Quote from: Pat Coleman on September 09, 2025, 11:19:09 AMYes, for sure! And 20 years ago these things happened more often, before we had as many conference games and as much emphasis on in-region/D-III opponents. Our basketball rule still applies for basketball, though -- there aren't any non-scholarship D-I basketball programs.
May I be that guy? Ivys are D1 and non-scholarship, IIRC.

The PFL doesn't compare to Ivy League basketball.

And now Hieldburg. Now, when can we get close to the Flying Dutchpersons? I'm sure some Knight alums will see this 3-0 start as an indication of a close game this fall.

I think the step-up in competition level has been good for Calvin -- they sure appear to be ahead of schedule in year 2 of the program. But Hope is a Top 25 program and I'm still expecting the Knights to be a multi-score underdog on the road in November.

Hogan and Michmerhuizen are serious #dudes.  Calvin has done a great job of getting really good (like All-Region caliber) players into the program from the jump. You see the youth and inexperience at times (like getting surprised by an onside kick in the 4th Q), but there's a bunch of talent there.  Hope might be a bridge too far this year, but if these SOs hang around through their SR year and Calvin has a pile of 3 and 4-year starters in 2027, it's not crazy to think they could be real challengers for an MIAA title.

Hope 26 Alma 29 in OT is the official score. Actual score is Hope 26 Alma 23. Why?  Well Alma ran the hook and ladder play, and the lateral from the receiver to his teammate was fumbled and recovered by Hope - game over!!!  Somehow the officials met (with the Alma coaches prompting) and called it an incomplete pass. How can it be incomplete if the receiver possessed the ball enough to lateral it?????

That's how I (and the Hope team) also saw it FDF. But we need to see a replay--perhaps it was a forward lateral/pass from the first receiver? Clearly he caught it.
P.S. I found the replay (also available below), and we saw it correctly FDF. The Alma receiver caught it at the 21, turned and lateraled it to the trailing back at the 23, who dropped it. A ref mistake seemingly costs Hope the victory (despite the Alma coach insisting it was an incomplete pass) . . . but it all happened in a flash and, without D3 replay, refs are human--perhaps thinking the first receiver dropped the pass instead of lateraling it? or thinking he lateraled forward? Or are we missing or misinterpreting something?

That said, it was a great even game for which an ESPN Gametracker odds maker would have gotten seasick in the last minute and OT. Too bad someone had to lose.

I don't see how anyone could disagree... There is NO WAY to toss it back without a catch. A tip forward maybe, but not a purposeful lateral. Shameful job of those refs. The MIAA really should look at this!

The MIAA or the NCAA should step up, Hope won this game 26-23. Game over.

Can't be done -- once the officials leave the field, the game is over.

The MIAA knows this, as well. They tried to do something in 2001 with a basketball game which had to be overturned.

HOPEful

He not only catches the ball, he twists and pitches the ball. It is a fumble, was called a fumble, and should have remained a fumble. Rough way to lose what could very well have been the de facto MIAA Championship game.

For what it's worth, at the end of regulation, Hope failed to convert on a fourth and goal play that would have ended the game but Alma was called for holding. The hold was one that could easily have gone uncalled.

Still, I just simply can't understand how 8 refs all huddled together and decided to overturn the call on the field to an incomplete pass.

I believe that play will be used as a "learning video" at future referee jamborees.

The psalm-singing would sweep across West Michigan. Dordt did beat Northwestern this week, so maybe the RCA footballers are trending down?
