It will be interesting to see how the teams look after all the transfer portal stuff is over in a couple months.

Ron Boerger

Yes, D1 schools are definitely cherry-picking the top D3 baseball players (along with D2 and other D1s)

CLU's LHP Frank Willius (3-2, 2.78 ERA, 13 app/35.2 IP, .195 OBA) is off to UVa.

Starting to see a few rosters and schedules going up. Some big names have moved on and some others are ready to break out. Any pre-season predictions? The SCIAC looks to be a 4 or 5 team race again. LV and CLU appear to have lost the most key contributors with CMS losing arguably the biggest contributor.

DickWhitman

Were there only 5 pre-season all Americans from Region 10?

Ron Boerger

Actually four.  Trinity is in Region 6 with their move to the SAA.

Trinity is likely to have a strong NPI but only 5 games are with Region 10, two with TLU and CTX and one with St Thomas.

First "real" weekend in Region 10.

Host Cal Lu (Preseason pick #4 in a strong SCIAC field) went 2-1 versus #22 McMurry (and #2 SCAC pick). McMurry beat SCIAC #5 Redlands on Sunday.

Host Oxy (SCIAC #8) beat Centenary (SCAC #6) 2 games to 1; Centenary beat Whittier (SCIAC #7) on Sunday.

LeTU (SCAC #7) hosted Millsaps (SAA #5) and won 2 of 3.

CMS #12 (SCIAC #1) hosted UMHB (ASC T#2) and won 2 of 3.

The NWC does not have its preseason picks posted.

#19 P-P swept Pacific in 3 games.

DickWhitman

Not sure what to make of some of these scores so far. PP seems to have a prolific offense and no pitching. McMurry is having a rough start. Whitworth is hanging in there with some good teams and beat LV. The Cru with a couple top 15 wins so far and the rubber match today against Webster.

Ralph Turner

Yesterday TLU got 5 unearned runs in a 6 run 3rd inning in the 2nd game. Not your pitcher's friend.

In game 1, McM ace Hunter Poe yielded 3 runs in 6 innings.
McM pitching seems to need developing.

I don't want to give up too soon but McM lost some talent from last season and need to rebuild instead of re-loading.

Salvaging a win tomorrow is important.

Getting strong by the end of the season and the tourney looks like the best hope.

Interesting series so far between defending champion (and #1) UW-Whitewater and #9 Trinity.

On Thursday the Tigers started someone who hadn't pitched in two years (two brief appearances with an ERA of 54, yes, 54), didn't play at all last season, and against the top team in the country that went as well as you might expect (5H, 3BB, 5K, 4R/3ER in 3.0 IP) as the Warhawks won the opener 6-2.

In the doubleheader opener on Friday, Trinity was determined to exorcise the ghost of that game as well last season's D3CWS-opening loss to UW-W.  Sophomore Jack Beck (1-1, 4.27 last year in 11 starts/46 IP) started and held the Warhawks hitless through six, being replaced by fellow soph Joey Hagen (0-1, 10.80 in 4 apps/5.0 IP) after allowing two hits to open the seventh.  Hagen would hold UW-W to a single hit the rest of the way, and the Trinity offense lit up their opponents for 12 runs (10 earned) on the way to a surprising 12-1 victory, led by another sophomore, 1B Will Baker, who went 3-for-5 with four RBI.

With both teams establishing their bona fides in the first two games, the nightcap was a totally different story.  Trinity would get out to an early 3-0 lead, but Whitewater would slowly climb back in the middle innings to tie it at four in the top of the sixth after Will Taylor, who had relieved starter Will Heilings (5-1, 6.29 ERA in 19 app/4 starts/44.1 IP in 2025) one batter earlier, uncorked back-to-back wild pitches allowing a runner to score.  It became a pitchers' battle from that point, with neither team able to threaten until Cam Champness, batting from the bottom of the order, snuck a grounder past the Warhawk 2B with one out.  John Ramsey pinch-ran for Champness, and was able to make it safely to third when the next batter, Kaleb Woodward (3-4 with a sac bunt), singled to left field an a perfectly timed hit-and-run.  Grant Anderson provided what would turn out to be the game-winning RBI on a sac fly in the next AB, and Taylor, who was masterful (3.2 IP, 1H, 6K, 0BB) after the two wild pitches, got a ground out and two K's to close out the ninth and earn the win.

The final game in the series between these two will start at 9AM (!!) Saturday morning.

Is Trinity in the West or South team now?

Asking for a friend....

Logically a West team, by conference a South. I'm so confused.  :o

I have been away from D3 baseball for awhile and just saw that Trinity took 3 of 4 from UWW as I got to my computer today... Emotionally positive, but early season so it may not mean much, however it will help both teams if they don't win their conferences. There is a reason the top teams from the East roll into San Antonio for their first games. Good for visitors and good for TU. I caught a few innings of the webcast from TU. Pretty impressive. Nice job to for the webcast crew and video.

I see that TU updated their field. When are they going to get a proper broadcast booth?

Congrats to both teams on a great series.

Ralph Turner

TU & Southwestern have joined the SAA, which is Region 6.

Hendrix came to the SCAC from the SAA.

LeTU moved to the SCAC this year.
McM & Schreiner go to the ASC next year.

Based on the outcome of the weekend, I think it'll mean a lot to Trinity.  Got manhandled in the first game but thumped WW the next and then dug in to win two close ones to take the series 3-1.  Not the same WW team but as good as they're likely to see this season.

Since there is no such thing as a "West Region" any more, for historical and geographical reasons I'll keep talking about them here.

Teams from the north and east come to Texas early in season because it's 30 degrees and snowing up there much of this time of year.

And welcome back, 108.
