Yes, Bates shocks amherst 3-0 today after 19 consecutive losses to the lord jeffs. Bobcats not intimidated at all by the usual bullying, rough play by the jeffs. A joyous ride by the Maine ....

Everyone knows amHerst has struggled in recent years with certain teams (and coaches), including soccer, lacrosse, etc.) whose behavior has resulted in sanctions by the administration and criticism by parents, fans, and unbiased respected observers reported here and elsewhere. Attempts to deflect this reality by amherst loyalists fails in every instance.

Many people, including even some presidents of higher educational institutions, are under the misapprehension that increasing the number of students increases the "profitability" of the institution. The reality is that some colleges, including certain ones in NESCAC, operate at a "deficit". Each enterprise is situational with various key factors, including breakeven point, analytical consideration of contingent liabilities, such as capital calls and pension obligations, liquidity constraints, impaired investments, etc. Be wary of blanket statements of solutions ....

Anyone know today's result of the Tufts-Williams men's soccer game? Final 2-0 Ephs? Still delayed due to weather, or postponed to be completed at later date?

NESCAC1, your points are all valid, confirmed by those of us knowledgeable about operating higher education. In addition, Mid's strategy mentioned in the articles of adding students is a delicate solution, as the financial marginal contribution of each incremental student equals the revenue received per student minus the variable costs. Aspirational growth rather than rightsizing has damaged numerous educational institutions... and other enterprises.

Hey nescac1, what is your view regarding NESCAC football teams shortly allowed to participate in NCAA post-season tournament?

Not so fast ... my view is that Williams should not have voted (if they did) for post-season football. The Ephs already end with a meaningful rivalry game, the season is of sufficient duration, the academic schedule in November is intense, vast differences exist in NESCAC regarding football admissions, emerging potential financial pressures, etc. In short, often "less is more." Perhaps the risk of being the odd person out (relative to Ivy League, others) outweighed the merit of defending a proven balance. Lots of possible unforeseen consequences ... stay tuned to assess the true value.

Tufts had leads as large as 17 points, and even 6 points with a minute twenty remaining at home in front of a tough crowd of Jumbo fans. Toad did provide a knowledgeable warning ....Sweet win for Redlands, really bitter for Tufts.

My late input to a recent discussion ... this year's UAA teams of Emory, Chicago, Washington University, NYU would dominate NESCAC semi-finalists of Wesleyan, Tufts, Trinity, and Hamilton in my opinion having seen all of them. This year's UAA leaders simply play faster, shoot better, defend more intensely, have highly skilled bigs, greater depth, maturity, balanced offense, etc. Each season varies, of course.

Disappointing watching a Williams team lacking fundamentals... poor passing and ball-handling, weak guarding post-ups in the lane, sticky ball movement, repetitive offense, too many give-and-go hoops by opponents, lack of consistent rebounding, in short, simply not Ephs' year. Appear a bit burned out now. Will peacefully await the rebuilding now underway .... Good luck to the rest of NESCAC teams the rest of the way.

EPHS down by 14 with 10 minutes remaining hold Bowdoin scoreless for the next 8 minutes, defeating the Polar Bears 66-63. Gritty win by a well-coached Williams team ....
