, Ithaca's MBB budget was 60% higher than Drew's - they appear to have a full time assistant position and better facilities.  Plus the conference is going to be viewed better academically and it certainly more competitive nationally.

And, beyond anything else, it's been proven you can get a UAA job out of Ithaca - that's a pretty big selling point.

They're 5-5 in the league. Most schools give a new coach more than two-thirds of a season to show what they can do.

What's your metric for that statement? I'll choose a metric for comparison - NCAA tourney victories since Covid; Liberty has 3(RPI-2,Ithaca-1); Landmark has 7(Catholic-4,Susquehanna-2,Scranton-1).
