Outside the Crate

All ARC teams seem to have had a productive recruiting year -- except for Luther.  I suspect the late hiring of their new coach impacted their recruiting.  By my quick calculations:
Luther has 66 on the roster with 18 first-years.  Eighteen states represented but only 8 players from Iowa.
Buena Vista has a roster of 79 with 34 first-years.  Lots of Texans and only 7 Iowa frosh.
Central's roster is the second largest with 149.  Sixty-eight first-years including 56 from Iowa.
     Coe's roster is 98, with 43 first-years.  Twenty-one first-years are from Iowa.
Dubuque has 158 on the roster, the largest, with 47 first-years.
     Loras' roster numbers 108 with 39 first-years.
Nebraska Wesleyan has 118 on their team with 44 first-years.
     Simpson's team has 98 with 38 first-years.
Wartburg's roster is the third largest at 142 including 57 first-years, mostly from Iowa.
I've always been interested that Central and Wartburg seem to have the most "draw" among Iowa high school athletes.  For a variety of reasons, this is a strength.  What are those reasons?  Most notably, Iowa players likely qualify for the Iowa Tuition Grant.  Second, and generally, retention is significantly higher with in-state students.

Great questions.  I suspect the history of success in football for those two schools has something to do with it.  It's in locals minds that those two schools are successful.  I'd also be interested if Central and Wartburg do a better job than other schools of building relationships with in-state high school coaching staffs?  UD recruits Iowa well in other sports, but for some reason has struggled with in-state recruiting when it comes to football.  That has always puzzled me.  You keep a large class into their senior year and your odds of success seem to go up.  Dubuque had senior heavy teams in 2011 and 2015 when they won the conference.  I think they only have 10 or so seniors on this years squad.  That is somewhat worrisome for me, but I like that there are I believe 50+ sophomores on the UD roster.  That bodes well if they continue to stick around.

Coming over from the MIAC board. I believe Carleton scrimmages at Dubuque on Saturday. How will Dubuque be this year? Will anybody be at the scrimmage? I'd love to hear some post-scrimmage analysis of my Knights.

I think Dubuque and Coe will be fighting it out for 3rd and 4th place this year behind Central and Wartburg.  I'd send my daughter over to the field to watch the scrimmage, but she has no football knowledge.  Might try to get her to ask one of the football players for his views on the scrimmage and how he thinks the year will play out.  Though I might be sworn to secrecy and unable to share any scuttlebutt  ;)

My friend is walking the Camino de Santiago.
The first people he met were from Central.

I had a picture, but the file was too large.

According to the UD football Instagram the scrimmage is at Carleton.  If you're driving in the other direction...turn around!  ;D

He was listed as not returning on the preseason info we got from Central.
Another huge hole to fill. Good thing we have 69 new freshmen to compete for his position.

S S,
Remember that the best thing about most freshmen is that they become sophomores.  ;)
As good as Central might be this season, even better next year?
So young hero, ask yourself............................Do you want to go to college, get a good education, and play (basketball)(football), or do you want to go to college, get a good education, and watch (basketball)(football)? 🤔 😏

Don't surround yourself with yourself. 🧍🏼‍♂️(Yes)

Maybe I missed an announcement,  but is there going to be the annual issue of Kickoff this year?
Reality is for those who lack imagination 😀

Wow, small world. Central had a study abroad program in Spain for decades. Then they did away with it completely to revamp how they did study abroad. Not sure what is happening now.
