UMHB (and many other teams) rejoice:  http://athletics.mountunion.edu/sports/fball/2013-14/releases/2013050824c2oj

ALLIANCE, Ohio – University of Mount Union's Larry Kehres has decided to step down as head football coach, but remain the director of athletics, while Vince Kehres has been named head football coach effective immediately.

Obviously Vince has been there for many years so there will be continuity, but whenever an epic coach retires it's rare that there's not a period of time until the team regains its footing.  And Coach K staying there as AD will help.

Yes and no. I mean, I would have liked to have beaten them with him there. I'm sure teams would have loved to have beaten the Bulls with Jordan on the team.

Besides, UMU will continue to be the standard. Their name and history will outlive their coach. They will continue to be the target until someone other than UWW beats them.

Will definitely be some big shoes to fill for his son and the rest of the staff to continue their dominance. I am wondering how long others have know about this decision, did potential recruits know about this? Kind of a let down if you thought your coach was going to be one of the best ever and then he retires.

Every year I know it is a waste of money but I can't stop myself from buying the few national college football magazines that feature anything relating to the D3 world. With that said I just picked up the 2013 Sporting News magazine that feature their typical 2 page spread about D3. Despite our first non UWW vs Mount Union national championship game in 7 years, the title of the article is "It's Mount Union and UW-Whitewater vs the field-again" and there is no mention of the departure of Larry Kehres.

There top 5 ranking is
1. Linfield
2. Mount Union
3. UW-W
4. St. Thomas
5. UMHB

Hardin-Simmons came in at 21 and had a player, punter Brandon Abbott, listed as a preseason All-American.

Mississippi College also got some attention in Keither Villafranco being named a preseason American at DB.

Along with their ranking, UMHB also was listed as a game to watch with their stadium opening game against Wesley who is ranked 6th and Mountana Duncan was named a All-American.

I know the USA Today preview does not have those issues. :)

Do you know when that will hit newsstands if it hasn't already?

Pat Coleman

I'm not sure -- I would have figured it had but I didn't get a copy this year.

Looks like the ASC doesn't have to worry about having enough teams for a while now ...

Wow wasn't expecting that. Anybody know when/if thèy can apply again?

There's a thread already on this (scroll down for recent conversation) here:

but you do wonder if the reason they had to give up the D2 national championship they won in '89, for giving out double the number of allowed scholarships, had anything to do with this.

The school plans to appeal but if unsuccessful I imagine they can try again next year.

HSU fans, I just noticed that you guys are scheduled to play Texas College of the same day that HBU is scheduled to play them. What's the deal with that?
