Quote from: HSCTiger74 on November 16, 2025, 07:46:13 PMThis has been an interesting discussion, and I understand the frustration, but without knowing the details of every D3 conference isn't it safe to say that most of them have their own Hilbert who will drag down their NPI.

But do they have 2? (A Hilbert AND a Buff State). And are they associate, football-only members?

Well, in the case of my own ODAC we have Averett (five conference wins in four seasons) at 216 and Gallaudet (a new associate member, outscored 401 to 95 in conference) at 220. Could substituting two middling OOC games for them have raised an 8-2 Shenandoah into playoff range? I doubt it, but who knows. All you can do is win your games and hope you don't get hosed by some computer algorithm.

Quote from: hazzben on October 27, 2025, 01:18:27 PM... if JHU, Carnegie Mellon, Wash U, et al can put very competitive teams on the field at both the conference and national level, there's no reason Carleton can't get there.

All three of those schools are much, much larger than Carleton. The NESCAC schools are probably a better comparison -- we just don't have the picture on how they stack up nationally as of right now.

It's funny, I literally deleted a comment about NESCAC comparison. Totally agree we can't tell how they compare. But to push back, "size of school" is something we say all the time doesn't matter for the WIAC. I suppose if you're academically "elite" you can lower your dial a bit more if you have a larger student body, compared to an enrollment of 2k. But then you'd have to prove to me JHU and Wash U are really lowering the bar, as opposed to just being better at marketing themselves to good HS talent that meets the standard.

This is an important point. Even when I was in high school many, many years ago I had heard of Washington University (Johns Hopkins was only five miles away, so obviously ...) but I had never heard of Carleton until I joined these boards. It really helps to be a national brand.

Despite the losses to this season's top three it looks as though Roanoke will be a team to reckon  with as they go forward. There's always been a lot of talent in and around Roanoke and the Valley, so if Coach Stinespring is able to make significant inroads with the coaches and schools there he should see his program grow and thrive fairly quickly. I have to say, on a homer-ish note, that I hope it's not too quickly, but he's definitely off to a good start.

Quote from: Pat Coleman on October 05, 2025, 01:45:39 PMI would love to see an attempt. People talk about Camp Randall Stadium in Madison and it is centrally located but I think the Brewers' stadium would be cool and the marketing weight of an MLB club certainly helps in these endeavors.
I like both those ideas, but c'mon ... Lambeau. I know it's the least convenient but the coolness factor would be off the charts.

Agreed -- NFL would mean it's off-limits half the season, of course.

Yeah, I should have taken that into account. Still not impossible, though, with good planning and some help from the Packers.

Quote from: y_jack_lok on September 20, 2025, 10:16:10 PMIn the first week of ODAC play:

H-SC 42 - Shenandoah 7
Gallaudet 39 - Averett 30
RMC 27 - Bridgewater 3
W&L 35  - Guilford 7

The H-SC win has to be the most impressive. The Tigers must be the real deal.

RMC looked better in its win than in the first two games. The aforementioned changes certainly helped. Passing game also seemed a little different. A freshman RB (#32 Tristan Overbay) looked good in his first action of the season-- five carries for 33 yards.

I'm starting to come around, and I sure hope you're right, but the last few years have left me reluctant to jump on the bandwagon too soon. W&L have been a real problem for the Tigers recently; if we get by them I just might have to.

Quote from: OzJohnnie on September 12, 2025, 09:10:17 PMThe Hawks demolished the Crows over in Adelaide, taking a leaf out of duffman's Road Warrior handbook.  They put on a master class for high-pressure, every-player-contributing in a complete game effort football.

Now we're about to enjoy another chapter in the greatest rivalry in Australian sport when the Hawks play Geelong at the MCG on Friday night in the Preliminary Final, the winner earning a run in the Grand Final.  The whole Oz family will be going and we can't wait (a huge benefit of being a Melbourne Cricket Club member - or we'll be trying.  I'll hit that Ticketek website the second seats in the Member's go on sale).

Not Essendon/Collingwood? Either way, good luck to the Hawks.

Quote from: Tigerfan on September 08, 2025, 01:53:31 PMWoo hoo! The Tigers are receiving vote in this week's D3Football.com poll.  Coach Luvara and his staff have been doing tremendous work in recruiting.  Quite a change to see the Tigers getting physical and winning battles on the line of scrimmage.  I like the direction of this program.

Like you I'm pleased and encouraged by what we saw on Saturday, and I definitely hope that it is a sign of things to come. But we need to temper our expectations a little bit and remember that it was only one game, and (if you believe the comments over on the MAC board) against a team that may be looking at a less successful year than they're used to. Hopefully they can keep it up, but let's see how they do the next two weeks against W&J and Shenandoah.

Quote from: lumbercat on July 25, 2025, 08:21:58 PMAnd if you like Lobster and want to wander off campus a bit take a 20 minute drive north on Route 1 to Wiscassett and hit "Red's Eats" for a great Maine lobster roll, one of the best. Nothing anywhere in the country like local, fresh Maine lobster.

We took a Maine coast vacation 30 years ago, using  Wiscassett as our base, and my wife still talks about the lobster rolls at Red's.

Quote from: HSCTiger74 on June 03, 2025, 11:33:37 PMOz, what's up with the Hawks? I can't remember the last time they lost three in a row (although I'll admit that I don't follow the matches as closely as I used to).

Two things, unfortunately.

First, the forward line has been under-manned all season. We've cobbled together a line that doesn't include a big gorilla to anchor it. Well-structured defence can just sit on everyone.  So if you can only generate limited scoring shots, you must score six every time. We haven't.

Second, our effort has really fallen off. Footy is a game that requires players to push themselves beyond their limits when the lungs are burning and the muscles are so tired. We've had a run against three top teams, the fourth in another day, and they have simply outworked us.  Good footy is 90% effort. If you're willing to outwork the other team (tackle more, repeat sprints in defence to maintain zones, thankless repeat sprints off the ball in offence to provide options that may never be taken) then you win nearly every time.

We'll see how we go. Four quarters of 100% effort is the only way to win at the top of the ladder.

Thanks. I obviously don't know all the detailed ins and outs of footy, but I've watched enough matches over the years to get what you're saying. And congrats on the win over WB.
