Since we are on nicknames.....What is a BluGold? Animal? Vegetable? Mineral?....

That was one of my favorites,  pre game warm-ups  yelling over to the EC players "what the F@*K is a BlueGold"  of course they would come back with FU Pisswater :D

I belive it is a bird.
A Blugold isn't anything.  It's merely a combination of the school colors.

Years ago I believe they had a contest to pick some kind of object or animal to "be" a BluGold but as far as I know they never followed through with it.

Thanks for the info on the U of I Chief's dance, Just Bill.  I learned something new.  And thanks to Oshdude as well.  Great info and a respectful discussion.  Now, back to football.  I hear this years UWO team is better than last year.  Hawks will need to be sharp!  Time for my rant....................

Some one correct me if I am wrong but I believe that Whitewater's mascot back in the 60's and 70's was an Indian but still called the Warhawks.

P.S.  If you want to scream about "political correctness" then scream at the schools who dropped the name Trojan because it's the same name as a brand of condoms.  Now that's ridiculous!
Didn't know any schools had done that, but that would prevent one of the greatest sports headlines ever:

Trojans roll on

They would've been better off just having a board with 8 different colors on it as their mascot and then call themselves the fighting pastels

It seems that the last few pages show that we can have an intelligent discussion, disagree, without making it personal. Everyone made valid points, and I doubt if we will come to total agreement here. As a catholic, I am not offended by the San Diego Padres, and their goofy looking mascot, nor the Anaheim (or whatever) Angels, and a host of other lesser known nicknames/mascots. I realize that those names come from a historical basis, which may be slightly different than the origins of some of the native American nicknames/mascots. We all need to be a little more sensitive to others, -both ways.

Good luck to UWW this weekend!!  There have been some close calls and some big wins!! Keep up the good work! OLiners, you are the best.  Keep doing what you do so well!  Defense, keep the other team out of the endzone and that will care of the game!  All the best from the Olinemom!
+karma to Footballfan 413.  Cheer for me.  Say hi to Sakman1111 if you happen to see him!

You are absolutely correct kubiack78.  But, it's been such a long time since the change that I don't really remember when it happened, other than I believe it was well before La Crosse changed from Indians to Eagles.  If you listened to the warhawk fight song, you can still hear a heavy emphasis on what sounds like the stereotypical Native American drums.  The Willie Warhawk mascot was in cheap, Indian dress, also if I remember correctly.
I think it's interesting, up until this year, written in the pre-game notes published on the warhawk football web pages, when describing UWW nickname, it made a disclaimer that the warhawk nickname represented a bird.  I noticed this year it doesn't make that reference.  Maybe with the heavy national exposure the past couple years, it is well known now days.

EDIT:  kubiack78, now that I think of it, when I started going to warhawk games in the late 1960's at Hamilton Field, before Warhawk, now Perkins Stadium was built, I believed the WW helmet featured the WW logo of the Indian with raised tomahawk in his left hand.

One of the best features of going to a game at Whitewater used to be the dude dressed up as a Chief and riding a horse around the bowl of the stadium.

Also, the proper response to "WTF is a Blugold?" is "A Winner."

There have been several attempts during the years I've lived in EC to either get a new mascot or define a Blugold. The closest they came was in the late 70's or early '80's when they actually voted on a sort-of medieval looking supposedly-fierce-looking bird, but it never really caught on.

They probably have about as much of a chance at getting a new mascot as they do getting a new arena! :'(
