wow, congrats to my titans on a huge upset today.  the crusading thunder have been dominating this series over the last 15 to 20 years, so it's nice to see something positive happen this year when everything else seems to be nothing but negative.  mugsy, i know you said the difference was the turnovers on the wheaton side, but we'll take whatever we can get at this point in the season.
Hail, Hail, the gang's all here, all out for Wesleyan!

devildog,
While turnovers played big, especially the Int for a TD, I don't want to take anything away from the Titans.  They played mistake free football, capitalized on their opportunities and held Wheaton in check for most of the game.  A deserved win for the Titans.

Wheaty,
I've been to 3 Wheaton games this year and have listened to the one's I could not attend.  Some of the games have been difficult to listen too... that said I've been spoiled over the past 5 years by how Wheaton has played.  I'm not in a position to say exactly what is going on with the turnovers and struggling offense, as I don't have opportunity to study the film.  But in the games I've seen, Chupp clearly isn't clicking like he did last year.  Personally I believe it is a number of factors involved... Chupp may be forcing the issue trying to make plays, all new receiving corps... receivers not getting off the ball well enough... etc...  I don't question at all Chupp as an individual.

While Wheaton has struggled this year at times, I know they will continue to play hard and could still factor in the final tally.

Titan Q

IWU's senior quarterback Tom Kudyba really had a big game today for the Titans.  He made a number of big throws in the 3rd and 4th quarters to lead the Titans to victory.  I'm happy for Tom because he is a CCIW championship caliber quarterback that unfortunately is the victim of bad timing...being at IWU during a real down stretch.  Kudyba keeps going out there every week despite being hurt and, quite frankly, playing behind an offensive line that can't protect him.  I'm glad he was able to be part of a game like this.

IWU's defense was great today as well.  Wheaton came in averaging 37 points per game and the Titans held the Thunder to 14 points.  Chupp having an off day was certainly part of that, but I think the IWU defense was a big reason he had that off day.  The interception returned 60 yards for the TD was certainly the big play of the game.

This was IWU's first win over Wheaton since 2001 and just the second in the last 9 seasons.

Few notes on the Carthage-NP game:
As a former redman, the "d" looked awesome, even without barnes. Safety/punter moore, was a key to the game. As a football fan, a while back there were several posts about the redmen playing cheap. I 100% agree. There were several late hits during the game. What was more surprising was that even the carthage students sitting nearby me were talking about the cheap shots. It was all over the field and what was more surprising was that the refs let them get away with it. NP held in their being down 7-3 at half, but field position was the key today. Great defense, but very cheap team. Its as if it is almost practiced everyday!! >:(

CCIW

Anyone out who has seen the Crusading Thunder play this year....what has been the problem with the team vs. last year?  Young?  Lost key players that they could not reload?  Talent level down?

I know they have been turning the ball over....is that because of a weak o-line?  Curious about your  obsevations.

They had a very strong recruiting class this past year, so I would guess they will be back in the thick of things soon.  Who will take over as O-cordinator next year?

ARE YOU KIDDING ME!! Is this same tired crap going to start again? The Refs LET them get away with late hits. Apparently not as late as you may think. What game were you at? I saw a football game.

Tailgater, I think Carthage gets picked on as being dirty because that is their reputation from years past, which unfortunately still follows them and puts them under a microscope.  I haven't seen Carthage play in a couple years, and they may not be cheap shot artists at all anymore.  However, when a team has that historical reputation, everyone watches them that much closer, so anything remotely looking like dirty play is automatically assumed to indeed be dirty play.  Fair or unfair, I think it's simply a matter of their reputation preceding them.

How about we focus on a much needed return to the win column for the Redmen. Defense limited NP to 10 yards rushing (no surprise) and with a group of young backup defensive backs (due to injuries) kept NP's passing game out of the endzone. The offense moved the ball well enough to control the clock & put points on the board. Special teams were key to field position all day as Donovan Moore kept NP pinned deep and he also converted on a couple of first down runs from punt position. All-in-all the Redmen played with confidence. This will be a big lift as they prepair to head to Wheaton next Saturday.

Tailgater-

We have all been to the same games you have...you seem to be the only one not seeing the late hits...sometimes the refs see em sometimes they don't.  You defend your team...I would do the same, but no matter whether you or the rest of us think its dirty play or not, just remember its not out of some hate for Carthage...Its my opinion that the late hits nad personal fouls cost Carthage, maybe not against NP, but against NCC and maybe others (I can only comment on the NCC game its the only game I saw them play this year)...regardless I am not atacking Carthage in fact I happen to like thier style and intensity, but as I have posted before it needs to be a little more controlled otherwise the penalties will kill them

by the way...I am new here...

what is Karma?

and how does that work?

Congrats to Illinois Wesleyan for their win over the Thunder.  Wheaton really needed this one, but clearly couldn't stop the Titan offense when it counted.  That said, the offense is why the Thunder lost this one.

I haven't seen seen good play on Wheaton's part since the first half of the North Central game.  Chupp just doesn't make good passing decisions and Wheaton's line can't open it up for the running backs.  Wheaton is a respectable team this year, but will have trouble winning out against Carthage and Augie.

I continue to be impressed with Augustana.  Every year they seem to "sneek" up on the CCIW title and just miss it.  Augie may be the team that knocks off North Central and wins the conference this year.  If that's the only loss coming up for North Central, we may see 2 teams in the playoffs this year - and that I'd love to see.

How does Augie tend to always "sneak up" on a conference title? The past 3 years they had a share of the title or would have won it if they could have gotten past the Wheaton roadblock. The last time they won conference in 01 they still lost the game to Wheaton. If anything Carthage snuck up on people last year after having an early season CCIW loss to earn a share of the title.  The CCIW should get 2 teams into the playoffs just like last year.

Notes on NCC-Elmhurst.

NCC's D is highly suspect.  They had two starting DB's out and Elmhurst moved the ball at will.

I think Augie is going to roll NCC's D in a big way.  There is no way they can stop Augie's rushing attack this year.

Holden should get 20 touches a game.   I am very surprised they don't use more screens to keep the rushers honest.

Kniss is like the second coming Brykla.  He is not fast or big....but he is a damn good QB.  He has great lateral movement against the rush and plays extremely smart.

NCC was lucky to get out of Elmhurst with a win.

HOWEVER, they again proved that they can score at will and that they have some serious moxie in tough game situations.

Tailgater...we were at the same game. You chose to not notice Carthages o-linemen blindsiding defensive players after the whistle. i noticed it at the last home game. How bout the personal foul on the carthage lb who late hit the qb?? one of the few flags that was thrown. Pretty cheap if you ask me!!
