Mr. Ypsi

Question from totally out in left field:  Is there an "official" pronunciation for that sea to the southeast of us:

   1.  CARE uh be un
   2,  Ca RIB ee un

I confess to using them pretty interchangeably: as a noun standing alone it is usually #1, as an adjective generally #2, but I'm not real consistent.  Just wondering if I am sometimes 'right' and sometimes 'wrong'. or is it simply arbitrary?

I'm betting this group of scholars can say (or confuse this issue even further!) ;)

My dictionary lists your #1 (CARE uh be un) as the #1 pronunciation. It's named after the CARE ib Indians. Your #2 (ca RIB ee un) is regarded in some circles as an affectation but is listed as #2.
So, I guess, both are correct. I use #1 myself. Hope that helps.

Your #1 is more like CARE uh BEE un. I don't know how to change my post.

from the Merriam Webster online dictionary:

Ca·rib·be·an | \ ˌker-ə-ˈbē-ən ,  ˌka-rə- , kə-ˈri-bē-ən  \

from the Oxford English online dictionary, which shows pronunciations for British English and U.S. English:

Brit.   /ˌkarᵻˈbiːən/, /kəˈrɪbɪən/,  U.S. /ˌkɛrəˈbiən/, /kəˈrɪbiən/

Both are acceptable.

CAH-RAH-BEE-AHN is the Spanish pronunciation.

In American English, both CUH - RIB - EEE- ANN & CARE - UH - BE - ANN are considered acceptable pronunciations.

I think you mean that this variant is modeled after the Spanish word stress.  The Spanish pronunciation is / ka ri 'be njo / (with the stress on the penultimate syllable).

Ypsi, I will gladly take a trip down there (all expenses paid by you, of course) to verify this.

Yes. My bad. The spanish word is indeed Caribe, not Caribbean :)

If I run into a situation like this, I'd just say El Mar   (translates to "The Sea) and hope your audience knows which body of water you are referring to.

Sorry, but despite what Gregory says, sometimes I prefer to do my own research! ;D

I don't think the Miilikin broadcast team had too much to joke about last weekend.

Another discrepancy in stats.  https://wheaton_ftp.sidearmsports.com/custompages/football/Highlights/2018/Millikin/Nichols%20TD.mp4
This was a play from the Milikin 45 yard line but was described as a 55 yard td. reception for Nichols in the Box score.?  It should have been a 45 yard recepiton. right?

Agreed -- the yardage discrepancy stems from misplacing the interception and return on the previous play.

I don't know if they're doing road games this season. Sometimes the radio station that broadcasts MU football games sends a crew to Chicago when Millikin is at North Park, sometimes it doesn't. You'd have to ask Brett Marhanka if the Big Blue had its own broadcasters last week at McCully. Or perhaps USee knows.
