Over the past three year's of watching NCAA playoff football on network TV I have personally witnessed four occasions where the host school shot off a cannon following a home team touchdown.

Just out of curiosity, who were the four home teams? Obviously not FBS, but which FCS or DII/III teams did you see?

Why don't all of you have chili leading up to the games, and make a "natural" boom. It might change their minds, if they attend. I'd like to see them try to ban that.

FYI, I have no love for the cannon man, and have trouble with how upset you get when it is "banned." However, I have more trouble with the NCAA doing things in this vein, for no good reason that I can think of.

FYI on your FYI

You say I have more trouble with the NCAA Isn't that what I'm basically saying in my commentary?"  I have no love for the cannon man, and have trouble with how upset you get when it is "banned. When penning the commentary the only reason I might have been "upset" was getting my "stroke induced" fingers to work my computer's keyboard more efficiently.

The whole "Cannon Man ban started back in 2006. It was one year after SJU's John Gagliardi got tired of hearing the cannon go off multiple times in UWW's 34-7 win over the Johnnies in round 2 of the '05 playoffs. He wasn't a big cannon backer!

As for being upset? Nah, just competitive by choosing to use my pen/computer to chronicle my thoughts on UWW and D3 Football on my Website and Blog.

Hazzben, Thank you for inquiring.  Three of the cannon sightings were in the FCS semifinals... the other in D2

I agree with you Bleed, the NCAA needs to quit taking the fun out of the game and taking the home field advantage away from the teams that worked so hard to get home field advantage.   Cannon's, cowbells don't play the game.

I have never fully understood why a number of schools that traditionally draw large crowds to regular season games have a tough time putting fans in the stands come playoff time.  I know Whitewater's playoff attendance at the Perk isn't even close to the regular season.  I've spent the past couple of days researching playoff attendance figures for a number of annual playoff participants.

I'm in the process of writing a Website article on the issue. I'm seeking any thoughts you guys may have on reasons why fans don't show up come playoff time.

You can either respond here... you can also drop me a PM or email me your thoughts at tpattis@core.com.

Thanks I advance for any help you can give me!

Speaking of damn cold it's supposed to be 28, with 20 mph winds on Saturday. So prepare to bundle up!

The biggest thing besides cold is the ticket prices. There are only so many (if any) free tickets that can be had for students and after that they won't pay.

So it wouldn't bother you a bit if one of your program's traditions was banned "for no good reason that I can think of."  For some reason I find that a tad difficult to believe.

WHAT? Please reread my post.

I acknowledge that I have no connection with your cannon man tradition, but that's just it. I have no connection, ergo I don't understand. However, it seems that this comes up every year. It's really diminished your chances of doing well.

I hope that changes. I can deal with the cold, but windy sucks!

You don't have to have a connection to our tradition to understand why banning it might be upsetting.  All you have to have is a connection to a tradition of your own.

I don't know if it's my failing memory, but it sure seems the last 4 weekends have been particularly windy- windiest I can remember.
I'll take light rain, snow and cold over wind

If the wind is coming from the west we should be ok, the Perk would block it for us. Otherwise it'll be freezing.

Ha! In today's Around the Nation Podcast, Pat and Keith talked about how the Packers can't win without Rodgers.

Didn't see that topic coming when I listened in.  :P
