Wash U went down a man in the 16th minute on a straight red card, but still scores first in the 33rd minute.  Pretty poor defense from Chicago.  They had 3 or 4 defenders near the scorer, but just tracked him in the box and he shot it between players to get it into the near post.

FINAL:  Wash U 1 - Chicago 0

Chicago had a chance in the final seconds and their free kick hit the cross bar, but otherwise it was a weak performance by the Maroons.  They simply failed to adjust to the man advantage or change their tactics at all, which was odd since Wash U wasn't even bunkering.  They were still trying to play.

Wash U wins the UAA

Disagree.  As evidence I would say that Chicago ended the game with 13 corner kicks (18% of the season total the Bears have faced), indicative of what they were trying to do.  Washington University played a fantastic game, the keeper and the back line disrupted everything.  Credit where credit is due.

No disrespect to Wash U.  They played great.  The ability to bring in subs in college obviously helps, but those guys were laying it all on the line and did very well, especially since, as I said in my post, they also were generating offensive opportunities, which isn't always the case when a team is down a man.  Wash U was good at creating that strong low block on defense, while still playing the ball out of the back and creating chances.

Chicago definitely generated corners and got down the wings.  Or to put it differently, they allowed Wash U to funnel them to the wings and dictate the game.  That's not to say that Wash U wanted to end up with corners, but they definitely wanted to divert them wide toward the end line.  Wash U did a good job of not getting drawn out when they were on defense.  They were disciplined.  Chicago alternated between bombing the ball forward and slow possession.  It was like they were both patient and impatient, except not really at the right times.

Kept waiting  for Chicago to amp it up, instead they looked uninspired.  When they went up a man I thought that was it.  By the end I completely forgot they were indeed a man up.

If the winner of Puget Sound and Whitman cannot manage to get a flight to Northfield, maybe they can just play the Oles on Zoom because the opponent does not matter that much.  I am joking of course.  Mostly joking.

The winner of Pacific Lutheran and Whitman, but otherwise you aren't all that wrong.  Few will remember, but Pacific Lutheran actually opened the season in Minnesota against St. Olaf and lost 4-1 and then lost 2-0 to Gustavus Adolphus.  No shame in either loss, and PLU has improved over the season, but I don't think either team is punching at the same weight class as the Minnesota teams.  They may prefer their chances in Texas.

Crazy that Brandeis, who finished 7th in the conference, manages to snag an at-large bid. Speaks to the strength of the conference and their scheduling for sure.

kansas hokie

conference standings don't matter beyond the impact wins and ties and losses have on NPI, Brandeis was in the tourney all season. Rochester and CMU were the UAA bubble teams that didn't make it.

I am aware...I was just stating of the abnormality of a team getting 7th and still getting selected. They've been ranked highly, both Soccer Coaches and NPI all season, they deserve it for sure.
