Trinity continues to struggle against SCIAC teams, while La Verne steals a tie after going down a man in the 77th minute and hanging on.

In some ways, this may be the biggest upset from Friday's games

Cal Lutheran 3 - Colorado College 1

Zach Mohr, a sophomore forward who didn't score a single goal last year in 254 minutes, had a hat trick against Colorado College, scoring in the 13th, 51st, and 90th minutes to secure the second victory of the season for a team that couldn't beat or even score a goal on Russell Sage or Gordon College in its first two games, but has scored 7 goals in the last two games.  Cal Lu now has two wins on the season after beating Linfield the previous game and those two wins matches its win total for the entire 2025 season.  Meanwhile, Colorado College, which was 2-0 coming into this game after beating Whitworth and Wheaton (IL), was held to only 1 goal after scoring 8 in its previous two games at home.  I know CC is better at altitude and Whitworth and Wheaton have been nothing special thus far, but this was a pretty stunning upset.  And now Cal Lu gets to prove whether it's real or a mirage by playing an Emory team on Sunday that is smarting from a loss to Redlands, while Colorado College has to play a Redlands team riding a high after their win.

A few other game results from a busy Friday in Region X:

Southwestern 2 - Texas Lutheran 0

A nice, workmen-like victory for Southwestern against a TLU team that finds itself in the unfamiliar position of being 0-4 to start the season.  TLU has always been offensively challenged, but it has only scored 2 goals in 4 games this season and they also have lost their trademark defensive edge, giving up 12 goals in those 4 games.  The SCAC seems wide open this year, but TLU is going to have to right the ship quickly after what seems like a brutal stretch to start the campaign against strong programs.

Pacific Lutheran 2 - Wheaton (IL) 0

Kind of similar to the Southwestern win.  PLU is just better and took care of business early in the away game at Wheaton.  A better test will come today against North Park, which looked pretty decent against CMS and will be riding a wave of confidence into the game.  North Park, however, expended a lot of energy to secure the last second winner, which might offer an opening for PLU.

Whitman 0 UC Santa Cruz 0

A stalemate that probably is a boost for Whitman, which had a challenging trip back east, and a lost opportunity for a Santa Cruz team to take one on the road.

Willamette 2 - George Fox 1

Willamette starts out the NWC regular season with a win after losing two games to start the season against SCIAC teams.  It wasn't easy, though, with Willamette securing the victory with a goal in the 82nd minute on a brace by Brendan Pineda.  It has a chance to once again challenge for the NWC crown if it can use this game as a springboard and start conference play 2-0 with a victory over Pacific on Sunday.

Not a shocking result by any means BUT Howard Payne took a rare out of state trip to Pennsylvania for a pair of games and took down Penn St.-Berks 3-1 yesterday for just their second win in the last three seasons.

They take on Penn St.-Brandywine(#505) on Saturday.

For some context, HPU was #480 whereas PSB was #507 going into the matchup according to the rankings aggregator.

Howard Payne 6 - Penn St. Brandywine 0

Brandywine is transitioning to D3.  They are NOT a good team.  Nevertheless, Howard Payne still had to travel a long way and play the game.  To me, this and the Berks game are "scheduled" wins, but that's OK.  It gives HP the confidence to know that it is a level above the very bottom of D3, which is frankly progress for the team.

East Texas Baptist 3 - Belhaven 1

ETBU keeps their hot streak alive and takes down the Blazers in Jackson, MS. Fairly level on total shots and shots on goal. The Tigers just more clinical. Took the lead in the 33' and never lost it.

Whitman 3 - Mary Hardin-Baylor 1

Whitman gets a late insurance goal on a slipped ball that allowed the Whitman attacker to get behind three UMHB defenders and slot the ball into the back of the net.  That basically summarized the second half.  Whitman seemed to be a step ahead, at least mentally, if not physically.  UMHB's unbeaten streak to start the season comes to an end, while Whitman gets its second win.

Redlands 1 -  Colorado College 1 (66th minute)

CC tied it up just after half with a goal in the 51st and then went down to ten men in the 53rd on a red card.  Redlands is trying to break down the low block, but no luck so far.  Redlands is playing without Beckton, which makes the task tougher.

UPDATE;  Colorado College gets a 2nd goal in the 74th to take the lead!  Huge turn of events

St. Thomas 5 - Hardin-Simmons 1

I didn't see this coming.  Neither team has been particularly impressive thus far, but UST absolutely dismantled Hardin-Simmons.  Crazy thing is the three H-S goalkeepers were credited with 13 saves and still gave up 5 goals.  It was one of those nights.

Big upset in Ohio!

Occidental 2 - Kenyon 0

After losing to Denison 2-1 on Friday, Oxy comes back on Sunday and scores 2 on Kenyon - a brace by MF Kent Ortiz, who has only scored 1 goal in his college career - to ensure a happy trip back to Eagle Rock.  Kenyon had 22 shots, but was inefficient, only putting 5 on frame, while Oxy was incredibly precise - taking 8 shots, with 7 on goal.  The victory was all the more impressive since CB Cooper Gersch went off in the 80th minute on a second yellow card and they held on for the win.  Fortunately, Oxy had scored their second goal in the 79th, so they had a cushion without Gersch (whose departure was more damaging from the loss of their starting centerback than for being down a man at that point).  This was only Oxy's second win of the season and the first was against Azusa Pacific, which is only in its transition to D3.  Oxy lost to Gordon before the Denison game.
