Just back from the Potsdam game at St. Lawrence.

Far more interesting than the final score indicated.

Potsdam coach Dobbs benched 3 starters and 6 reserves for the first half for reasons related to team rules.

Diminshed Bear forces (only six players saw action) were scrappy and kept it close in the first half, half ended with SLU up 34-25.  Freshman Damon Brown had 10 first half points to lead the Bears.  SLU had balanced scoring, but missed a golden opportunity with a 6x17 performance at the charity stripe.

In the second half, Potsdam's Edane Barton set a school record for points in a half with 27, added 6 rebounds and three steals, going 10x13 from the floor (In 16 minutes!!!).  SLU tried guarding Barton with everyone, but Barton kept driving to the hoop through traffic for layup after layup.  Brown added 12 points and 8 rebounds in his most extended action of the season.

Soph Tyler Shaver led Saints with 18 points, while Freshman Bela Vonnak had 16 points and 11 rebounds in 16 minutes.

Like Potsdam, SLU is very young with four freshman and two sophs in their 9 player regular rotation.  The Potsdam team that showed up in the last 10 minutes of the second half can compete with anyone.

Potsdam has the long trek to Fredonia and Buffalo this weekend.

Potsdam shoots down SL 34-25 halftime lead. As Maniac says, no Barton in first half and 3' for B. Siskavich then. It's latter's free throws that tie and former's layup that put Bears over the top in second half. Barton 27pts(10x13fg, 7x9fg), 6 rebs, 3 stls and 4pf -- all in second half, we gather. D. Brown 12 pts, 8 rebs (10, 7 1st half). Pdam 26x61fg(4x7 3s), 19x32ft. SL 18x35ft and 23x57fg -- (DA BEAR SPEAKETH ABOVE)

Quite the scare for Cortland in Utica. Host out to 24-12 lead. Cortland up 27-26 but trails 38-35 at half. Twas 64-64 at 4:39 and Dragons by 67-66 at 3:19. E. Belone '3' brings Tech within 71-70 at 1:10. Jutton trey at 0:14 lifts Cortland, whose M. Schaller two free flips at 0:04 the climax. First Schaller points of the season. Saw action for a minute.
Cortland 33x63fg and 4x10ft where UT was 2x4. Uticans 29x60fg and paced by C. Reaves 16 pts(7x16fg). A. Gilkes 12 pts(6x7fg), Belone 12 pts, C. Plante 11

Great nght for the concessionaires at St.  Lawrence. Z crew blows 50, count 'em, 50 personals. Teams combine for 30 turnovers, actually not bad for these two young teams, for a grand total of 80 play stoppages - not including time outs. Two per minute of play...smooth.

Need to maximize hot dog, popcorn, and No-Doze sales, be sure to reserve the Syracuse Whistle Wailers for your game. With 50 personals and 67 FT attempts, you'll have more than enough time to solicit visiting alums. Build that new field house today.

You had to be there to believe it.

While the new SLU layout is very nice, (no wall of death for players to  contend with as in past years), the entrance for the fans is through the back door.

Only concessions in sight were a couple of vending machines.

Nevertheless props to the Carlisle family (NBA Rick's folks) for funding a very nice upgrade, far superior to the Amherst facility that passed for a sectional venue last year.

In the first half, while Potsdam was playing with reduced forces, Potsdam's two post players set some sort of record with eight fouls in 35 minutes of PT.

First half FT shooting was serious futility as well.  Potsdam's 6x13 would be enough for wailing and gnashing of coaches' teeth, but SLU topped that with a 6x17 effort on their home court.

At least the game was cozy, weather outside was an sleet/ice storm with 45 mph winds.  Cute.

Barton was impressive in the second half, broke a 33 year old school record for pts in a half set in '73 first by now D-I (Siena, Marquette, Lamar, Wagner) coach Mike Deane, and later duplicated in '85 by D3 POY Brendan Mitchell.  Pretty heady company.

Bears are developing, SLU had just beaten Union, and last week Oswego at SLU - both top 10 clubs in the east region.

Cortland's 14th straight not a thing of beauty. Just 22x64fg but in  rebound frenzy with so many misfires (Platts 14x53). S. Taggard 19 rebs for Corts, with 9 pts in 26'. F. Ranieri 12 rebs, 11 pts. Props to Potsdam for their successful road trip. Check out E. Barton's stat line v. Buff State. Still amazing.

Not just Barton - look at Mitchell and Ducena, they missed one FT between the two of them.  Both 5x5 FG 4x4 3FG, combined 6x7 FG.

Ducena had a perfect shooting line. and added 5 assists.

These two scored 34 points on 10 FGA.  That's outrageous!

Barton leads Potsdam in scoring, rebounding, Asts, & Stls.  Among the top 50 nationally in rebounds and steals.

Credit to Buff St.  Many teams would have packed it in after losing their top player at mid-season, but the Bengals have the talent and athleticism to be a force down the stretch.

SUNYAC is always interesting this time of year.

Indeed - great support.

How often do you see one player grab more than half of a team's rebounds. That's wack.
