Quote from: CNU85 on March 28, 2025, 08:38:43 AMAt the D3 level, what is the goal of entering the portal? Is it to see if a D1 school is interested? Is it to let other D3 coaches know you want to play somewhere else? What message does it send to your current coach?

Or do you simply enter the portal because it's there and seemingly everyone is doing it?

The reason I ask is because I just looked at the stats of one of the players mentioned below. I'm not impressed just based on stats. Played less than half the games as a freshman. 2.9ppg. 1.4rpg. more turnovers than assists.

What's the purpose? I know the answer is that for every individual there is a different purpose/goal. I remember when a CNU player was in the portal. Really good player but I had a feeling no D1 school would be interested. And they were correct in staying away from him.

I'm more curious than anything else. Just pondering life at the D3 level.

Good questions all. I would note that the player you referenced was injured a good part of the year and is likely seeking to go to another D3 school would be my educated guess. You're not wrong that his stats seem hard to merit a move but....kids are kids.

One more: Dakota Sellers, UMW, (3 years).

Maybe a dumb question: how do you find out who is in the portal other than the athlete announcing it on X or Insta? The actual portal is only available to coaches, correct?

Tough loss for UMW to Emory. Up by 10 points at one point in first half, tied at halftime and Emory went up by 12 with 2:19 left. UMW clawed back to within two with the ball and 8.8 seconds left on clock. Got a good look on a three that hit the rim and then got their own rebound and had one more shot for two to tie it up and it fell short.

Still, an amazing run for a team that was 11-14 at the end of the regular season. Go Eagles, next year is bright with only losing two seniors (albeit one who scored a career high 31 points in the Emory game).

They're all great kids!

Agreed. UMW is crazy young, 10 of current 12 healthy players are freshman or sophomores. But Coach Kahn took Cabrini to championship game in 2012 and has been to tournament several times. This ties for the furthest UMW has ever gone. Team was 11-14 going into conference tournament.

If you had told me two weeks ago that UMW was going to the Sweet 16 and CNU and RMU were not, I would have asked, "What are you smoking?" Sorry to see those programs out but beyond happy that UMW is still dancing.

And I would note that 12 of GAC's 21 wins were against teams ranked 200+ in Massey whereas UMW only played 5 teams ranked 200+.  So if by "beating each up other in conference play" you mean beating up on bad teams, then I guess you have a point.

It always sucks for the last teams out and arguments can be made to change the system but this is the one for this year.

Agreed CNU85. I'm new to all of this but the situation is way less than optional. That said, those are the rules and glad to see both CNU and UMW in the dance.

But UMW was 3-4 vs. ODAC teams and that would have been good enough for their tournament. ;)
