Big one in Whitewater tonight. Might be game of the week in D3.  Oshkosh keeps winning despite their bus not stopping at Hilltop for dinner.

Voice of the Titans

Rare road trip for me last night to Whitewater, with the obligatory stop at The Waypoint (before or after the game?). A very "oof" Q1 for the Titans, but I think the last minute of Q2 was the key. Being able to cut it from 9 to 5 (great song, as well) was big. Forcing 4 Turnovers and 0-5 shooting to end Q3 didn't hurt as well.

We couldn't handle Secktar inside.  The Titans made a point of getting the ball into the paint in the second half and she went to town. Then Beyer got hot.

The critical point in the game came in the third quarter at the 5 minute mark.  WHITEWATER was up by a pair when Beyer hit a three pointer giving the Titans the lead.  What followed over the next few minutes totally put in the game in the Titan's control.  After a Titan layup Beyer hit consecutive three pointers. Meanwhile we missed shots and turned the ball over twice.  What had been a 2 point lead became a 9 point deficit. After that it was pretty much downhill for us.

#3 UW-Oshkosh Titans go down to defeat tonight at Kolf Sports Center.

#21 UW-Platteville travelled to Oshkosh and pulled off the upset in a defensive clinic, 47-43.

Great defensive clinic by both teams.   I watched the game on the WIAC Sports Network.

#3 UW-Oshkosh takes their first loss of the season.  Here is the full story of their loss to the #21 UW-Platteville Pioneers-- posted by UW-Oshkosh:

Other notes from my observations--

(1)  WIAC uses media timeouts in their regular season basketball contests, and it looks like the WIAC has done so for years.  My home conference, the University Athletic Association, just started using media timeouts this season for their regular season conference games and all non-conference games in which a UAA team is hosting a team outside the UAA.  Not all DIII conferences use media timeouts in their regular season games, but I think that the teams making the NCAA DIII tournament field that compete in conferences that use media timeouts in the regular season have the advantage in not having to make another adjustment from competing in games without media timeouts in the regular season to using media timeouts for the NCAA DIII tournament.  Not all DIII conferences use media timeouts in their regular season games, and I am not even sure that a majority of the DIII conferences even use them-- even in this streaming age where the streaming provider might want to put in an ad in the stream to help the sponsoring school raise some revenue.

For people in DIII who are concerned about going to media timeouts, the length of the media timeout in DIII, if it is used, is the same length as a team called full timeout in a game that does not use media timeouts (60 to 75 seconds.)    This is not like Division I or II, where the media timeout could be 2 and 1/2 to 3 minutes to allow commercial breaks for ESPN+ or other broadcast/cable networks.

(2)  This was the first UW-Oshkosh home game in which the students were back in session from the winter holiday break.  The Wisconsin university system break for Christmas and New Years extended into practically all of January, with February 2 being the first day of classes for the spring semester.  I wonder if there is a special J-term in Wisconsin over the holiday break.

Tough one at Kolf last night. I'll take my portion of the blame.....even though I got there earlier than usual, someone took my parking spot. First game all year in a different spot. Could have altered the outcome. As for the actual game, points were at a premium. UWO missed a good number of bunnies, but the difference was the fact that UWP got 80% of the 50-50 balls, and took full advantage. Something like 19 second chance points on 13 offensive boards. When you're getting 40% of your points on a second effort, that's huge when 90 total points are scored. Back at it on Sunday.

YUP. I feel like Platt saved at least 3 balls going out of bounds, turning that into an offensive board and continued possession. Their effort was VERY VERY high.

About 2:15 to go, UWP missed a shot, scrambled for control, missed another shot, scrapped for another rebound, kicked it out to Mackiewicz who canned a 3 to go up 4. That let a lot of air out of the building.

WARHAWKS: 64
LaCrosse: 47

Neither team shot well in the first half but Mia Gillis hit a jumper at the buzzer giving the WARHAWKS a two point lead 27-25.  The third quarter decided the game as the WARHAWKS held LaCrosse to 25% from the floor while shooting 56% themselves outscoring the Eagles 24-8 to essentially put the game away. Gillis finished with 16 points and 7 rebounds while Brooke Stenkyft added 12.  Bri McCurdy and Camryn Nies had 5 assists apiece.

What a difference a parking spot makes. UWO jumps out to a 9-0 lead, RF gets it down to 2 at 13-11 before the Titans pull away. A bit more energy in this game than Wednesday's game. Couldn't get a "let's play football" chant started, either.

Stout: 66
WARHAWKS: 53

If only the game didn't consist of two halves.  WARHAWKS were doing just fine in the first one and it ended 36-27 WARHAWKS

Then came the second half when the bottom totally fell out.  Stout holds us to 2 baskets in the third quarter and one in the fourth while hitting just about everything they threw at the hoop, outscoring the WARHAWKS 39-17.

Nies Camryn (10 points), Brooke Stenklyft (6 rebounds) and Bri McCurdy (4 assists) led the WARHAWKS.

WARHAWKS: 50
Platteville: 46

Slow start by both teams but the WARHAWKS managed a 11-10 lead at the end of the first quarter and got 3 three pointers in the second quarter, while holding the Pioneers to just 7 points, pushing the lead to 9, 28-19 at the half. The two teams traded baskets in the third quarter and the 9 point WARHAWKS lead held when it ended 38-29. The Pioneers had their best shooting quarter in the fourth and conversely the WARHAWKS had their worse. Gradually the Pioneers cut into the lead until they pulled into a tie, 39-39, at the six minute mark. Over the next five minutes the teams would tie and exchange the lead twice before a Camyrn Nies layup gave the WARHAWKS a lead 45-44 that they preserve by going 5-8 from the charity stripe. Mia Gillis finished with a double-double 16/10 and added 4 blocks and a pair of steals. Bri McCurdy finished with 13 points.
