WashU scores late in first half to take 27-26 lead.

A lot going on from long TD pass to kick off return for WashU. Carroll blocked extra pt ran it back for 2 points. Carroll starting SO QB for his first start. Carroll getting its running game going. I'll provide stats at the end.

WashU 41 Carroll 29 Final
WashU D played better in 2nd half shutting down the run and WashU O started using their QB in the running game. He ended up with 114 yds rushing.
One WashU player that stood out to me is WR #2 Makael Carter. He had a 98 yd kick off return for an TD and made a catch in the 4rth Q with two defenders on him. I don't know how he caught it. They have a few players on that team that can make big plays.
I liked the way Carroll came out after UWEC loss. They played better. Looks like they are going with the young QB as starter.
Carroll ended up with 361 total yards and WashU had 381 total yds.

The MVP of this game? Logan Hansen. The Hansen Ratings predicted a 63-0 NCC win.

Illinois Wesleyan 42, Elmhurst 6

The only score in the first quarter was a Bluejays pick-six, and I'm guessing that EU went into the second quarter believing that the 'jays could make a game of it. That sentiment evaporated in a big way. It's going to be another long year for Elmhurst football.

Ok, NPU just blocked an xtra point and ran it back for 2 pts. Carroll did the same earlier in the WashU game. That has to be rare to see that play multiple times in a weekend.

I'm pleased to say that Ben Butler didn't high-five a teammate on his way down the field for that reverse two-pointer. ;)

All the talk about Aurora joining the CCIW jinxed them.
Benedictine beat them today to break their 46 game win streak in the NACC.

Crusader92

No problem for Wheaton in Rock Island - 50 to 7.

Nice win. Pick 6 at the start and blocked punt for TD. Looked like all phases rolling.

The Vikings played poorly, and deserved to lose. They lost the battle of the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball for most of the game. They did lose two starting O-linemen in the first half whose legs got rolled up on, but even before that the O-line was getting no push. And Millikin's D1 transfer QB Sylas Gomez -- who is very good -- had too much time with which to work. He invariably made good decisions with the ball, threw it downfield with great touch, and got a lot of big yards with his legs, including the key 1st down that sealed the deal for Millikin.

Conversely, Jorden Green had a really bad game. He was almost invariably off-target with his throws, and he locked in too much on his primary receiver, which for most of the game was Wesley McCloud (since Jereme Ombogo had two blue uniforms breathing down his neck no matter where he was lined up in this game). Green's total ineffectiveness resulted in his getting pulled late for sophomore Caillix Dillon, making his QB debut for NPU. Dillon really brought a spark to the Vikings offense, but a fateful failure to convert a 4th-and-1 in the red zone early in the fourth quarter really spelled the difference in this game. (I should note that Green did come back for one play -- the QB sneak that led to NPU's final touchdown -- but he came out for the two-point-conversion try, which makes me wonder if he's going to be QB1 next week or if it'll be Dillon.) Despite all that, Millikin's horrid kicking game (missed PAT, missed FG, two bad punting snaps ... the second of which sailed over the punter's head and turned into a safety) helped keep the Vikings in the game in the fourth quarter. The Vikings just couldn't get that red-zone 1st down when they needed it, or the stop on Millikin's final possession.

Millikin out-executed NPU for most of the game and deserved the win.

Oh, well ... here's hoping that Elmhurst is the cure for what ails the Vikings as they entertain the 'jays in next week's home opener.

Was down in Rock Island for an Alumni golf outing during the day and went to the game last night.  Augie was completely overmatched against a Wheaton team that, while solid, is certainly not one of their better teams in the past 10+years.  Not much to say about Augie, a couple of good drives to start the game, but after throwing the batted pick six and then failing to pick up a first down deep in Wheaton territory on the next drive, despite having it 3rd and 1, it was all over after that.  Didn't bother to stay for the 2nd half as there was no chance of a comeback.
The transfer QB has some ability and Breyden Smith is a pretty good receiver, but, beyond that, there isn't much there. The defense is just bad.  Augie will be very lucky to win 4 games this year and I'll honestly be surprised if they do. It will be interesting to see how they fare next week against Millikin, who seems to have turned it around, somewhat, this season.
