Yeah, last year was the first year since 2016 that Hopkins had not made the NCAAs and the first time since 2012 that F&M hadn't made the dance.

And, frankly, F&M had a bunch more years where they were truly dominant and made deeper runs in the tourney than Hop, but overall, they have been the two most consistent postseason teams in the CC for over a decade.

So, yeah, the Dips dip seems more precip-itous.

So, is this a sign that we can't count on death or taxes anymore either?

The coach had a seat at the table. Now that it is up to a computer things are tough in PA Deutsch land.

Quote from: soccerfan111 on September 24, 2026, 03:42:09 PMWhat's going on with F&M? Haven't caught a game this year yet, but they had a string of 10-12 years of NCAA and fighting to be in the Top 10 nationally. Tough year last year but seems like it's continuing into this year.

Obv. last year they fell off a cliff, but I don't think that was surprise for people watching the team. After 2024, they lost some serious talent. I would say the everything that could go wrong did, but overall they just did not have the talent to sustain what they had done over the years. During the great run, they always had two or three really good players, but most of all they had some serious leaders.

One thing that is new, Coach Wagner brought in 16 freshman which twice as many in most years. Overall, he is trying to figure out the mix. IMO, they have a good keeper and two centerbacks that really solid. Obv. where they are failing is scoring. Only 5 goals in 7 games while giving up 6 goals. If team can marginally flip this, they can get there in the last 8 games (F&M scheduled 16 games, but did not finish its first game bc of lighting).

This year they may have recovered a bit to be a middling team in the Cent. Conf. They need to finish in the top 6 to be in the conf playoffs and hope to be peaking at the right time. Will they get there, mehhh, maybe which is all good.

Yeah, make fun of them not getting beyond the 2nd round. It's all good, but how many of the 415 D3 programs would love to switch places? It's all perspective. Also, while success is important, the F&M alumni are very tight through their time in Lancaster and beyond. IMO, success is important, post college is much more. The team environment is the key part.

And I don't know why I'm defending the Dips, but that's a convenient year to start that accounting, because they made it to the Elite 8 once and the Sweet 16 3 times in the span before 2017.

Quote from: Hopkins92 on September 24, 2026, 12:40:48 PMCC appears to be having an off year and I would be surprised if they got more than 1 bid this year. Too many teams either played a really soft OOC schedule or lost to decent/good OOC teams. Predictions of Dickinson running away with things seemed to ignore the loss of some really important players (they are 4-4, and while losing to Messiah is understandable, some of the other losses are head scratchers, again, at least on paper.)
Having watched Dickinson vs Messiah for 40+ years (most of which included a matchup), I believe that the Dickinson teams of 2024 and 2025 were by far their best ever. With better luck, either could have been a Final Four team but especially 2025. They lost a great deal to graduation last spring, perhaps more than any other team in the CC, but others are more entitled to offer opinions about that. I don't expect them to win the AQ this year, but who knows? Maybe they will find some more magic and start playing consistently well the rest of the way.

You're right, I should have gone back to 1952 when they were voted Outstanding Team in the Nation by NSCAA :eyeroll:

Agree the relationships built are more important and it sounds like he deserves credit for that.

In the early twenties it seemed he depended too much on the club he is/was affiliated with and that did him no favors.  I also imagine his attitude with recruits and his Cro-Magnon approach to the game is not appreciated as much in the 20's vs the past.

I don't think saying that the 3 previous deep runs directly preceding your chosen cut off is a zany thing to bring up. If I'd pulled you back even into the 90s... point taken, tip of the hat.

But 2014-2016 saw some pretty good runs.

Hopkins guts out a blustery affair, 1-0 over the Fords at Homewood. I caught some of the first and most of the second. What stands out to me about both teams is... No one really stands out. They play their system, but I didn't see many individual duels or attacking flair.

I'd say Haverford had more possession and more dangerous chances, mostly from set plays getting lumped into the box.

I will say, the weather was absolutely a factor. Very rainy and you could tell it was extremely difficult to get the ball out of one end due to the weather (man do I remember that feeling.) Once Hop got the goal in the 1st half, they sat back and attacked with fewer numbers.

The Fords looked ready to score, but with about 15 minutes to go, Hop shut things down. Especially in the last 7 or 8 minutes, the only thing working for the Fords was getting fouled and lumping stuff into the box.

But 2014-2016 saw some pretty good runs.
Starting my analysis in 2013, because the Dips did not make the NCAA in 2011 or 2012.
2013 first two rounds at Dickinson--beat Catholic 1-0 and Dickinson 3-0; 3rd and 4th rounds at Messiah--beat Rose-Hulman 3-0, Lost to Messiah 4-1.
2014 first two rounds at home.  Beat Johnson and Wales 1-0, Beat Rochester on pks after 2-2 tie.  Lost in 3rd round at Oneonta
2015 first two rounds at home.  Beat Babson 1-0 and Gordon 3-1.  Lost to Calvin 1-0 at Kenyon
2016 first two rounds at home.  Beat Geneva 1-0 and Washington and Lee 2-0.  Next two rounds at Messiah.  Beat Cortland 1-0, Lost to Calvin 4-1
2017 at Lycoming, lost 3-2 to Drew in 1st round
2018 hosted first two rounds.  Beat Western Connecticut 2-1 in OT, lost to Eastern 1-0.
2019 hosted first two rounds.  Beat PSU Harrisburg 1-0, lost in PKs to Montclair State after 0-0 draw.
2021 hosted first two rounds.  Beat SUNY Poly 5-0, lost to Middlebury 2-0
2022 hosted first two rounds.  Beat St. Joseph's (CT) 2-0, lost to Cortland State on pks after 3-3 draw.
2023 hosted first two rounds.  Beat Geneva 1-0, lost to Connecticut on pks after 1-1 draw
2024 at Connecticut for first two rounds.  Beat Western Connecticut 2-1 in OT, lost to Conn 3-0.

Let's look at who they got knocked out by
2013--Messiah (National Champs)
2014--Oneonta (Final Four)
2015--Calvin (Final Four)
2016--Calvin (Runner Up)
2017--Drew (lost in 3rd round)
2018--Eastern (lost in 4th round)
2019--Montclair State (lost in 4th round)
2021--Middlebury (lost in 4th round)
2022--Cortland State (lost in 3rd round)
2023--Connecticut (lost in 4th round)
2024--Connecticut (Runner Up)

I would suggest that the only really bad results there are the losses to Drew and Eastern.  Could they have gone further, especially since they frequently hosted the first two rounds?  Absolutely, but 3 losses on PKs and losses to Calvin, Messiah, Middlebury, Conn, and Cortland State is not anything to be embarrassed about.
