Time to start the 2025 thread with the release of Poll #1 from the United Soccer Coaches.

With NPI, this is basically just for fun and conversation, but it is fodder for social media and gives a sense of how the season is going for teams at a glance.

I know it is extremely early, but this poll is already showing the continued incompetence of United Soccer Coaches when it comes to rankings. The regional rankings are further proof. Something to monitor throughout the year, but as stated above, thank goodness for NPI!

Is that Trinity NESCAC? If so, when was the last time Trinity got ranked?

Ok, now this is ridiculous.

Trinity College (CT) is NESCAC.  Trinity University (TX) is SAA.

With Tuesday's 2-0 win over USJ, Trinity (CT) has already won as many matches as all of last season.

Total East Coast bias here!  If they were going to honor a loveable loser for winning an early season game or two, Caltech is 3-1 and Pomona-Pitzer is 4-0!  (Seriously, though, if it wasn't just a few coaches picking the wrong "Trinity" by mistake, this may have been one of those deals where coaches saw Trinity's win over University of St. Joseph's (CT), recalled that USJ won a lot of games last season and lost in the 1st round of the NCAA tournament to Wesleyan 2-0, and decided Trinity must have turned the corner without realizing that USJ lost to Wheaton (MA) 9-1 in its previous game).

Hopkins92

IF so, another reason the coaches polling in most sports is pretty flawed. It's not like they would've had a ton of results to pore over to dig that fact up. 9-1 kind of jumps off the page, right?

Obviously, Trinity (CT) Bantams are going all the way!!!

And The TX Trinity will keep the bus warm for halftime!

For what it's worth, we're not taking the #8 too seriously at North Park. Sure, it's popped up in NPU press releases, but that's just PR in order to garner interest and draw viewers to our Viking Sports Network livestreams. And, yes, the Vikings are good this season, but everyone's well aware that a jump from no preseason votes at all to #8 only two games in is pretty ridiculous.

It really just makes me miss the D3soccer.com guys and their poll all the more.

Soon.... soon....

SC.

Hopkins92

I should expand on my comment upthread. Coaches polls are dumb.

(tempted to leave it at that)

These guys are busy. It's not their job to find the 9-1 loss on a team that is secondarily removed from what appears to be a "good result."

But, as Mr. Sager implies, we get what we get and we don't get upset.

Simple Coach has his biases (which I often share) but you know he's going to look at the entire picture, because... He has devoted the time to do so.

I know I'm stating the obvious to many, but I sort of feel like this board needs more real talk.

Freddyfud

I look forward to the SC poll for the reasoning, which the other polls lack.  Probably even more so this year because run away teams are still not clear to me at least.

It was around this point a year ago a loaded MWU squad was #1. Who are this year's MWU and why?

Notable drops from last week's poll include Cortland's drop from 4 to 9 after losing at Rowan, Roanoke's drop from 15 to 23 after losing to Methodist, Oneonta's drop from 14 to 24 after losing to Vassar, and Illinois Tech drops from 23 out completely after losing to Lake Forest and North Central.  Christopher Newport, Ithaca, and Calvin are the biggest risers, going from not ranked to 20, 21, and 22, respectively.

Disappointed to see Trinity (CT) drop out of the top 20 after a 1-0 loss to Middlebury.
